I use this to back up to a SATA Drive that I transport between locations. Also bought one from Cables Unlimited which has a hinged interface and doesn't always make proper contact, so this is a far better unit.

Great price compared to others. Feels solid & not like its going to break.

Would be better if power switch were on front or top instead of back, but that's minor.

Would definitely recommend it, although probably should have gone with an external enclosure.

It's nice to be able to just buy another hard drive since the prices for the 500G+ ones are fairly affordable. I bought this when my seagate hard stopped working after leaving it on overnight. I pulled out the seagate drive from its enclosure and put it into this docking station and it worked as if nothing went wrong. This is definitely a great buy. I recomend using the WD Caviar Green series to solve the hard drive getting hot. Just remeber to turn it off when you shut down your computer.

At the moment most external hdd docking stations suffer from one flaw: no cooling. Despite that, it is the most cost efficient portal to having physical backups. The product works as expected, squishing all that info through sluggy usb as expected. I'm pleased. Also got the rebate, so I'm glad, thank's RadioShack and Worldwide Rebates!

Hard drive would spin with drive connected to product, and base would disconnect from computer. This happened on both pc and apple computers. Tried to obtain return authorization from THE SHACK, three times over the phone, but never recieved FEDEX label, local store where merchandise was picked up, was generous to provide return label. Hopefully your company will provide timely refund.

The cradle is an excellent tool for backing up drives, files especially in the context of rebuilding. I Ghosted a hard drive from a system I needed to rebuild. The cradle allows me to quickly access e-mail, files, folders, settings as I accomplish the rebuild. It's a huge benefit to use the cradle rather than either connecting the hard drive directly to the new computer internally or wrapping it in an enclosure, which works but takes more time, especially if you have to keep swapping drives. My one and only complaint is the slow shipping. Advice: have it shipped to your home, as it does not seem to matter speed wise so you get it faster by not having to make a trip to the store.

This docking station may not look as cool as an aluminum enclosure, but it sure is versatile and inexpensive. I use it mostly for creating backups from my home and work computers (2 laptops, 1 desktop). I only use the USB interface and I can easily move it from one computer to another. When I am done, I turn it off for storage. I think it is a bit too bulk for traveling. For that one would probably get something like a Western Digital My Passport.

This unit is great for working with desktop and laptop SATA drives. I use it to test them, reformat them, and move images and backups to them. Very necessary for anyone who does a lot of work with newer PC's.

I used this enclosure only once over the past couple of months and it works as expected with WinXPSP2. It was a really good buy [$] after rebates.The good thing about this is enclosure is that it could be used with multiple HDDs (both small and large form factor) without removing the hassle of installation everytime.One thing that I don't like about this is that it's not sleek. I recently used mine to diagnose a problem with a friend's laptop. I took out his hard drive, popped into the dock and and connected it my computer where it mounted right up. Discovered the problem, then backed up his essential files. Works as advertised. if you want real speed (and you have the interface), I'd go with the version of this that has the ESATA connecter. For most of us though, the USB version is just fine.

Radioshack took a month to get this to me, which is ridiculous and caused me to lose my [$] rebate. The rebate had to be postmarked by a certain amount of days after purchase, not receiving the package.I really think they do this on purpose in order to fudge up your rebate. I had to mod a fan to this. All my 500GB hard drives ran extremely hot.

If you have large HDD's or HDD's you know run hot, this might not work for you, unless you mod or aim a fan on it.

This is an excellent product for those that need extra storage. Take the internal hard drive (which cost less than external hard drive) and place it into this docking system and you will have lots of extra storage space. Very affordable and reliable. I personally recommend this to all in search of extra storage space.

This is a great item for accessing data from computer's that have failed. My main gripe is that after receiving it and sending the rebate info off, I got an email a few months later asking me to send in the rebate info. Also when I tried to enter the rabate, they wanted to charge me for an instant transaction vs. a sent out check or VISA gift card.

DO NOT buy any products from Radio Shack because of a rebate (WorldWideRebates) as this is about as close to a scam as a retailer can get, since they can sluff off responsibility to another company.

Great product, though. I'll gladly retract the negatives if an (unlikely) resolution comes from the rebate.

I really like this device. The only knock is the USB2 interface. While providing good performance, USB2 data transfers tend to slow the PC down a bit vs. a FireWire connection, which would be my preference (they don't make one of these with an FW400/800 interface).

The one thing that I needed this to do, but does not, is recognize an unformatted drive. It is a real pain in the rump opening up my PC, connecting the drive to the motherboard (via SATA connection), formatting so that the drive recognizes in the Thermaltake, and then closing the PC back up. Otherwise, I am happy with it.

I have used quite a few hard drive enclosures for my internal hard drive before the purchase of this HD docking station. Most of them didn't last very long and the bad part about those enclosure is that you have to buy multiple enclosures if you have more than one HD. These docking station is a good solution for that. All you need to do is to keep your HDs from dust and put them on the top of the station when you want to use them. It may not give you a full protection of your hard drives but provides you a really easy way to access your HD. Thanks for this smart design.....

I tried both 3.5'' WD 500GB and Seagate 1.5TB hard drives and it worked very well without updating any firmware. The spec says it supports up to 1TB. It is not true.

Works great, out of the box. Just plug in the drive and Windows recognizes as "removeable disk" immediately without driver installation or anything like that.

Important to note, doesn't have IDE connections, so isn't quite as flexible as docking stations that have both SATA and IDE connections . . . but that's probably only important if you need to access an older drive

I have two of these docks, and I store lots of data; primarily media files. As I gradually upgrade my storage drives from IDE to sata, I can just drop drives into these bases and be transferring data in a very short time. The area around my desk is neater, and a stack of bare drives takes up lots less space than multiple external drive enclosures.

I like the idea that the power and data connections are solid and way down there, out of the way. The weight of the drive keeps the connections tight, and I don't worry that they are going to get loose or become gradually deformed over time, a problem I have had with external enclosures when I would frequently plug and unplug drives from the connections.

This is heavy and large which keeps it from falling over. It connects to the drive easily and firmly. I have not measured transfer speeds, but it didn't hickup on multi-gigabyte files (uncompressed 720x480x60fps video files). The activity light is cool.

This allows me to use a SATA drive like a giant USB thumb drive, basically. I keep all of my media on here so that I can easily move it between different locations. It is also useful when I am working on large video projects and need to work on multiple computers. And instead of having to buy an external hard drive to do this, I can do it with a drive I already had and wasn't using to its full capacity.

i probably should have known better than to make a purchase from radio shack, but this item was cheap after mail-in rebate so i figured it would be worth it. wrong. the item took at least 2 weeks to arrive. after submitting my fully compliant rebate paperwork, i received a rejection from the rebate processing company because i submitted my email confirmation instead of a "receipt or packing list". guess what? that was all i ever got. the box had nothing in it but the item. a threat to take things to small claims court got the rebate processed, but this will be the last time i do business with radio shack.

Well built, solid construction, heavy(!) and steady on the desktop. Very simple setup: one power cord, one USB 2 cable — plug in a drive and go. USB2 is not known for fast throughput, but this works fine as a start-the-backup-and-walk-away. MUCH easier to swap disks with this than going through the hassle associated with installing a SATA drive in an enclosure. Power switch makes a reassuring click when pressed. It is what it is and does what it needs to. Good stuff.
