Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Warms up really fast, good temperature control. Good for soldering from SMD components to big parts. No difference in use from an overpriced Weller.Wish RadioShack had the replacement tips in store. However tips can be found on the net. They are 6.5mm external/4mm internal. Hakko 900M tips fit this iron, as well as many other "generic" ones [...]

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

This page is covered with complaints about not being able to get tips. There are also many responders saying that you CAN get tips. They just don't tell you WHERE. I did find one way. I went to the store complaining about not finding them on the RS website. He told me he could order them for me. So what you have to do is lean over the counter as he twists the monitor around for you to look. It's a very uncomfortable arrangement. I didn't want to torture the clerk into clicking up a picture for each of the 7 or 8 tips along with their specs so I just told him to order the first two. When I got home I called the 800 number he gave me. They told me that there was no other way. There's no link where you can go and see the whole collection of tips with descriptions. A really poor way of doing business. Moral of the story-- check for parts availability before you hand over your money. I had questions they had NO answers.

Just to correct what Hankens said about replacement tips. You currently can order replacement tips for the Digital Soldering Station through the store only. The store manager told me the Digital Soldering Station is fairly new and as more stations are sold, the replacement will become more readily available in the stores and on-line.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I got this unit as a Christmas gift, and I really like the look, feel and function. Unfortunately the unit I received had a bad soldering iron (no temperature readout when I turned it on). After obtaining the receipt, I exchanged the soldering station for a new unit, but that one had some botched threads on the cap that goes over the soldering tip. I decided to try once more and finally got one that seems to work nicely.

I used the soldering station briefly today, and it seems to come up to temperature and regulate well. I just hope my experience with the first two units isn't indicative of the quality of this product.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Thanks to Radion Shack for re-branding this item at a good price. I highly recommend this item.

Just be careful when you make your purchase and be sure that the tip is in the box. That RS will not keep tips on the shelf, not even on-line at RS.com, has led some folks to open the boxes and steal the tips.

One RS manager I talked to is aware of this and keeps the soldering stations in stock storage so ASK if you don't see it on the shelf when you go to buy it. Also, many RS clerks don't know much about what they sell unless it's a common item (such as a cell phone) so ask for manager when you want to get more tips

Good iron for money. Note on tips -- RS doesn't keep them on the shelf nor do they have them on-line at the RS web site but you can get your RS manager to order them through RSU, Radio Shack's custom parts ordering service. They have about six of the most common tips available.I ordered the small chisel tip (RSU Catalog #12463923)when I purchased the soldering station.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I am a retired Electronic Design Tech, with 60 years R & D experience. I like the station, it works very well except it is extremely limited because of just one tip. This class of tool should have a variety of replacement tips readily available, or at least easily identified on line. I don't want to trip to the store to discover store personnel can't find them listed either. I would recommend to a friend if you can furnish tips.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Great for building projects w/ SMT components and DIY kits. One of the best stations I have used, comparable to a Weller. The unit maintains good heat for large projects; great heat control system. Not so great for heavy gauge or large pads, included tip to small. The system needs a larger range of tips i.e. wider and flat faced tips.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Dear Radio Shack. Almost every user of this thing is going to want a larger tip to take advantage of the power of the iron. Not including the extra tips in the store or on your website with a link is a sin. You guys need to fix that. Its really ridiculous to source an iron like this without a solid link to replacement tips. The tiny tip that comes with it is good for really smallish work, but to do any larger work (which is why I bought a powerful iron in the first place) you need a bigger tip. Come on!

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

This is a really outstanding solder station for the buck. No, it doesn't have desoldering capabilities on-board and no, it doesn't have hot air. If your soldering requires these then you'll have to upgrade to much more expensive equipment. As far as tips go, there are 18 tips available from the manufacturer (Madell). Here's a link:[@]Scroll down to the replacement tips for the solder stations. They are mostly $6.00 with a couple at $7.00 and $8.00. You will have to pay freight, so there is really no reason to order them directly from Madell. You'll save some funds by getting them at your local Radio Shack store. Radio Shack is smart for carrying this item under their name. It's made by a respected company that builds very high quality equipment.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

If RS has tips for this thing, where are they? Not on the Accessories tab!!! And searching the RS site for soldering iron tips, this station is never mentioned. I don't believe that they have tips. Or if they do, why aren't they on the Accessory tab and why doesn't someone post the link or some part numbers? SO irritating!

