No, I am not getting pay to write this. I bought the DTV and the $23 dollars Radio Shack HDTV Antenna yesterday... WOW... pretty pictures. Can get all of my channels: Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, weather channels, and others. I love it.

I read of others of this converter dying.Mine did too. I used it for about six to ninemonths. Then it just suddenly died. The company would not do anything for me[...]. It is hard to believe that these companies would hear of so many dead converters and not do anything for us. They should make an announcement that they will replace dead converters.

I use this box daily and it never worked really got. Its hard to get reception on the few channels that I can get. I am very disapointed in the fact that it only last for 11 months.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Box worked great. Right up until we lost the remote (kids hide it to maintain control, and finally lost it, another story). Without that particular remote you cannot control the volume on the unit, only the TV. So if the volume is set low, you can't turn you tv up ever again. We have ours set on 100% and can barely hear it. Have been trying diff. universal remotes and searching for weeks. Looks like I'm going to have to buy a whole new unit. Only this time without the Government rebate. Which sucks.

Initially bought 4 Apex converters when the changeover went into effect. After about 6 months, 2 Apex converters stopped working.I bought the Digital Stream and installed it. Has more features than the Apex had. I wish Digital Stream were available when the changeover went into effect. If any more of my Apex fail, I will try to buy more Digital Stream units if they are available at that time.

This unit started failing just about 7 months into its' use. Just today the green light just kept flashing and the unit froze. The warranty expires in 6 months and I was told by the maker that there was nothing they could do to help me. Don't buy this product, don't even THINK of buying this product. It really is JUNK! So surprised that RadioShack would promote this poorly constructed and supported product with such a short life. Would not recommend this item to my proverbial, worst enemy.

I purchased two of these boxes. After the coupons I still spent around [$] for both. Each only picked up the closest tv station only one channel. After 1 month, one of the boxes stopped working altogether. Now the second is beginning to show a large black rectangular area of blocked picture off and on. Frustrating that we were forced to go to digital and experience these problems. Expensive junk!!!!!

Purchased this item so my daughter and four grandchildren could have tv reception. They could not afford cable. I was delighted that they can now have access to 7 channels. This is great little unit compared to the other ones I have. The only thing that I found was a problem was forgetting to set the EnergyStar SLEEP FUNCTION from the 2 HOUR time that was factory default to OFF so that it would not automatically turn itself off.
Otherwise, for the money spent, it is a great powerful little unit.

i have 2 of these dtv units since they first put on the market. i'm getting another one because my collie chewed up the remote control.what most people doesn't know is that the signal now is on UHF along with the rest of the tv stations above channel 12. i have always had an out side antenna because of living out in the country & the reception has been very good. by the way i live almost 50 miles from the tv stations all8 of them.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Of the units I have seen and/or tested, this has been the best. Have two units still running, no problems. Temperature is surprisingly high but the solution is simply to keep it well ventilated. I never turn the unit off. Program Guide is the most complete I have seen yet, and easy to see. Other features are comparable to other units. Useful on unit channel buttons for those lost remote moments. Would like to see an easy to find code sheet for the Universal Remote as each battery change requires a reset.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
This has got to be one of the worse investments I've ever made. Set up is fairly easy but the quality of the product needs improvement. I've had it for over six months and it has gotten progressively worse. At first reception was good (if you can get it to lock on to a channel). Now the unit is constantly turning itself off smack in the middle of a movie or show. When it stays on, I have to re-adjust the antenna every time I switch to a different channel. Once you think you have the antenna just right and all the channels are working, a few minutes later you'll find yourself readjusting the antenna again. I spend more time waiting for the unit to re-boot or adjusting the antenna than watching TV; it's very frustrating.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
After I bought this product it lasted only for four months. The manufacturer does not support or provide any resolution of this product. Radio Shack does not provide any help either. It works great at the beginning but when it stops working it just dies. If they fix the problems someday maybe it will be worth a try but for now is just a bunch of cheap circuits that work for no more than six months.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Unit runs really hot, can't believe that this product comes with an Energy Star rating. It uses so much energy wasted in heat output. Then after less than one year, went to the dim green light syndrome, no output. Unplugging won't reset, no buttons will reset it. Since everybody is having the same problem, let this be a warning to those who still have a working one. Your days are numbered.

