Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

It seems to work fine on my converter box. It does have the occasional signal hiccup but that's usually when the weather is bad, and I was able to pick up all of the channels in my area. I just have to turn the signal up all the way and set the antennas just right. Only problems that I noticed was that if I stick up both of the antennas it blocks my internet wireless signal completely so I have to adjust only one. I also tried it on my brother's HDTV and I couldn't get a signal at all.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I connected this antenna to the digital converter box. It only seems to work OK on certain channels. I live near downtown, and the broadcast towers are close enough that an antenna should work well. signal strength on a scale of 1-100 never gets above 45. every slight dip in signal strength causes "stuttering" image and audio. signal strength dips every time a car drives by. turning on the amplifier overmodulates the signal, so it cancels out the reception. sometimes I use a guitar string plugged into the converter box for better results than this antenna.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Compare this antenna to the other amplified antennas in the store. It's not the smallest, but at least it doesn't look like the Starship Enterprise. This antenna is pretty nice. If you know how to use the gain on your antenna, then you should know that you basically need a nice balance. Not too much gain, not too little. Any other trouble you have with this is trouble you'd have with any set of rabbit ears.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Funny how I don't have the option to give ZERO stars. We had two regular rabbit ear antennas' that we purchased from a flea market for $10/each a decade ago (before we could afford cable). When my wife went to purchase a digital converter, the saleman talked her into buying this amplified antenna, because it's "better" than a non-powered. We got duped. It's actually worse. [...] Now it sits in a closet. I don't do much shopping at Radio Shack anymore. Oh, and the "gain" control? That's a joke. If you move it - or + AT ALL, the signal dissappears. What's the point then? [...]Good luck.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

This amplified antenna has received some pretty bad reviews. First of all, there are many reasons for poor or no reception. I purchased this from my local RS store knowing that it is returnable if I was not happy with it. Before purchase, I came to this website and read reviews of all of the amplified indoor antennas. I brought it home and just for "test" purposes, I hooked it up directly to an analog TV without re-scanning the channels. Guess what! Very poor to no reception. I then re-scanned the channels. Better! I then hooked up a digital converter and rescanned again. Excellent! Outstanding picture (hi-def and standard def when I hooked it up to my new Sony Bravia). Picked up 26 channels digital and analog. Has very minor "occasional" blips in digital reception which I have found almost normal. I do not wish to question other reviewers set-up but I wonder if they actually rescanned the channels before they gave up on this antenna. Note that all stations are within 15 miles of my home and that the land is flat which I'm sure makes a difference in my results.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I needed an antenna for a newly purchased digital TV since every TV I had was analog. This is a good antenna for urban / suburban use. My home is located in a strong signal area. I had to turn the boost up midway and move the antenna around to receive most of the local digital channels, else the antenna would not pull in several local stations; but once I did, they all came in strong. I also picked up a weak analog translator with the boost all the way up which suprised me. The one strong analog channel in my area does not come in clearly no matter where I position the antenna, but this channel is available in digital & comes in crystal clear.

Works worse than a short loop of wire
By noname from Bellevue, WA on 2/9/2009
Cons:
Loud hum from transformer, Poor amplification, Poor Reception
Describe Yourself:
Casual User

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Location is in Bellevue WA, some hills in the area but fairly close to transmitters. Was looking to replace an old FM antenna for our new TV. For all channels, VHF/UHF, analog or digital, the wire gave much better reception than this antenna. The amplifier seemed to improve reception for some channels (you have to fiddle with the boost so you don't over-amplify the noise too), but never got as good as the FM wire.

Another problem was the AC adapter started making a loud buzzing noise after a few minutes of being plugged in. Could have just been a defective part on my antenna, but if the antenna is louder than the TV, it's not something I am going to keep.

In summary, this is going back to Radio Shack immediately. It's a waste of money... spend a fraction of this on some copper wire and string that up... you'll end up with better reception. Don't buy it.

Works okay, but is not cable

Durable, Easy To Set Up
Best Uses:
Bedroom, Living Room, Office
Describe Yourself:
Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

This is not going to take the place of cable. And the location & direction are really important.

I had it on one side of my room, and it was not getting much better reception than my bunny ears. But when I set it up by the window, and I followed the directions (lower the antennas to halfway for channels 7-13?! not something I would have thought of!) I found it worked much better than the bunny ears.

I actually got a few stations crystal clear, and some that I had had a lot of trouble with were at least watchable.

I was set to return this, but was really glad I tried the other side of the room, as it made all the difference.

Still it needs adjusting when I switch channels, and that may just not be worth the money I save on cable. There's a price to pay for being so cheap!

