Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

The antenna worked great. Unfortunately, after less than 9 months of being on the roof, one of the plastic tabs that hold the booms open was cracked off by the wind, causing the boom to fold up and reception to be lost. Do not buy this antenna if you need it to last!

Realativly easy to setup and install. I have it installed on the chimney with the Radio Shack chimney strap mount. Here in the city of Baltimore, I get pretty much all the local and DC stations after the mandated switchover of June 12 of 2009.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I bought this terrestrial antenna back in the spring of 2006 right after I moved into my new home because back then they did not offer the local "free over-the-air" channels on my satellite subscription in "high def". They didn't have HD DVR's yet either but that's another story, but I had the best HD satellite receiver and I wanted everything perfect.

The funny thing is that shortly after that they did start offering my local channels in HD on my satellite service, and since I hadn't installed my new antenna yet, there it sat for over 3 years in the box.

Well I just installed the thing a month ago and I thought I would share my experience with it. I like the VU-90XR but you will want to purchase a separate matching transformer, the one that comes with it in the box cracked apart on me and twisted wires together and I couldn't use it, I'm not complaining because everything is reasonably priced.

Okay what about performance, well the VHF is perfect but absolutely no UHF what-so-ever in my case. I live exactly 30 linear miles from Cedar Hill where all of the 1900 ft trasmission towers are located and since I installed the antenna in my attic (single story), I guess that is the reason? Unless I'm doing something wrong?

With my degree in electronics something tells me that the wavelenght characteristics of UHF at that distance inside my attic just doesn't have what it takes to make it through? I noticed that there are no direct electrical connections from the shorter UHF elements & reflector booms, it must be imposed through capacitance with air as the dielectric or something is my guess. Also it doesn't have an oval shaped loop like some other antennas I've noticed do, not sure why that is?

The product write-up on-line says that the UHF range is up to 30 miles, but the box says up to 90. I think I'm going with the 30 miles and of course if its outside and up high!! I went to "Antena Web dot org" and I just was not able to use any info from it, it was just confusing me so I used my map program and drew a line from my house to Cedar Hill and saw how the line crossed my street, so that was my reference for pointing my antenna!! I figure if you can get perfect VHF then it must be pointing in the correct direction.

Well that's about it, I really don't even need the thing but hey it has been an education and if my satellite goes out when the dark clouds roll in, I can still watch the local weather or have a back up for some channels anyway!

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I bought this today because I was having problems with the old antenna in the attic. I could not receive one channel I wanted because it is almost 180 degrees away from the others. The old antenna is a smaller version of this new one. I put the new one in the attic pointed it in the same direction and checked the reception. Not only can I get the channel I was looking for but I get another that I thought was out of reach! The only bad thing about this antenna is it leaves a silvery residue on your hands during assembly and installation.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I live about 60 miles away from a couple of national feeds. I first tried this antenna and one channel had some issues but came in most of the time. I swapped this one out for a much more expensive (other brand) top-of-the line antenna with less results. It couldn't even pick up the one channel that was originally iffy. I then swapped back to this one and added a Radio Shack Pre-amp and I could not believe my eyes. On my Samsung LCD it allows you to see the Level of reception and with this antenna and a pre-amp the iffy channel was almost pegged totally on the iffy channel. FM reception is great. I would recommend this antenna to anyone, plus it is lighter than other antennas. I would highly recommend in conjunction the Pre-amp Radio Shack sells as well. Saving 80 bucks a month on cable is awesome!!!!

The BEST attic antenna on the market
By rightbryce from Casa Grande, AZ -- 30 miles from towers on 5/22/2009
Pros:

Best Uses:
Attic/Roof Mount
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

Other brand antennas don't work well in the attic. Trust me, I know. I just tried a different name brand and discovered it got zero reception in the attic. I quickly returned it and bought the VU-90 XR. I couldn't be more pleased. Now I get about 15 digital channels (about 30 if you count sub-channels) on both UHF and VHF frequencies.

All the major channels come in full strength from the towers in Phoenix 30 miles away, and I even am able to pick up a couple Tucson stations (65+ miles away).

Why install an antenna on the roof when: a) the antenna is unsightly, b) weather can damage the components, c) it is susceptible to more interference, d) you have to properly ground your antenna (more costly).