I have had this converter box for about 6 months and have had no issues. Very easy to use, for me reception is not that great without an additional antenna to pick up the signals better. The additional antenna (from RS) definitely helps.
It will shut off by itself if left unattended for periods of time. (about 5-6 hours).
If this breaks down anytime soon like other people are indicating, I won't invest in more converter boxes, I'll just go buy a digital TV, probably cheaper in the long run.

I bought two converters in May 2008.

I have two main stations in my are both less than 25miles from my house, one station gets signal of 86% while the other only get 35%. I have an antenna that pick up uhf 60miles away and vhf 70miles away, so this should not be an issue. I have a vizio tv that has a built in conveter box that picks up these channels without a problem and many others that don't come in at all with this converter box.

Make sure that this box is not placed on top of other devices such as tv dvd player or vcr. the heat will cause it to lock up. Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Will never, ever buy another Radio Shack product again because the product support is so pathetically bad.
Hooked this product to one analog TV at my home and it worked fine, but channel scan revealed only "weak signals." Took it upstairs to a different TV, and can't get it to scan channels. Spent 20 minutes punching every button there was on the remote to get it to do something on the menu other than "input" and failed.
Came to the RS web site to find some help and there was only the same basic info that came in the box -- no place to call, no box to submit questions. Have to believe this is typical of Radio Shack products -- once they have your money, bug off -- no product support.
Radio Shack doesn't sell anything I can buy elsewhere, and from here on out, that's what I'll do -- go elsewhere.

I own the Zenith DTT900 & the Apex DT250 and the digital stream has more features, better remote, & automatic set up right when you plug it in. The only thing the Zenith has over it is, it can tell you what is on other stations w/out turning the channel. The Digital Stream can tell you what's on 8 hrs in advance on the same channel & give you a description of the program. What you won't find on any other remote is, the D.S. remote has 2 separate volume controls...one for the box & for the tv. You won't need 2 remotes any more. Just got done disconnecting my mother's cable service. Saving her over 100.00/month. I was able to get her 28 crystal clear channels out of SA TX on 3 tvs using the digital stream in all 3 rooms. This is going to be the easiest to use, best quality, best picture/sound, most features for the money converter you're going to find. Buy it & be done with it!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
this converter works better than a couple of others i have tried. i waited for a month to read the reviews before i bought a second converter. the picture and sound are far and above the others. the remote is especially welcome as it is easy to use and controls volume, thus i don't need to keep moving three remotes around the room together. (converter,tv and dvdr). it pulls in the distant stations better than others. taking note of the other reviews, i suspect that all these converter boxes are heat sensitive and have placed it on a wire rack by itself so it does not collect heat from the tv or dvdr and gets air on all sides. i would (and most likely will get one as a backup) buy this machine again.

The box worked great, was easy to hook up, etc. But, after a few months the first row of buttons on the remote stopped working. This is the row that turns the TV on and off.

Real bummer!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I waited for the last moment to buy a converter box, and checked all stores but no one had any in stock, Iwent to radio shack and they were gone, there was no hope of finding a converter box (plus
may coupon only had one more day before it expired), So, I went on the internet and looked up Radio Shack and found the number for the Park
mall in Arlington, Tx. Called and they had 5 left.
I drove there quickly and retrieved 2 (plus they were on sale), I figured what the heck if they work, ok!. As soon as I got them home I started installing one to the 13" anolog tv, I was shock on how simple it was to install with out reading the instructions. I had an archer electronic db amp that I was using with the anolog along with my
cheap antenna, Programing was very simple, Started checking channels and I was astonished on
how clear the channels were with the converter box. I pressed the meter button and it read over green with the numbers ranging above 95+. Went throug all regular channels and all were clear. I
was suprised on how many more channels that the box was above to pull in for veiwing. I then went to the tv in the bedroom and wa la, very impressive, (I did have another archer amp, along with my 6ft electronic antenna and the channels are beautifyl) I realy recommend these boxes. (I did get insurance on both boxes in case any one
goes bad).