I use mine in living room. I am a casual user so I did not like paying for cable as I usually watch the 4 major channels and pbs. With cable I was throwing money away because I still watched abc, nbc, fox, cbs and pbs. I canceled cable purchased this antenna and converter box and all pictures are very clear.

Every once in awhile I might have to adjust for a channel but no big deal. I bought one for me and then got one for my son about 2 miles from me to use with his hdtv so he could cancel cable and he loves it too. Picture is fantastic for him too.

I live within 10 miles of the city (nyc) and I pick up about 15 channels. All the cons of rabbit ears of course (fuzzy pic/snowy on cbs/nbc - need to adjust occasionally) but I expected that. Easy to set up. Great If your TV has a HD digital TV tuner built in (I pick up 3 crystal clear HD digital stations FREE!). Set up was 1.Connect 2.TV automaticly scanned for all the available channels and 3. Watch TV. I would recommend this antenna if you live near a major city and are looking for a free/cheap alternative to cable/sat TV.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Like most people, I bought this unit along with a converter box to use with my old analog TV. (I haven't tried it with the digital TV yet)
I found the antenna very simple to set up and use.

I live in traffic-infested, noisy, crowded Anaheim, CA. surrounded by high-density appartment buildings (I know - I oughta move instead of buying a new antenna, but that's another story) and this antenna brought in local stations that I didn't know existed!

Picture quality and sound are (comparitively speaking) EXCELLENT. Some of the local network stations (which I never watch but I did in order to check this antenna) had almost as good a picture as what my Direct TV satelite dish gets on the digital TV!

I would have rated this antenna 5 stars, but for one thing. When a particularly large or fast vehicle passes by (I live quite close to the street) the picture tends to "pixelate" and "stand still" for a couple of seconds.

No-one can tell me if this is a problem with the antenna, the converter box, or the digital signal itself! A friend uses a much more expensive antenna with her converter box and is in a similar location to mine, and she experiences the same kind of interference, so we are thinking that it isn't fault of the antenna, but that it's an inherrent problem with digital broadcasts.

I would recommend this antenna to anyone - with the afore mentioned proviso of course.

I live in Fresno, California. I had to place the antenna about 6 feet from my dtv, which required purchasing a coupler and extension cable. It picks up NBC, ABC, PBS, CW, sometimes Fox, and an oldies movie station. I have to get up and adjust the weaker stations from time to time (PBS and Fox), but the others are rock solid and look great. I'd recommend this with the caveat that it's not a substitute for cable or dish. Maybe things will get better after analog shuts off?

I have a hi-def Sony Bravia TV, and a hi-def cable package. Since Fox ended their contract with Time warner, I had to come up with alternate plan to get the fox channel. I hooked it up, and was not immediately impressed (picture was fuzzy), but once I ran the search for the digital channels, my TV is bringing 9 local high def channels from at least 45 miles away! You can't tell the cable hi-def from the antenna hi-def. Seriously! They are identical in quality. I am totally, TOTALLY satisfied, and would recommend this antenna to anyone! I do have an amplifier hooked up, and don't know what it would be without that, but it's so perfect now, I'm afraid to disconnect it.

I've never had much luck with receiving analog signals where I live in Metro Atlanta. I'm in the middle unit of a three story apt in a valley surrounded by tall trees; my outside wall and windows face away from the tv towers. I asked the Radio Shack rep for a recommendation to use with my new Tivax converter box and he said to use an amplified antenna since Atlanta has a ton of interference. I hooked this up without power, sitting on the floor, dipoles retracted and picked up two channels. Then I plugged it in and set the gain to max, resulting in 11 channels. Finally I moved it on top of my tv, fully extended the dipoles, and performed another channel scan; 18 channels were found with a clear and smooth picture. I'm keeping this one, and can finally get rid of cable.

At the highest point in the county where a number of transmitters are located, I can only tune the NBC and ABC channels in HD. The standard signal is unwatchable. I will be looking for another alternative.

I received equivalent performance to this antenna from my non-amplified rabbit-ears antenna on the same digital set top box. Furthermore, in trying to adjust it to pull in a long-range signal (70 miles), the antenna fell and both telescoping rods immediately bent and crimped, one so severely that it snapped the next time I touched it. This was the first day I used it. This unit is flimsy and I'm going to ask about restitution because it broke far too easily compared to my good old rabbit ears.

I have bought and returned several models, and this one is the first that easily receives all the hd signals in my area (Little Rock). Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I am in a Chicago suburb about 15 to 20 miles from most of the Chicago area TV stations. This antenna with the amplifier on gets about 30 digital stations with good signal strength, with my Radio Shack digital TV converter. I am in a second floor brick apartment building.

The antenna does not require much fussing or moving around. I get the best results on VHF when the rabbit ears are fully extended and close to horizontal, and UHF results are also good. I usually keep the amplifier set for maximum gain, but some stations do come in well with the amp off or on lower settings.

