Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

Unit proved invaluable during my recent vacation in the US. Looked like new out of the box and the price was unbeatable. The alternative, updating my European model with US maps, would have been even more expensive and time-consuming as well.

I had it delivered and picked it up at a shop 2 miles from the airport without any problems. No hassle, no constant referring to maps in unknown areas, no problems in pitch-dark night in rural areas. Unit was reliable and did its job. Picked it up, plugged it in and drove off. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Bought new for over $450. At 3 months old unit would shut self down and not hold charge. Notified TotTom and their solution was to advise to reset, but not have it sent in for warranty repair. Unit never held a charge without vehicle power cable. If you have a problem insist to send it in, or they'll stall until warranty runs out and then say there is nothing they can do even if you reported it under warranty. They also offer no replacement battery. Check out the online blogs and you'll see alot of the same. Get a Garmin.

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

This TomTom 720 is a GREAT VALUE! Even a better value @ [$] for the refurb model. Fast, Accurate, and tagging "favorites" into memory by using Google Maps is a REAL plus. Bluetooth for hand's free calling. FM Transmitter for directions and MP3 music. Just awesome. It's a thin/light GPS with a BIG screen. The windshield mount is an improvement over the 300 and 510 series I had before. Loved it so much, I ended up getting a 2nd one for my dad! Also, Tomtom is one of the few GPSs that offer Chinese (cantonese) as a voice. Top Notch!

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

TomTom is a piece of junk, and their customer service is even worse. Do your homework - a *very* high percentage of these have defective batteries, and they will not repair your unit, only replace it with a "refurbished" unit with exactly the same problem. You WILL then lose ALL your Favorites, because the restore function will not recognize the backup for your other unit, and the Favorites are tied to the map, which is tied to your old unit, so even if you find the right file it still won't work. Also, TomTom lacks important features, like a dashboard screen and track logging. Do yourself a favor and get a Garmin instead.

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

When using my refurbished tom tom go720, I realized that this product is the best there is for the price that I bought it for. I believe that if the futures are not supported on the device then why display them. That's not a good marketing tip. What do like about this is that the calls are totally clear when making or receiving calls using the integrated blue tooth feature. Overall, I would give a 4 out of 5 stars because I noticed that there are some small glitches in my gps but nothing that inhibits its performance from getting you from point a to point z. It does have short battery life when off the charger but then again you are constantly using your screen on the gps so therefore you can only turn down the brightness of it to reduce the amount of power being used. But for a gps I would say it is about average.

I am great with directions, but I tried to download music to the MP3 player at least 8 times. Your instructions to the MP3 format don't give enough information. After spending at least 5 hours setting up my playlist, you can imagine my frustration when I could not transfer the music to the TomTom's SanDisk. I've a friend who is buying a TomTom w/o the MP3 format....she loved mine.

It has been a useful item for me. At times with all the construction going on around where I live, it is handy to have to route around it. At this time the only thing I dislike is that the map itself does not include the greater portion of subdivision I live in that has been built in last 4 years. Fortunately my address which is from 97 is included. I like the mapshare, but dislike that it does not automatically add missing streets added by mapshare if it is not on the map. Yes I mapped the missing sections, but it is not in the latest update.

Ordered one unit, had all the same problems as bad reviews show: voice quit, didn't warn of upcoming turns, when you do miss a turn it REALLY gets you lost when it re-calculates. I worked directly with TomTom support to fix the features for about 3 weeks. Gave up and returned the unit. Going to try one more unit to see if I get one that works. Then try something different. this is the only unit at the price which will accept voice commands, very helpful feature.

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

I ordered the 720 as a refurbished product after some research. It arrived in great shape cosmetically, I charged it overnight, and rudimentary setup was easy. But it was a matter of minutes before the battery indicator showed a half charge. Within about 35 minutes, it was flashing a low battery warning. I tried another overnight charge from a different charger, and got more of the same the next day. TomTom support assured me that even a refurbished unit should be getting 2 to 5 hours of service per charge.Assuming, though, that this is a fluke, how does the 720 compare? Not very well for me, it turns out. Bluetooth adds significantly to the price, and it was a feature I was eager to try. But my phone, the Palm Centro, wasn't even listed as an option. Furthermore, according to TomTom support, Sprint is not a supported carrier on any of their GPS models. I was able to fake it out, telling the 720 that I was using a Treo with Cingular, and I was able to get handsfree calling to work, but Plus Services which are value-adds to many, (traffic data, etc) are inaccessible. Also, I could not get the Centro's address book to transfer to the 720.On the most fundamental level of all, urban navigation, I did enjoy the effortless menu interface; the touch screen responds well. But trying to find a common POI was difficult- a search for the Science Center (a major attraction) on competing units generally turns up at least two results- one for its old location from 1970-2003, and one for its new locale from 2004-present. The TomTom didn't have either one in its POI database, even after an update. Furthermore, I tried navigating by address to work, and found I had to ignore its route in favor of my familiar one, which is the most direct route, using major streets. The TomTom plotted a rather roundabout route by comparison- longer, with more turns onto unfamiliar side streets. All the while, the big, beautiful screen which consumes so much power, was winking out as the voice spoke, because the battery was fast dying.Despite this fiasco, I found TomTom support to be pretty responsive, and the product held the promise of something that could be usable, if not for the battery or apparent lack of POIs for the Des Moines, Iowa area, not to mention no Sprint or Centro support- a popular phone! Huge disappointment to have to send it back.[...]