Trust me, this is THE attic antenna of choice.

This antenna came recommended by salesman for this area. He said 'we don't see any of these returned'. I ordered from the internet, [...]. Before I even opened the box it showed the range to be too short for 60 mi N of Denver. But I tried it any way. And true to it's tech specs, only printed on the box, it had very weak reception. I tested this against the Winegard YA 1713. The 1713 provided very strong reception and is built much better. [...]I doubt the salesman is stating that he saw this returned.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

Antennaweb dot org showed that all of the digital TV channels in my area were red, blue, and violet (weak) in strength and ranged between 6 miles to 54 miles away. Rabbit ears gave me one or two channels. I tried an indoor amplified square Phillips antenna [...] and it was no better than the rabbit ears, even when trying to orient it properly. Returned the indoor antenna and did some research online. Came across all the reviews for the VU-90 antenna. Having used similar antennas before, I thought it would do much better than the indoor units. I connected the VU-90 to the TV and placed the antenna directly on the floor in the house. Immediately the channels started working. I get at least 20 channels, most of which are good enough to watch. The only ones that are not require the antenna to be rotated maybe 25 degrees or something and then they work. This really is a great antenna and works as advertised. On the box it says it works best for digital channels that are listed as yellow or green signal strength (strong), but it works for me for blue/violet/red channels as well. The best part is it doesn't cost 200 bucks like the Winegard setups. Try this first and then spend more if it doesn't work.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

My dish doesn't offer HD locals, so I needed an antenna. I was concerned about the trouble and maint. of an external mount, not to mention the appearance. And while I read that attic installs lose up to 50% of their power, this is supposed to be a 60-mile antenna and my source is 20 miles away. So I just threw it in the attic and now get 75-85% reception on my HD locals. Not 100%, but no drop-outs. It does seem a little flimsy, so I'm glad it's not out in the wind. It might do a lot more outside, but this was easy, affordable and does what I wanted. The dish charges $5/mo for SD local, so this will pay for itself in a about a year- and now I get HD!

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

Read all the rave reviews for this "classic" antenna and purchased it to put in my attic intending to receive HDTV from two HD UHF (one is soon to revert back to CH12 VHF hence the need for the VHF antenna) stations 25 miles due south. Mounted it on a 5' Radio Shack mast (used wall bracket to attach to a ceiling joist in attic) underneath a U-75R UHF antenna on same mast that was to receive two UHF HD stations to the SW 35 miles away. Connected them both with two 300 ohm to 75 ohm adaptors, a factory made one foot and a two foot RG6 length of coaxial with connectors, then to a combiner, then to a 25' length of RG6 factory made cable with connectors. Down wall to a 4 port wall plate with coaxial inserts. All products used were from Radio Shack. I am now getting 100% signal strength and 100% signal quality of HD signal on all channels except 60% (but 100% signal quality) on a temporily low power one (that I couldnt pick up with indoor antenna at all before). After channel scan I am getting 22 digital channels, most at 100% even the closer ones not aimed and off center. The U75-R is even picking up a channel 71 miles away on the backside of the antenna at 30%! This VU-90 antenna is picking up a weaker public tv digital channel 7 80 miles away through its backside with <30% strength and although it has pixelation it is watchable depending on the weather! That tower is on a 2413' hill/mountain though. All of this inside an attic under very thick 50 yr rated architectural asphalt shingles on a 40 degree angle roof. These Shack antennas and accessories are well made and have exceeded my expections greatly and I am very pleased with the performance and consider it money well spent.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I mounted the antenna with an Outdoor Antenna Rotator, also from Radio Shack, when I had my roof redone in November of 2006. The antenna has, so far, made it through 2 Chicago winters like a champ. The signal is great even with it running through splitters to 3 TVs and 3 VCRs throughout the house. I upgraded to a new LCD TV in 2007 with an ATSC digital tuner, the quality of the picture from the new antenna combined with the new digital TV just floored me. While I'm just under 10 miles north of the downtown Chicago tranmission towers I'm also picking up crystal clear digital signals from the PBS station in Gary Indiana, over 45 miles from my house.

