I bought one for my aging father and he loves it. He doesn't go into town much, and having the hospitals programmed in gives me some assurance that he might actually be able to find one in an emergency. Also, he loves playing with it while driving.....cool gift for the senior set !

THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED ME THAT THEY DO NOT SUPPLY THE CURRENT MAP UPDATE WITH THEIR REFURB UNITS. THIS WAS NOT MENTIONED AT R/S WEB SITE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT IN ORDER TO BRING THE UNIT UP TO DATE WITH THE CURRENT MAPS ENTAILS AN ADDITIONAL COST WHICH NEGATES THE SAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use my tomtom to take me to new locations. Sometimes, I just use it to show off to others how neat it is to have when construction block my known route. It re-routes and get me to my destination. I love my TOMTOM...

The text to speech is very useful to confirm directions. Acquires satellites much more quickly than the Garmin Nuvi 255w which I also own.

This is the second GPS Unit I owned and as I expected it is the best! The first one I owned was one of the originals, Pharos Ostia installed on an HP Ipaq. This was at last 6 years old! It worked o.k., I just got rid of it because I bought a cell phone with GPS on it. Well the cell phones GPS was terrible! I literally almost threw it out of the window in Scranton PA last week! It constantly lost the signals and would get thrown off route, which leads me to the incredibly slow "re-routing" I was less than a mile from my destination and it took me 20 minutes to get there with no traffic! So after a few days of comparison shopping and research I ended up with the TomTom ONE XL TTS GPS, mainly because of the text to speech and the price! I was torn because the Nuvi's get better ratings from tech gurus but the TomToms are getting a cult following! The maps are available for free if you look around...I haven't tried the TomTom site for the free maps as mine seems fine, but I was told the free part does not apply to refurbished units!As for the Refurb part of it... In my experience refurbs are almost always better. Factory Refurbished units such as this were bought and returned for whatever reason and then a human sits there and figures out what is wrong and fixes it and then tests it out and signs off on it to say it is better than new! When you get a new unit (not Refurbished) They pull 1 or 2 units out of hundreds and and test them, the rest are just boxed and shipped untested! So you know you are getting a good tested unit when you get a "factory refurbished" unitSo far I love this unit, I tested it with rural roads etc. and it finds them flawlessly! I turn down the wrong streets and it recalculates the route instantly! The text to speech part is a feature you can't live without once you experience it! I used to hear my old GPS say "Right turn ahead" and have to look at the screen to see what street it was referring to only to realize I just passed it! Now it tells me the street name and I can keep my eyes on the road! The fact that it tells me when and where to turn and how far from the turn I am makes getting lost impossible! There are also a million different voices to use along with it! You can get celebrity voices or just pleasant voices instead of those computer voices! I tried this and while driving 80 miles I could close my eyes and hear Mr. T telling me that my turn was coming up! You feel like you have someone next to you giving you directions! (Sadly he didn't tell me to open my eyes" Just kidding! But you know what I mean! Just do a google search on TomTom Voices and you will get an idea of what is available. Also note that there are a lot of great free voices available for download, just search for "Free TomTom Voices" Now, I will say this, If you have your heart set on this one, Check out the prices! After it was to late for me, I found ***www.can't say the name of site here.com had the same unit for 30.00 less! with that 30.00 you can add the 2 year replacement warranty that starts when the factory warranty ends for just 27.00! [...] However if you purchase the warranty, it says if you have a problem the company will pick up the unit or pay for all the shipping to and from them, and if the item can't be repaired, it will be replaced with the same unit or better if your unit is not available! It supposedly covers anything that happens to it, but I would check into that! most warranties cover defects and parts and labor, not throwing it out the window etc. All in all, I highly recommend this unit for the price, it functions better than it should and has more features than units that cost 4 times more! I just wouldn't buy it here! Save some cash and get it somewhere else, with the 30.00 you save, you can take someone out to dinner and use your new TomTom to find the restaurant!***Not allowed to tell you the name of the other retailer in the review but I am a fan of the other retailer, (Check out my nickname) and figure it out from there or see if Radio Shack will price match them!

when i went to update the map to bring it current, i was refused entry by tom tom . they stated that refurbised units are not supported for the free map update. nowhere in the radio shack ad does it mention this fact. in fact the specs allude to map updates with no disclaimer that this does not apply to refurbished units

I never had a GPS before. This has been very easy to set up and use. I use it all the time and it has been very accurate. It is very helpful when travelling alone as it saves you from having to check a map and take your eyes off the road. It gives you advance warnings of turns that are coming. I love it!