This is an inferior product. I had better reception w/ my antenna on the roof. Radio Shack does not sell a replacement remote and ours stopped working. We get a very weak signal on a regular basis, even w/ the recommended antenna. Not happy.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Movies, news, Other important broadcasts.
This unit extensively out performs ALL others on the market.
The response of the remote is immediate, and fast on repeat like channel or volume up or down very fast.
Not as bad as all others that you need to have a SCOPE on the remote to aim directly at the receiver and be within 10 feet for it to work, this one you do need to aim nearly straight but not accurately...
Power buttons channel right on the unit are a big plus also....
The only complaint is that I would like to be able to bounce the infra red remote control off a wall or ceiling when at a position I can't aim directly at the box....

I brought this unit to replace an Apex brand unit that I'd purchased at [...] The Apex was horrible. The Digital Stream unit has far superior picture and sound quality, even exceeding the s-video hook-up on the Apex. The Digital Stream unit runs cool and really hangs onto the digital TV signal. The TV volume controls on the remote (plus the standard TV on/off control) enables me to use just one remote when watching my TV programs. It costs a little more but is well worth the price!

I have one at home. Using with no problems since June of 2008. So I bought another for an older TV at work. The Govt. would not send coupons to an office address, so I paid full price. Well worth it!

Used this product on an older TV set with no problems. This product has a feature that shows you the strength of the signal you are receiving and with that I was able to rotate my atenna to just the right spot to receive several more stations. It is easy to use, directions easy to follow and have been using this in the house and in our camper with no problems. It is also allowed with the rebate coupon from Govt. and the extra amount I had to pay was well worth it.

I liked it until it quit working after 11 months. Power comes on but won't scan channels on any of television sets. Planned obsolescence.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I had originally bought a Magnavox unit for my mother so that she could continue enjoying free-tv and while there is nothing wrong with the Magnavox, I decided to give the Radio Shack unit a try and to my surprise, I found features on the unit easier to use and more useful features too, as compared to the Magnavox unit... First of all, if you lose the remote for the Magnavox unit, you can't change the channels, but the Radio Shack conveniently put channel buttons on the box itself, next to the power button, so you don't need to use the remote if you want to change the channel and are standing next to the box. Next, the "POWER METER" on the bottom left of the remote is a fast and easy way to take a look at the actual signal strength that you are getting from the tv station, and that, in turn eases the process by which you adjust the angle of the antenna, since as you move the antenna, you can quickly notice if there are any improvements in the signal strength, and hone in on the best digital picture. I also appreciate the VOLUME button on the remote- SImply put, use one remote for both volume and channel selection- the way I use that feature is to turn the volume of the tv up to just-above-comfortably loud, and then use the remote's volume to "Lower" the volume that comes off the box... (In other words, if the TV's volume is way too low, the Volume feature on the remote will only go as far as nothing, to low... OVERALL, in comparison to other models out there, and no, there aren't a ton of these units to choose from, I vote the Radio Shack to be exceptionally well designed, a GREAT remote and great features... Do some comparing and you'll see what I mean... I will also say that I enjoy the boot-up screen which is pleaqsing to look at, and another key feature is the speed at which this unit changes channels... I noticed that the Magnavox takes FOREVER to change channels, whereas this Radio Shack unit will go through the channels MUCH faster (not quite as fast as just changing channels the old fashioned way, but pretty darned close!!!) Well, I hope that helps you decide and I am sure you'll be happy with this Digital to Analog TV converter!