Ok some say they don't last. My old one went 10 yrs. Till we got a bigger home. Now I got a new one so I can get decent receiption OTA! Plus, its tops for radio too. It feeds my ACCURIAN HD Radio with aplume. Its smaller yet less wind load. So you can put it higher like 60'. Now we get OHIO,Mich,Kent, and Illinois. As well as Indy. With our digital conv boxes our tv pictures are nothing less than awsome. And this is our backup antenna system but we use it full time to watch the new subchannels in OTA Digital Splender! OTA tv picture quality now is better than the other services in this way. Thank-You! Radio Shack

I have an old rooftop antenna that received 12 channels with a somewhat weak signal after hooking up a digital TV converter box. I bought this Radio Shack antenna and thought I would try it out before I raised it to the roof. I just placed it on my picnic table only generally aiming it at Denver which is approximately 55 miles away. I then did a channel search. WOW!! I now receive 20 channels with it sitting on the picnic table. I can only imagine how well it will perform when mounted on the roof!

I bought this for my father for Christmas. Due to where he had his TV in his living room, the car port interfered with the rabit ears. Set up was easy. The only problem we had with instilation was it came with a 1 1/4" U bolt and the pole already attached to the side of my father's house was 1 3/4". We just had to bolt in a PVC pipe inside the existing pole to attach the antenna to. Once we had everything hooked up, every digital channel turned out perfect.
Since I am running into similiar reception problems in my living room with my bunny ears (not in any other room though so think there has to be something in the front wall interfering) I am going to install one of these next weekend.

Pulls in HD Channels Fine

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

Easy to setup. You assemble it using bolts and wing nuts. No special tools needed. A wrench is needed to tighten the nuts on the U-shaped bolt to a mast. A 7/16 in wrench, adjustable wrench, or pliars works fine.
I live in Brooklyn NY, about 8-10 miles SSW of the Empire State Building from where most commercial TV channels are broadcast. The antenna pulls in a strong signal on VHF and many UHF stations. It does a fine job of pulling in digital broadcasts now, even before the mid February 2009 change.
A mast is not included in the box, nor any mounting brackets. These must be purchased separately.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I bought this antenna 5 years ago to pick up my local stations because I don't get them on Direct TV. I bought a HDTV on Thanksgiving Day this year and was surprised to find out that this antenna picks up Digital broadcasting stations and High Def to boot. I thought I was going to have to buy a digital antenna....Wow! This antenna picks up HD signals from stations 55 miles plus. You don't have to buy an expensive antenna unless you have the money to burn. I live in Kansas where the wind hardly ever stops blowing and my antenna isn't bent in anyway. This antenna will hold up in any condition.

Compared to other antennas on the market It performs. I have the signal feeding into two different TV's. Works great with DTV Tuner.
I am sure in some aplications you might want to use a signal amp. I receive signals from 60 miles away very strong. I don't have it pointed directly at the tower

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

We bought this VU-90 35 years ago, before cable, before satellite, probably before you were even born. Once cable TV came into the neighborhood, about 22 years ago, we subscribed and left this antenna up there on a mast strapped to our chimney not doing anything. It has been hit by lightning and elements bent by Hurricane Hugo.
Last year we purchased a very nice Samsung HDTV. After replacing the 300 ohm – 75 ohm converter on the antenna (it was a mess) , moving the antenna to a location closer to the TV, we have the most incredible picture on local Hi Def signals. We still enjoy cable and all it has to offer but when the Race or the Game is on local ABC, CBS, FOX or PBS in High Definition we hit the “antenna” button on the remote.
Bottom line this is an excellent antenna, bulletproof, and will last beyond your grey years.
Any “old antenna”, not just the VU-90, needs to be pointed at the transmitting tower for the best High Definition signal strength. Good Luck.. eddie