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

PEOPLE PLEASE
It is so frustrating to read reviews from folks who don't have a clue how to post a review.
1. The iron works great...that is what the review is about..not the store....not the clerk...the iron.
2. It is just as good as a weller
3. The tips are found on the brands website
Now to the 3 crazy people who were told at the store that the store did not have tips so they bought a new machine while laughing at the clerk...are you nuts. why buy a new machine without going to the website to find out the truth instead of a min. wage clerk.
Now to the people who bought the machine before they read the reviews and were very upset to find they needed to buy the tips on-line. read the reviews before you buy
Let's move onto those who keep rating the iron as a one because the store does not carry the tips...helloooooooo rate the store as a one the iron works good so give it a five so we know it is a good product.
If you must list it again in your post even though post after post after post says there are no tips......don't

Cons:
Lack of replacement tips
Best Uses:
Minor Projects
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Unit works fairly well but tip can be a problem. The tip that came with the unit is extra fine and did not conduct heat well to the very tip. Thus the very tip end often was to cold to melt standard 60/40 solder even on the highest heat settings. Usually this isn't a major problem except on real delicate circuit cards with tiny traces such as laptop computers. So far unable to locate any replacement tips locally which might easily resolve this problem.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

All the people that go for brand names like Weller and such are clueless. If it does the job well then brand does not matter. Go ahead and waste your money on an over priced Weller for bragging rights. Other than the whole situation with finding replacement tips is the only real issue I have with this product. I use my cheap general purpose soldering iron for most jobs but break this baby out when I want to do small detailed work. I know you will buy what you want but don't buy into the hype of the over priced soldering irons from companies like Weller, you are paying for the name.

Like most have said you must order tips from the Madell web site. So what? They have 18 tips to choose from and you can buy this digital station at your local RS for a fraction of the cost that the competition charges for a comparable station. Does it really matter that you can't get the tips from RS? They don't make the station, but they do almost give it away. Quit whining and buy a bunch of tips from Madell and a project with the money you save.

Tips *ARE* available
By CameronVerified Reviewer from Austin, TX on 11/22/2008
Pros:
Good Value
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Price is decent..yes, it is a bit of a pain to order the replacement tips from another source; but not THAT big of a deal. Still bad marketing on RadioShack's part to not offer parts for their most expensive iron. But this seems to be a problem with many of their irons; makes me wonder if they bother to read these reviews?

Digital Soldering Station
By AstroBob from Michigan on 11/15/2008
Pros:
High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Product is very good...very fine control over soldering heat. Biggest problem is that it seems RS doesn't carry the replacement tips for it. I found that the unit is actually a Madell AT 201 D and you can get spare parts and tips from them. Google the name. It should come with either a catalog number of spare tips and where to get them...or RS should have them in their catalog.
It appears to be just as good as the Weller station which cost quite a bit more.

Too cool by half, literally
By PeteVerified Reviewer from Franklin, Mass. on 11/10/2008
Cons:
Low Quality
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I received this as a Fathers Day gift this year; it gave me one session of decent soldering. Then it flipped out. Display went erratic, with readings rapidly bouncing around between 0 and 700 degrees. Then it just quit. After a five-month rest, I fired it up again and it worked, for all of 15 minutes. It resumed it's bounce, then the tip went cold, and the display rendered nothing by dashes. And yes, it was still plugged in...

Great Station, Low Price
By Crisco from Burlington, WA on 11/4/2008
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
Included tip useless
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I solder quite a bit and this is almost a replica of what I use in the Navy. Great quality and the digital display is awesome and easy to set. The 3 presets are great! The only real downfall is the included tip is a pencil-type tip so it's very small and heat dissipation is very limited. However, [...] has replacement tips for like $6.00. Just google [...] solder tips and you'll find it. HIGHLY recommended.

soldering iron replacement tips
By workman from Oklahoma on 10/26/2008

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I would not buy any iron that doesn't have replacement tips listed on the same page as the iron. That's more important than "things you might want".

Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

This is a great little iron at a fraction of the price of comparable Weller units. They have a wide variety of sizes of replacement tips at the MadellTech site.

nozzles-tips is the page with html as the extension.

Yes, Radio Shack should carry them, but it's not that big of a deal to order them.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

This soldering station looks great. Its features are great and its very inexpensive for what it can do.Unfortunately as other reviews have pointed out, tips are not available for this item. Radio Shack simply doesn't carry them. A soldering iron that you can't get tips for is completely useless. [...]Don't waste your time or money, this product looks great and it would be the best soldering station for the money anywhere...but without replacement tips its completely worthless.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would market a really nice solder station but not offer replacement range of tips. This becomes a fairly useless tool without the specialized tips needed to make this a viable product - what a shame.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I was seriously disappointed after buying this station to replace my old RS Digital station that pooped out. I typically solder fine 28 AWG wire to RCA connectors. The tip that comes with this iron couldn't sufficiently heat the area required to solder the fine wire to the RCA connector. When I went back the RS to find a more suitable tip. I was told they didn't have one. What? How in the world can you sell a soldering iron for this kind of money and NOT have more than one tip for it? I was told by the RS employee that it was a "digital" soldering station, and was therefore designed to be used with "digital components" that are smaller. I could hardly contain my laughter at this comment. Bottom line is the employee said the stationw as not returnable without the box (I had thrown away), and I now must purchase a new station.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I recent got into HAM radio and am in the process of building a receiver. I wanted a product with good heat control that was easy to use. This solder station fit the bill. It heats up fast and works great. Since I don't have a spot to keep it set up, I bought a hard side case from a building supply store and removed the foam to fit the solder station. Makes a neat package that can be kept safely stored or taken with me when needed.