Pretty good converter, but you need also a pretty expensive antenna, like the one I have. It would be best to actually get a digital antenna, but mine works alright, it is an $80 RCA powered antenna. I bought two of these, one for my room, and one for my home office, in the office I only get a few channels and they aren't even getting high reception, I'm lucky if i get 30-40 percent, but thats only because I have a $5 dollar low-end antenna. Great converter!

I just bought this the other day and am totally pleased with it -- great reception and a lot of handy features. Much better than the GE converter box I bought last year. I especially like that it has a universal TV control so I can get rid of the TV remote. It might die on me in 6 months, but for now I'm loving it!

I have 5 of these on my sets at home (bought them before Feb. 2009) and they all work great. I also have one on me TV at work. Reception is great since all snow and interference is gone with the digital signal. The remotes also control power and volume of my TV sets so I only need 1 remote for the TV and converter!

Bought one. A few months later, bought another. A few months after that, first one failed. Traded it in for a third one. Now second and third one are failing. By failing, I mean losing channels I used to receive. Getting online to see where to point my outdoor antenna, I see that there are several channels within 10 miles of my home that I have never received (using large directional antenna with rotor).
It makes me angry to have burned my converter box coupons on junk. Now will have to pay full price to get something that might last more than 6 months.

I used this product less than 10 hours before it started to stop working. One by one the switches on the remote stopped working at less than 10 feet from the box. I bought it several months ago and placed it on the shelf when the change was delayed. Radio Shack will now not exchange or allow us to return it. Probably my last purchase at RS

Bought a Magnavox and this one at same time. The D.S. picked up all available stations where the Magnavox got only 2. The pass through was a great help while analog was still available. The unit seems to get excessively hot from internal heat. Concerned it will only 6 months like many of the reviews. Only buy if you have a coupon.

I hooked the box to my TV and I got nothing. I couldn't get the channels when I scanned. It was a weak signal. No picture. I tried two of these and both of them didn't work. I had a friend take it to his house and it didn't work on their TV either. I tried another brand and they didn't work either. So I am getting cable.

I purchased my first box a few months ago. It set up so easily! Extremely clear reception, even with my indoor antenna!! Only I found out that if I wanted to watch a program and record another with my VCR I'd have to purchase a second box and follow instructions on the FCC's website[@] purchased my 2nd box and I followed all the directions and hooked it up exactly as in the diagram, but there is no signal through the VCR/DVD/Box B side. Box A still works.Has anyone been successful with this?

I use my motor Home dailly, it is nice to setup and auto scan new every location and store the channels. However after only six months of service this unit quit. Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
The box was easy to setup; it shows signal strength so I was able to rotate antenna for better reception. The signal is decent but a little bit worse that my other converter box.
The problems not with the box but with the remote control: one-by-one buttons started dying. Now, I am living in 70s. To switch channels, I had to stand up and use plus and minus buttons. Also, enabled by default auto-shutdown energy star feature helps to limit viewing time :-), and sure I cannot change it anymore without remote. Ordering new remote will cost the same as buying new box :-(

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
After subscribing to cable television for the past fifteen years, we decided to "cut the cord" and opt for free TV (saving almost $800 per year).
We spent almost too much time reading countless converter box reviews. The more we read, the more difficult it was deciding on a converter box. Funny, but each review recommended a different converter box. We finally said, "Enough is enough...," and used our two $40 government coupons selecting the DTX9950 converter box offered at our local Radio Shack. We purchased these boxes for our analog televisions located in our first-floor living room and second-floor bedroom.
To date, we are very pleased with the performance of the DTX9950 converter boxes. The initial set-up was a breeze. Scanning and updating channels (two separate procedures) is easily accomplished via the DTX9950's on-screen menu. Furthermore, the remote control is bigger, sturdier (IMHO) and far nicer than we envisioned.
Our next task is matching a much improved antenna for our first floor television. Our current amplified rabbit ears antenna is very spotty when it comes to reception. In contrast, our second floor amplified antenna pulls in approximately fifteen-to-twenty razor-sharp channels (although it won't if the same antenna matched with our first-floor television/converter box). Perhaps, we'll end-up having to pop for an outdoor, roof-top or pole mounted antenna for our first floor television.
In conclusion, the DTX9950 is a solid choice in Digital-to-Analog converter boxes. We truly think the key piece of equipment is the antenna. Couple an antenna that is powerful enough to pull in multiple, distortion-free digital signals and you'll have a great combo when paired with the DTX9950 converter box.