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I am so very disappointed with this antenna. I had fun putting it together, but my enthusiasm didn't last long. With all of my local San Francisco stations being only 11.4 miles away and all at the same tower (Sutro Tower), it could not pick up signals consistantly. The signals would spike and fade and disappear altogether with no rhyme or reason. With me by the TV monitoring the signals and my partner on the roof, we tried to aim the antenna directly toward the towers...away from the towers...we tried every possible degree. Sometimes 1 station would be strong and all others gone. The only station I get with no problem, no matter which way the antenna aims is Channel 11 (KNTV) which broadcasts from San Bruno Mountain (6.6 miles away). I do have a direct line of site to San Bruno Mountain (I can see the towers from my roof) and Sutro Towers are in the same line but behind it another 4.8 miles. I also tried using a Radio Shack 8db gain amplifier which sometimes boosted the signal one notch but could not prevent the dropouts. I mounted it on a 10 foot mast. I just cannot understand how I cannot get at least a consistant moderate signal being less than 12 miles away. My terrain is somewhat hilly, but I thought an antenna of this size would be able to compensate. Has anybody in my area (up in the hills) had luck? And why does the signal strength jump around and drop out. It goes from strong signal to weak or no signal in a matter of minutes. I guess I will just have to reluctantly give up on off-air...

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

Purchased this antenna to replace RS Catalog #: 15-1868 "rabbit ears", which worked ok, but only picked up 5 HD and 5 Digital channels that were viewable. This antenna picks up 9 HD and 10 digital channels (VHF and UHF) perfectly, and is rock solid. One item about the installation, I made sure that I grounded the mast according to the National Electrical Code. Also, I used a grounding block for the coaxial cable to keep any static electricity from my electronics. I am less than 25 miles from the towers, so, I did not need a longer range antenna. I am feeding a 65" Olevia LCD tv with a built-in digital tuner. My goal is to get rid of cable tv, and the $60 a month fee. The last item I want to purchase is the Samsung DTB-H260F high def tuner, and that is just to be able to use the "guide" function, it is awesome. It shows up to 7 days worth of programming information. Even better than the cable box guide. Hope this review helps. I always read the reviews before making any purchases.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I installed this antenna in my attic after we decided to stop paying $60/month for satellite tv. This [$] antenna paid for itself in one month. If your attic has a lot of rafters this is about the largest antenna you can get. The 180" model would probably not allow much rotation. As it was, rotation was tight but I was able to get it done. A coaxial connection on the antenna made hookup easy. I used zip ties to attach the antenna to the rafters (one in front, one in back). The antenna weights about 5lbs so this easily held it in place. The antenna came with the necessary clamp and ubolt to attach to a mast, but this is more for outdoor installation or when using a rotator.Performance was great for digital. I am able to pick up the digital signals from Sacramento (90 miles north) and Fresno (90 miles south). I ran a 50 foot cable from the antenna to a Radio Shack Catalog #: 15-2506 1 to 4 amplifier that went an average 60 feet to each tv outlet. If you are using this to capture digital signals, I recommend hooking up a converter box or a tv with a digital tuner and fine-tune the antenna position. This will allow you to optimize your antenna positioning and rule out any other issues involved in getting your signal to you actual televisions. From here work on optimizing your connections down to your televisions. You may need a signal amplifier depending on the length of your wire and number of splits to televisions. My antenna was able to send a signal nearly 100 feet without an amplifier, but with additional televisions, I needed a 1 to 4 amplifier.

We get all the locals cept all but 2 channels are snowy. So I'm getting a new good antenna. We had at the ole house a RS VU-90 30'up on mast and a rotor. This antenna lasted 10yrs till we moved to new home. I'm considering another 90 or 190 RS antenna. Back then they were Archer RS brand. So im willing to try RS antenna again! Plus foldouts are great for radio as well.

It's a typical old-school outdoor antenna. After doing research on the post Feb. 2009 HDTV channel change I wanted an antenna that picks up VHF and UHF. Also, I used quad shielding coaxial cable. I'm very pleased. No cable(or satellite) bills have been paid by us for many years!

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

My situation is that I can get all the UHF HD signals with my existing antenna, but ABC is broadcasting its HD on a high VHF signal. I was hoping that this antenna would solve my problem. It pulls in the analog ABC signal great, but still no HD ABC. All my HD sources are broadcasting from the top of a local mountain, within a fraction of a degree from one another, about 24 miles away. I'm a bit put off by the ABC VHF signal. I'm going to try some aiming tonight, although it's pretty much aimed straight at the mountain by my compass. If no improvement, back it goes to RS.
Overall, the quality is what you pay for, I would not mount outside if I lived in a windy area. I think that you would find the elements on your roof or in your yard over time. That doesn't even consider a large bird landing on it. I have it in the attic, which works out fine, I don't need a built-out-of-iron antenna up there.

