Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

I made it a point to add a review about this camera... I have worked in the film industry for nearly 20 years around the top of the line equipment. Up front I must say I am not a DP or cam operator so I do not directly work with cameras. I work in the graphics side of the industry but I have a good working knowledge of cameras on set.... That being said I have to say this camera shoots almost as good as some of the units we use in the industry. So everyone understands a proffesional camera uses a 3 ccd chip set-up so there is really no way a single chip camera can produce an image as good. Before purchasing a camera I sat and read thru all the reviews and choose this camera because of decent comments being made. I had also noticed that many of the complaints people had were because of lack of experience and not really a problem with the camera. If you spend the money on a camera, even a cheaper one , it's worth reading up on lighting set-ups and camera techniques. If you read up on these things and understand them you will very easily be able to produce good quality videos.
My only complaint about this camera and it's not really a complaint is the sound quality on this and all cameras under $3000 is the sound isn't the greatest. A single condenser type of mic will only due so good. If anyone wants to do some really spectacular work they should use a seperate stereo mic set-up anyway and edit the video and sound together.
***Good luck and Happy Filming***

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

A waste. Bad quality in any area without a bright light source. Options have to be reentered each time it is turned on. Zoom is ok, but even with the stabilization the shot is shaky with slow focus time. Do not get this with a REPAIR PLAN. the only thing that I was told after trying to get mine fixed was NO. The repair plan only covers the product if it is already broken by the manufacturer, and the battery. Along with the bad manners of employees and misleading managers I will never buy a single product for this company ever again. The camera looks nice and is easy to use but a single scratch on the outside case, on the back of the screen, cracked the inside. The camera was fully functional before I paid for it. So what was the point of paying more for a plan that does not cover the camera itself? Personally I would like to know this companies definition of repair. Maybe a better word to use is.....

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

This camera is a deal. HD camcorder with an Optical zoom, image stabilization, auto-focus while recording, "super" macro mode, fluid playback, nice screen, simple interface, 1 hour 7 minutes with 4gb card, would not recommend buying this camera unless you own a newer computer capable of the high bit rate playback requirements for the 1080p mode recordings, the digital camera is just a bonus, although it takes acceptable pictures with the built in flash at night, the day time pictures probably would be best in a really bright environment. The battery life sucks, although i just bought 4 spare batteries from a certain location for a really good deal. If you want a HD camcorder and don't plan on filming at night or in a dimly lit basement, the value of this camera easily matches the MSRP price.

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

If you want to do some video editing with this little monster, get ready for some misery. There's no software under Windows that will do the job, and the included Vivitar software doesn't have the capability. The files have some proprietary audio codec and nothing seems to be able to deal with it. If you're doing one offs that's okay, but you're not going to do any assembly editing.

The only software I have found that can open and render the files(for use on You Tube, for example)is KDEnlive under Linux

The video is good under bad conditions-low light: you get some pixellation, but over all it's passable. The Autofocus is dodgy, and sometimes doesn't like to reset, which leaves this out as a camera to use when you need quick response(such as shooting Punk shows). The pictures are very good; and despite problems with the autofocus, you could use this a as a second still camera. It would have been nice to have a forced flash setting.

I haven't had any of the issues with batery life, and the standard USB commector makes it easy enough to attach external power.

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

This camera has better quality than 90% of the videos on youtube. The trick is to shoot in wvga normal resolution. Take a look at my red truck on [@]. Don't shoot in 1080p or 720p. Again shoot in wvga normal resolution and your video will look like you have a $3000.00 camera. Still images are the same great quality. If you set the resolution too high there will be stabilization issues. Just set it to normal. Leave comments on my youtube page and let me know if I am giving you good advice. For under $200.00 you can't beat it.

i wanted to check this out because it was so cheap.. its actually pretty amazing in high light situations if your just panning on a tripod. and i dont know what the guy was talking about the format not being compatible with editing programs. Final Cut Pro is the main editing program in hollywood and it opens just fine in it. tho i have notices it doubles up on frames which is a bit annoying to have to fix but once again if your a professional you know you have to pay alot more then 200 for a quality camera. all in all its a nice family camera for your everyday outings.

I found the image quality for video to be very below par and not even close to HD quality. The audio recording picks up the zoom button noise while recording and the overall mic pick-up is sub-par as well. Returned to the store and am researching to find a better unit in the $300-400 range.

I bought this camera to use for snowboarding videos and other videos with my friends, and at first it looked great. But after i shot a movie i saw that the video quality is pretty bad. The auto focus is very slow, the cameras still photos blur easily, and the video is pixely even in HD. This one is going back to the store for sure.

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

Wow. I was not expecting much from this camera, just a small hard drive cam I could use for quickie interviews for the web, but I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.

First of all, if you have a Mac forget this camera. It is incompatible in every way. Even with Compressor, a very expensive program, or VisualHub, a normally very reliable program, I could not turn the video into anything I could edit. So I plugged the camera directly into my HDTV to see what it would record in a perfect world...and it was BAD. Choppy, pixelated, had red and blue lines through all shadows in low light, and forget moving this camcorder. If you move it, all you get is digital noise until you keep it perfectly still again.

Even standing still, this camcorder is NOT HD. Again, NOT HD. I would say a good quality standard definition camera will give you better quality any day of the week.

Please don't buy this. Even if you're broke. It will just make you more broke with a piece of plastic you would never get any joy out of using.

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

I had been looking at some other HD camcorders - I was seriously considering a Canon model for about $600 and figured I didn't have much to lose on this one, since it was only about 30 percent of what I'd spend on the other one. It takes GREAT videos and good still photos (the $600 one only had a 3 megapixel camera; this one has an 8 megapixel, which was astounding for a video camera. I had used video tape cameras - got good picture quality and color but experienced degraded quality video when I captured it on PC. Have used DVD cameras - their colors seem muted and working with the videos is ponderous. This camera will handle a 16 gigabyte class 6 card with no problem and video transfer is very fast, very colorful, and incredibly clear - it is quite frankly Blue Ray quality video. The 1050 maH battery can't even last an hour taking high def video, though, and you can't use the camera at all when it's plugged into the power cord - that's a bummer, since I sometimes have to record hours of video and had hoped this unit would be suitable for that - and the battery takes a LONG time to charge. I do feel like I got my money's worth, but I wouldn't buy the camera for more than the [$] I paid for it on sale.

I do green screen productions, as well as film around my town for various companies and organizations. I was excited to see an HD camera on sale for this price so i jumped for it. This camera is deplorable, the video quality is terrible in low lighting situations, or just around my house or in my well lit studio. The image stability does not work very well. I plan on taking this camera back to see if it is defective or it is the model. Something tells me that it's not defective..

The camera doesn't support SDHC memory cards like it says on the box and website, which means you can't put more than 8 GB of memory onto it; so you'd have to buy the regular and more expensive SD cards with faster data transfer rates. SUCKS! Also, this camera records great quality, but once there's the slightest movement on the camera's point of perspective (aka a shaky hand), then the quality of the video drops, even with Stabilization turned on. ALSO, the stabilization option isn't available for the WVGA 60 fps or the 1080p 30 fps resolution settings, what!? I'm going to return this thing right away, I hate it. i'm going with a Sony probably

Comments about VIVITAR Vivitar® DVR 840XHD HD Flash Camcorder (Red):

Its a fabulous camera. The HD quality is killer. I loved that is uses standard cords instead of a cable you can only get through the manufacture. The only slight down fall this camera has is it its stabilizer.