We bought this in preparation for the switch to Digital over-the-air transmissions, but because the reception was poor, we put it away. Now that the switch is back on, I pulled it back out and the unit won't even power on. Dead after less than 100 hours of use. No support from the manufacturer and no support from Radio shack because it's was 30 days after I was unfortunate to purchase it. Now, I'm out my FCC coupon and the money spent. My recommendation is to avoid this product, especially at Radio Shack!!! Find a product with a much more useful warranty.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
My neighbor purchased the Digital Stream first and I set it up for her and it seams to work well for her. I purchased it since hers was working so well for her. I had already purchased a Zenith before I set up my neighbor's Digital Stream and ordered this one [...]. So I experimented with both brands and liked the Zenith better. I have a TV in my basement and the Zenith and the Trek antenna gave me more channels in my basement than the Digital Stream. I think the reason it worked so well for my neighbor is because her TV that she uses the Digital Stream and Trek antenna on is directly before a window so she has less interference. I gave a 5 because it worked so well for my neighbor and she's had no complaints and is totally enjoying it because of the extra channels she now has and the ease of use remote; but for myself I think I'm going purchase the Zenith because even though I did not get as many channels in my basement, it was more than I got with the Digital Stream. Also when I experimented with my other TVs the Zenith worked better than Digital Stream. I know the Digital Stream is cheaper than the Zenith, so if it's what you can afford then buy it. My house is maybe a 100 meters from my neighbor's and she gets a lot of channels with her Digital Stream, while I get less; but I got a lot more with the Zenith.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I have had two of these (used the govt vouchers) since last year and they are still working great. They are easy to use, and they aren't junk like the stuff priced around $40 and sold at [...], etc. Believe me, I did the research and this one was top of the list for best bang for the buck. Unless you're a downtown dweller, you'll need to research out and find yourself a good amplified antenna for best results. That might add $30-60 to your bill, but it's worth it. Two months of basic cable TV costs that much, and you'll find you've beat basic cable after a while. Another user saying it's junk must have just gotten a bad one in the lot. With networks changing their signals over you'll have to re-scan once in a while. I had this happen where I thought some stations had ceased to exist. This one gives a simple EPG (electronic programming guide) which is really useful to see what's coming up. Sure some other features would be nice to have like seeing a full programming across stations while viewing another, but it's got the basics down great. I like the signal meter on it too. It helps you adjust your antenna to the ideal spots for best reception across the board. To the other user who wants something cheaper, you'll get what you pay for. I definitely recommend this product.