I'm getting 11 channels with good picture, some better than others but overall...very satisfactory! I'm about 40 to 50 miles North of New Orleans and this antenna works good pulling those stations in from my attic! Is it worth it, sure is, I'm saving $125 bucks a month switching to free service. I'm using an an air card mounted in a wireless router for my internet...no more cable bills....wahooo!

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I bought this antenna about 10 years ago and I knew what I could expect from this product and first of all, it does not have great gain on vhf and I also lived in a location that had buildings in the path of the signals. The vhf/uhf/digital transmitters are all from one location, with the exception of TBN and various low power uhf stations. I was not pleased with the reception but I knew that the antenna was not to blame as the signals were blocked to some extent. This antenna was 10.5 miles from the transmitters but that is no guarantee that you will get a good signal. This product has held up well and it has the performance that other antennas of the same design would provide. It is better if the customer does some homework on what antenna is best suited for the particular location. I read a comment that the antenna was unattractive and I had to smile as the product is clean looking and I watch the TV not the antenna. People get poor performance because they 1. Do not know what they are doing. 2. Use the antenna in a situation that will guarantee degraded performance. I have moved from the location that the antenna was formerly installed and I now have an uncluttered view of Deer Point and the reception is much better and this is what I expected. Also this antenna is fairly directional and potential users that live in areas that have signals from diverse locations must use a rotator. Garden City,Idaho

Of course if you put it in your attic you will lose some signal. So if it is weak try a signal booster and if that does not work then put it outside. but for [$] I do not have a cable bill anymore.

I live in suburban Little Rock, in a bit of a valley, surrounded by close hills & trees on all sides. Transmission towers are in opposite directions from me. I primarily use digital broadcasts.
I had the "best" amplified indoor antenna from that big-yellow-sign store mounted in my attic, connected through my standard in-home coax to a single TV. After an hour of positioning I was getting most of the nearby digital broadcasts but was having "artifacts" with some of them.
Swapped that for this 80" RS antenna (for just a few dollars more), and even without an amplifier it cleared up those "artifacts" and brought in additional channels I wasn't getting before. And my analog reception is much clearer as well.
I'm getting 8 local UHF/VHF digital stations (plus their sub-channels) in up to 1080i clarity with surround sound, from my attic, without paying a penny to the overpriced cable/satellite peddlers.

A few adjustments later and I now have all the local channels as well as the digital versions. I needed HDTV for the big game and I tried a couple indoor amplified antennas but I could only get one station here in Boise. So I decided to pick up the VU-90 XR antenna and put it in the attic first to see if it would work from there. It's pretty big and maneuvering it between the rafters was tricky. Once I got it setup I received all the channels I knew of plus a few more that I didn't. The instructions could be better but they aren't completely horrible. For the price you can't go wrong. Mine is just sitting up in the attic above my garage generally pointed at 26 degrees per antennaweb specs for my area. I completely recommend this antenna!

I bought this antenna with the hope that it could solve my digial VHF reception problem. It did not. I live in West Chester, OH, a northern suburb of Cincinnati. With my standard (10 yr old) rabbit ears, I could pull in all of the local digital TV stations, except ABC (9.1) which is a VHF signal, frequency 10, 16 miles away (S-SW). I have a Sharp Aquos TV, purchased spring 2007, which seems to have a reasonable digital tuner. With my rabbit ears, while tuned to 9.1, I get a "Digital Signal is Low" message on my TV. First, I tried another set of rabbit ears - same result. Second, I tried a dish-shaped outdoor antenna - same result. Third, I tried this antenna - same result. I was using a single co-axial cable with gold plated connectors, an in-line amp, and was holding the antenna at arm's length above my head, while standing on the peak of my two-story house, pointing the antenna toward the signal source (with the VHF array "open" to the signal). In this position, I spent ten minutes on the phone with my wife, trying to adjust the direction of the antenna to get reception on 9.1. No luck. My house is in the suburbs, on top of a ridge, with no tall trees or other obstructions nearby. So, I'm not sure what the problem is. [...] The problem has to be the signal, the antenna, or the TV. I e-mailed the station about the signal: they never replied. I think my TV works OK, but will check on other's online comments about its VHF reception. So, I'm stuck trying different antennas. I really wanted this one to work, but it didn't, so I'm rating it Average. It's no worse than others I tried, but it certainly didn't save the day.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