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

This TommTom Go 720 was refurbished and looked new when we got it, except I had to return to TomTom because there was a loose connection in the audio out plug so be careful, this is a fragile plug. Also the advertisement said, the software disc came with it and it did not so they refered me to TomTom for the solution. I found out refurbished units do not contain the disc, false advertising in my book. Good thing I could download the program from the TomTom web site.

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

Went thru set-up. Figured out most of the features. Took it on a trip. Got lost on almost every turn. Very often it would miss telling you about an upcoming turn. Then it would tell you you had to take an exit when all you needed to do was go straight. When you missed a turn the recalculate would send you on a wild goose chase. Took a 30 min drive on a 10 minute trip a couple of times.

Excellent unit. The cord that came with the reciever for the car would not make a good connection. I purchased a second mounting kit from TomTom and all is well now. I purchased this product because I had used one with my former employer. It is very good at finding routes on the fly and I like the mapshare functionality.

I traveled to Williamston, NC from Madisonville, Tn
where it worked well, it really did but Hwy 40 E in Winston Salem was a horror. It sent me around in circles, going west instead of east. When I got back where I was to go, it showed me traveling accross the grass. This was a real turn off. Now when I got to the next big city it was terrific. Help by updating your maps in Winston Salem.

Actually, conducted research in finding a unit that was basically for my dad, who is not a computer guru. Had to be very user friendly with a very little learning curve and flat out easy right from the box. The TomTom Go 720 fit the bill. Also should mention that the Garvin 760 had high marks as well. Sources included most web sites evaluating GPS units... The refurb. unit was has good as new and maintained a 6 mo. warranty or exchange... Very happy with the unit!

Second chance for GPS pays off
By mike the gps guy from Houston on 2/18/2009

Pros:
Easy menus
Cons:
Fm transmitter, Real time traffic
Best Uses:
Regular gps functions

The was a refurbished unit loaded with options. Basic features work just fine like the computer voice reading aloud street names. The navigation is usually accurate, as accurate as any other brands would be. The unit can support real time traffic with the purchase of an antannae or it can use the internet connection of a few cell phone models. tis is a sticking point with me because I intended to use the cell phone bluetooth connection but mine is not on the seemingly limited list. Using the GPS to dial your cell phone is pointless because the person on the other end of the call can not hear a word I say since the gps mic pics up all of the car noise. It is possible to broadcast on an fm frequency and tune the gps in to your car radio. This works fine, but after upgrading the gps software the navigation voice no longer comes through on the radio- it only goes through the gps speaker! The gps does voice recognition decent. It is possible to say the name of your destination and it will translate your voice instead of having to type the info. in. The unit has an sd slot so you can boost the memory and load it up with music or pictures. A good unit for a good price.

Cons:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

Overall this is a very good GPS system. I also own a comparable Garmin unit and found that both systems have their pros and cons. The mapping system is great. I live in the North East and travel quite a bit. To date I have not had a problem with the unit giving me bad directions. The options available to customize your unit are endless and being able to access the updates from other TomTom users for free is a huge bonus. I have read a few reviews about the 720 Bluetooth features not being able to work with some cell phones. To date I have been able to sync my Palm 755p, LG dare and Blackberry Curve without any issues. The Bluetooth is a great feature. The only negative thing I can say about the 720 is the lack of categories under the Points of Interest. When looking up specific categories it should allow you to drill down into sub-categories. For example when you click on restaurants it should then bring up sub-categories like Chinese, Pizza etc… This is the only area where I prefer my Garmin 750 to my TomTom 720.

Great Unit - Poor Battery Life
By HitechEvalVerified Reviewer from New England on 12/25/2008
Pros:
Great performance
Cons:
Bad Value, Expensive, Low Quality
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

The TomTom GO720 is all you could ever want in an upper end GPS. TFT Display with 4.3” Touch Screen, optional realtime Traffic & Weather, spoken directions with Real Street Names, both US & Canada Maps, 400MHz processor for faster satellite acquisition and location display, 2Gb Flash Memory for handling a virtual unlimited number of pre-canned and personal POI’s. A really great unit. It should be… it cost a fortune. But one of the reasons I bought this unit was because it had an internal battery that allowed the GO720 to be removed from the car and used to provide navigation while traveling around in major cities… by foot. The battery inside the unit when I first purchased it a year ago supplied multiple hours of external car use. It was great! Now it’s a little over a year later, it’s Dec 2008. Even with a full charge (ie: more than 4 hours on either the USB cradle charger or the 12vdc car adaptor charger) the battery now lasts for LESS THAN 4 MINUTES outside the car before the unit ‘dies’.Here’s what TomTom doesn’t tell you.[...]So now I’m stuck with a GPS unit that won’t work outside the car which is one of the reasons ‘why’ I bought the TomTom GO720. I’ll never buy another TomTom and I’m going to sell this one on eBay as defective. Before you consider the TomTom brand, please learn from my experience.

So far, I have to say, this is a stupid bargain for this extremely easy to use feature-full unti: FM tramsmitter to radio, Bluetooth phone & earpiece connection, quick gps signal, fast routing, phenomenal PC software to control & upgrade the unit, and the MapShare option is phenomenal! Comments about TomTom TomTom® GO 720 GPS Receiver (Refurbished):

I bought this Gps refurbished for [$]and have been very happy with it so far. It has so many options that I didn't realize when I bought it. For example it connects to my cell phone and I am able receive my text messages through it while I am driving. I also have uploaded my phone book to it so making calls is a snap. As a Gps it very quickly generates routes and when I miss a turn it quickly generates a new route. So far it has had no problems discovering where my car is located as a previous gps I have owned did. For the price I paid I am extremely happy with this product. I don't know if I would have paid full price only because I know the streets in my area very well and do not travel out of town very often, so it is not imperative for me to own a gps.