My only complaint is that the bottom of the rabbit ear rods, where they pivot, look like they should have been of a sturdier construction. It looks like it might not be very hard for them to be broken, so I will handle them gently.

The antenna has a maximum gain of about 22db, according to my manual, and is sufficient for my purposes, but I have seen other antennas like this for a similar price with 40 db of gain or more. But gain claims can sometimes be misleading.

You can never be sure how such an antenna will work at a given location until you try it, so make sure you have a good return or refund policy when you purchase one.

Several reviewers in situations almost identical to mine have reported terrible results with this product, and I have also seen several people similar to me who gave it good reviews.

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I concur with the many others who give this antenna a bad review...though I'll backup my opinion with some quantitative numbers. I tested this antenna two ways.

First I compared it with and w/o amplification. I've found that the amplifier doesn't work right. Even though it has a knob to tune the gain, this switch is effectively useless. There's basically only ONE narrow setting (turn the knob about 90 degrees after you turn it on) that works. Anymore or less than that, you get VERY poor reception (when the amp is on)! In fact, if I turn the gain all the way up, I receive zero channels! Without any amplification, I can receive only about half of all available channels in the area...and about half of those channels have a reception strength of less than 50%; only about a quarter of those are really watchable (w/o pauses and such). With amplification (at the right spot), I can watch about 3/4 of those stations that I do receive. As the amplification only works in that one position (that I've found), I don't see why they even bother including an adjustable knob...it should just be an on/off button for the amplification. With the amplification, I can usually get about 10~15% better reception strength compared to the unamplified signal.

In my second test, I compared it to my several year old RCA ANT-200 amplified antenna. I placed both antennas in the same position and oriented the antennas and loop the same way. For every channel that this antenna received, the signal strength on the RCA is always 15~25% better (both in amplified mode; RCA gain set to max, while the RS antenna set to that one position that works). For example, Channel 2 might have a signal strength floating around 50% on the RS antenna, but the RCA antenna will be floating around 75~80%!

As most of you who have DTV know, usually a signal strength below 35% or so is not a watchable channel; while just about all channels above 40% are okay. Even in the optimal position, this RS antenna just doesn't compare to the several-year-old RCA antenna. On the RCA antenna, I can just about watch every channel in the area, with only one channel down at 40%, while the RS antenna has that same channel at only 12% (effectively no signal).

This product does work, but it just doesn't work quite right...and not up to par, considering that it's about the same cost of the RCA ANT-200 antenna... If this was a $15 or cheaper antenna, I would consider keeping it, but as it's twice that cost, I'm returning mine to the store...

It is unfortunate to see the emotional responses to a product that is expected to be perfect in every application. I purchased this antenna to receive digital broadcast, not analog. This antenna is not perfect, but then no indoor antenna is. Almost every aspect of reception depends on location location location. I was able to receive very reasonable signals while on 3rd floor of a condo and my line of sight to the Shoreview broadcast towers is behind three large steel chimney flues. So, I recommend trying the product and if it does not work for you, take it back and try another. I was able to receive all local digital channels except channel 17. Did not try 41 in St Cloud. None of the channels are perfectly stable and signal strength varies (not the fault of the antenna).

I live just outside of Philadelphia, PA (approxiamately 15 miles) in southern NJ. This antenna was able to bring only two stations in clearly, FOX and the local PBS station but the majority were still nothing but snow. My non powered unit brings in the stations better!

When I upgreaded to a digital tuner, it did bring in some additional stations but it was iffy at best. Get a unit with a stronger amplification if you are not within the city limits.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

People need to understand ....this antenna, like any other on the market ...regardless of cost, is NOT going to work in ALL situations or locations! If you want an antenna to work WELL for YOU in YOUR location you have to select the RIGHT antenna design for your location. "IF" you are within 10 miles of the TV Station's transmitter and do NOT have a mountain or any other MAJOR obstructions between YOU and the TRANSMITTER, this antenna is a GOOD low-cost solution. I bought this antenna to solve a temporary need, until I could spend the time and expense to put up the "right antenna" for MY location in relation to my area's television transmission towers. For the short term, for me this antenna has worked adequately. I purchased this antenna in January 2006 so I could get the Super Bowl broadcast in High Def ...it worked GREAT!

I plan on installing a more substantial and higher gain rooftop antenna that is suitable for my location this spring. This little Radio Shack antenna worked fairly well for me. If you live out in TIM-BUK-TOO ...and the closest TV transmission tower is 50 miles away or you have a major obstruction between this little antenna and the tower ...guess what, this antenna is NOT going to work for you ...but that doesn't mean this antenna is a pile of junk!