If you put this antenna on a roof and have an ATSC QAM tuner in you television, you are GOOD TO GO FOR HI DEFINITION programs on the Southeast side of Chicago. You will get 14 digital channels and STUNNING HI DEFINITION programming. You will also get about 24 analog programs. It is so good, some people will drop cable or satellite, because FREE TV IS BACK. This "digital" thing coming in 2009 is changing the name of the tv game. Free tv is now an alternate to cable or satellite bills. Buy a Radio Shack "Gold" transformer for this antenna. Toss the one in the box.

I am getting a 74 percent signal from a tower 55 miles away and 90-100 percent from 20 miles away.
The antenna is large when the elements are spread out. With the technology these days you would think that we could come up with better looking antennas. Other than it looking like it belongs in the 90s the quality of the broad cast is great, just point it in the right direction and you have a great picture.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I've held off on getting cable for 6 years now and I see no reason to start now....I might change my mind if any one ever offers ala cart programming. I bought a new plasma yesterday and hooked up my powered, set-top antenna figuring I would get as good reception as I got on my old 36" CRT TV. But all the analog UHF channels were totally un-watchable and it picked up no digital channels. (As a side note not all UHF tuners are created equally...my 36" CRT tuner was OK but the tuner on the VCR has always pulled in more channels and the tuner on the new plasma is really weak).I considered getting another, more updated, set-top tuner for the plasma but after reading all the not-so-favorable reviews here I decided to skip them all together and go for one of the big guns since the reviews here gave me the impression that if anything will work these will. I was pretty close to buying the UHF only antenna mentioned on this site but there is one station here in Bakersfield, CA that has a digital channel on the VHF band so I opted for the UHF/VHF combo. Plus there's no telling how many other channels might pop up in the future on VHF band and I didn't want to have to upgrade later. I could have went with a smaller version of the UHF/VHF but figured if I'm going to go through the hassle of climbing around in the attic to install this thing then I only want to do it once. So I reached for the biggest one I could fit in the attic. Results? Exceeded my expectations. It easily picked up all the channels that antenna org said I should get plus a few more I've never seen before. I checked the signal strength meter on the new plasma and it was pegged at 100% for all listed digital channels and the HD looks as good as anything I’ve seen on the HDTV showroom floors. Granted, antenna org says I'm only 14 to 22 miles from the local UHF transmitters and they are all within 3 degrees of each other so I had a good chance of success. Bottom Line: If you have a compass and the space to install it, this thing delivers[...]

I use this mostly for VHF and FM and to suppliment a UHF DB8 high gain Terrestial Antenna that I bought from [...] [$]. The Terrestial Antenna recieved every station with-in 70 miles from 12.1 and up. This antenna does a good job with 4.1 and 7.1 that are ten miles from our house and I do get a better selection of FM stations with itMy only real problem is the connection from the antenna to the F-Connector to run the cable. It's a good antenna for the money, but [...]has a better selection with value for the money.

This antenna was very easy to set up and gets great reception. It is nice and light and not too large which makes it perfect for setting up in the attic. I installed mine in the attic to hide it since it is ugly and it picks up all the local stations perfectly. Once you get your antenna in, go here: http://antennaweb.org to find your local TV transmission towers and get help on the direction to point the antenna.

I bought this antenna for my parents awhile back and it works great, although it is not as attractive as some others. It picks up the digital signals and the pictures are crystal clear.

I live in Palm bay, FL about 54 miles south east from all of the Orlando transmission towers. My house is pretty much surrounded by 50ft pine trees, no other obstructions. I mounted it on the roof, about 25 feet off the ground, for best reception and it was SUPER EASY to set up. Did research on antennaweb.org to find out exactly where to point, etc... I get every analog and digital channel available in the direction it's pointing(2, 2.1, 6, 6.1, 9, 9.1, 15.1, 18, 18.1, 24, 24.1, 35, 35.1, 43, 46, 52, 53, 65, 68, 68.1) and some other ones that aren't even listed on antennaweb.org Very pleased with it's performance, would recommend to anyone like me who is a good distance from the towers. My only concern is hurricanes, I would most likely take it down and stick it temporarily in my attic if any heavy winds are predicted, but that would be the case with any roof mounted antenna. If you are still hesitating, JUST BUY IT!

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I bought this antenna to replace a cheap multidirectional antenna and I could not be more pleased. The other antenna is going back to the other store.

The signal on DTV is quite strong in suburban areas, even though I split the signal four ways without an amplifier. I receive near 100% signal on all but one channel, and that one is still in the normal range.

It also works well on those analog channels that have not converted yet. Before I had a huge problem with snow and ghosting (I may be in the suburbs, but I'm only a couple of miles from the airport in hilly terrain). This antenna eliminated nearly all the ghosts, and the snow, from all but the most distant analog stations.

Assembly and setup were reasonably easy as well, with well detailed, illustrated instructions. It took me less than an hour to swap out the old antenna, assemble and mount the new one, and have everything up and running.

The only downside to this antenna I can see is that you will most likely need a rotor if you live in an area where signals come from different directions. This wasn't a problem for me, and it's directional capabilities just eliminated ghosts in my situation.

I really believe that you would be hard pressed to find a much better medium size directional antenna. Not only does it cost less than the little specialized HDTV antennas, it works MUCH better. Five stars here.

I live about 45 miles from the towers in Los Angeles through some pretty hilly areas in between. I bet that if there were no hills the signal would have been fine. But as of now I am going to return this because I was not able to veiw any channels that were not full of snow.

I was looking to stop paying over $50/month to DirectTV for home shopping channels, so I decided to go for over the air channels(football and golf).I am 35 miles northeast of San Francisco and about 60 miles from Sacramento so I figured to aim the unit toward the city by the bay since most local channels were at 180-190 degrees from my location. After an easy install on the chimney of my two story home and a quick eyeball alignment to the south, I ended up with a dream come true. Some of the local UHF channels were somewhat snowy, but their HD companion channels came in strong. Altogether I think I ended up with about 36 channels. I haven't had a chance to count all of them. I had no idea there were so many HD channels in the area already! The standard "air channels" that are not sharp are offset by their HD channels that come in great so I am not missing any local channels. I couldn't be happier with my choice. The World Series and broadcast Steeler games in HD - NICE!. No Comcast or DirectTV bill - PRICELESS!!! [...].Down the road I may play with an amplifier to see if I can get better reception on some of the other weaker channels. This is my first go at this so I do need to research the pros/cons of an amplifier.

Comments about RadioShack 80" Boom Length, 32-Element Antenna:

I had one of these in my prior home (IN the city), and had it installed IN my attic. Did a decent job, but the massive cable runs I had and multiple splits required the use of a cheap signal amp. Once that was in, I was good to go - free HDTV!

We just moved - another 10 miles south of the city, and (per another review, thanks!) I installed a new one of these in the upper portion of our attached GARAGE instead of trying to get this thing in the upper home attic again. Well, that made for a really easy install, the cable runs are shorter, and it's easy to access if I decide I need to aim it a bit. Anyhow, my HDTV signals are all coming in at 100% except for 1 station which is 80%. I also record FM radio using my computer (split of cable run), and signals come in CRISP.

For the money, you can't go wrong. This antenna is big enough to suck TONS of signal out of the air for you, yet small enough to fit in most upper portions of most houses (upper attic, or garage attic). Even though it's well over 6 feet long, it's very light and easy to handle and install. I would not recommend installing ON your roof unless absolutely necessary due to obstructions. Really strong storms could eventually turn this thing into spaghetti....

Out of all my friends, I'm the only one that can get CBS HD in my area(and it comes in about 75%). NBC is mid 90's, Fox is high 90's, and ABC is mid 80's. I'm using G6 coax cable also. Great antenna, worth the hassle of running coax through the house(or making a few holes if needed).