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I have a 20-year old analog TV set which nonetheless still works well. However, the UHF reception at my new house in Columbia, MD was very poor with standard rabbit ears. I took a chance on this indoor antenna from Radio Shack. It gives me very definite improvement on the UHF channels, though VHF performance is about the same. I had realistic expectations ( I'm NOT one of those who must have the latest & greatest in tech). For me the improvement is sufficient to keep the product. If you're in a similar situation, have realistic expectations, and like myself hate the idea of paying high cable bills, this antenna could be a great choice. Of course, performance will vary greatly depending on your location. Usually the only way to know is to try it.

I have an analog TV. I told the radioshack guy I just wanted an antennae for basic tv stations and it looks like he pointed me towards an antennae which is probably only worth it if you have cable or the fancy hdtv stuff. Im definitely not a gearhead and prefer not to waste hours and hours of my life watching TV each day, but this thing, for the price, couldnt even bring in the basic channels. I was constantly adjusting. Im gonna get the cheaper ones this time. Methinks $$ was the main reason he suggested this model to me.

This actually got less channels than my old RCA rabbit ears. The non HD reception was poor (though I've never gotten it good on this TV). It does allow the fine tuning of some channels. Radio Shack touts this as an HDTV antenna, but I don't think it is any different than an sdtv amplified antennae.

In Albuquerque, Ch 4 and 13 are hard to pull in on HDTV. I can barely get the regualar channels, let alone the HDTV ones.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

The folks who are unhappy with this antenna must have analog TVs. It does not work well with those channels (4, 5, etc). But go to the digital ones (4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, etc) and the picture is fantastic. The few shows in Hi Def are too good...ya really see the freckles!
The instructions say to extend or collapse the antennae depending on channel range you want to watch. That would be a big nuisance but I found it works fine for all channels with the antennae extended for only two segments.
I was disappointed to find the coax connection is the slip-on kind versus threaded/screw-on. I've heard screw-on makes a better connection but I'm pleased enough as is. So far, no accidental slip-offs.
What I do not like is sometimes the picture's digital packets are not received, making a skippy or frozen picture. I do not know if this is the fault of the antenna not receiving the data or other interference not the fault of the antenna. The gain control is on full blast. I'd rather have a constant old analog picture than this dropped digital data but ... our government regulators says we gotta go digital.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I recently got an HD DVR for DirecTV, but to my disappointment I found that our 6 local channels did not come in in HD. The only option was to plug in an over-the-air antenna to the receiver or the TV.

For the price, I could hardly ask for more. Setup was easy, and it took more time for the DirecTV tuner to identify all the available channels than anything else. About 5 minutes of fiddling with the positioning, and I'm now enjoying great reception on all the local HD channels (including "extra" ones that the main channels provide). The circular antenna for HD can be positioned anywhere from the horizontal to vertical, and rotates on its base, too. (Fortunately, all our local channels have their antennas in the same place, so I won't have to move it at all.)

My only complaints, and they're rather trivial, are that I would like a longer coax cable (it's only 6 feet) and it would be nice if the rabbit ears, which I don't have any use for, folded down more neatly or were removable.

One hint: Don't even turn on the gain knob unless you have need to. I turned it on right away thinking it would help, but I what I discovered was that the reception was actually far superior without it. So try it both ways and play with the antenna location and positioning. It's well worth the effort, especially for this price.

I replaced this with my $8 rabbit ears which I only get 2 channels that you can actually watch, and the same 2 channels seem to come in a little clearer with this model so I did not return it. Maybe it all depends where you live to see what will come in good or not- if I can just get FOX I'd be happy. I think I'm going to upgrade to $50- $65 dollar model and move this to the bedroom. If it sucks then I will take it back. But I guess this is okay but not much better then the $8 Rabbit ears.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I currently have a Zenith Silver Sensor antenna that works, but maybe once a week I have difficulty picking up one channel. So I thought I would try this amplified antenna. A COMPLETE WASTE OF $$$. This amplified antenna could NOT PICK UP A SINGLE CHANNEL, while the unamplified Silver Sensor picked up every channel. Don't bother wasting your $$$ on this amplified antenna. It works much worse than the unamplified Zenith Silver Sensor.

Antenna works fine. I have my stereo set-up in basement of house. I can receive FM stations ONLY when 22 db amp. is turned ON. (Not many stations received when amp. is turned OFF.) Nice looking unit, too.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I have to move the antenna to tune in HDTV channels. Move it to the left to get CBS, move it to the right to get ABC. It is most likely too much local interference as I am only 3 - 4 miles from the broadcast antennae. I recommend you purchase this first for HDTV reception, but if it doesn't work, take it back and upgrade to a better (more $$) antenna.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I live in a valley and it's hard to pick up FM stations. This antenna significantly improved my FM reception (with the built-in amplifier on).