After reading many online reviews, I decided to give the Digital Stream converter box a try. I already have a converter box (different brand) connected to another TV in our house and am very satisfied with its performance and quality of picture. I was suprised that when I connected the Digital Stream that it didn't detect as many channels as this other converter box during the setup, and most importantly did not detect one of our major network stations. This is not an antenna problem because I had already tested the other converter box on this TV and it had no problem detecting all the stations. I am very disappointed in the Digital Stream and returned it immediately. Unfortunately, I didn't get my coupon back.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
This is a great DTV converter box!Channel search was fast and easy!Picture is great! The remote worked even with my relatively obscure Sansui TV (using the code search feature). (And if perchance your TV isn't compatible with the remote, you can still use the volume and mute controls.)Most important: it has a Zoom Button on the remote! This is a very important feature, since HDTV channels often show 4:3 programs as well as 16:9 programs. With 16:9 programs, I like to see the full widescreen pictures and don't mind the black bars top and bottom; but for 4:3 programs shown on most of the HDTV channels, you get a small picture with black bars on all four sides! Zoom button to the rescue! Some other DTV converters omit the zoom button, and you have to go through setup screens to switch between 16:9 and zoom, which takes at least 6 button presses -- too tedious. The Digital Stream has the Zoom Button; make sure you don't buy a DTV box that doesn't!I also have the RCA box carried by [...], and the Digital Stream is much better for the following three reasons:1. It has a zoom button on the remote (See above about how important this is.)2. It has better program guide: shows about 24 hours of programming for the current channel.3. When you change channels, the on-screen display of current channel is less obtrusive. (With the other brand, the picture is effectively blocked by the on screen display for an annoyingly long time.)Price: at the listed price, this is a little more expensive than the cheapest boxes, but it's worth the extra!Even better, my local Radio Shacks carry the almost identical version of this box but without the analog pass-through for ten bucks less, making it as inexpensive as the cheapest boxes I've seen while being a better, more useful box. Since I don't have any use for the analog passthrough feature anyway, this was the way to go. The best box at the best price!

I hook it straight to my 13" TV per instructions. The first unit malfunctioned and would not hold a signal. My 2nd unit works, but I cannot turn the TV on or off with it.
I have to use the TV remote to turn the TV on and off. Then I use the Digital Stream remote to select channels. These units are not reliable at all. I don't think that there is anything "great" about Digital Stream. I would no recommend them to anyone.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
We've had one of these for about nine months. So far so good. The picture is great. It doesn't pull a signal in quite as strong as our LCD TV, but it's good enough that it never hiccups on any station.
It controls the TV power and volume. It's reasonably easy to program. The only thing I don't like is that if you want to see the program description, you need to pull up EPG. A little annoying, but hardly a show stopper.
A side note: Get the right antenna. Every area has different requirements so one antenna does not fit all. By switching to the right antenna, I went from getting 4 stations poorly to 21 stations solidly.

I installed two of these boxes at a retirement home in rural West-Central Indiana. Both boxes easily picked up the channels that the FCC said they should receive. The big Analog/Digital button makes it easy to flip to watch the old-time analog signals. The universal remote powers and controls the volume on older Zenith TV's too. Respectable program guide as well.

You need to have a good antenae or a outdoor antenae to get all the channels .I was able to program the remote to control the volume on the upstairs TV but not the older TV. Ok for younger people not for older ones.I have been trying to show this older couple who bought one of these boxes also they purchased a antenna one of the round smart antennas , they dont understand how to use it , i set it up where it wouldn't turn off but it shuts off anyway after about 12 hours . I dont think that the people who thought of all this dtv stuff was thinking about our older americans they don't understand and can't remember what you tell them .the couple i have been trying to help was going to go buy a new tv thinking they would need one anyway even though they just spent all that money on the box and antenna and HONESTLY i think they would come out better to do that cause then they could just press the channel up or down button on the tv and get the channels they want to watch rather than having 3 different remotes they get confused they dont understand that they have to leave the tv on channel 3 and turn the converter box to the channel they want to watch. I think the goverment is just trying to make money and they are these people didn't even get a coupon so they paid full price . the remote is not easy to setup to work with your tv. i setup a RCA for my inlaws it is very easy to operate and setup , i purchased a magnavox not as easy to use till you get use to it but it picks up better than either of the other boxes i have setup

Not to mention the fact that you have to turn off the converter box to get an inch or more of better reception. just a total waste of money . Besides all that it is very easy to install in my tv.Don't think about the remote because it does not work.

Installed really easy - when hooked up the signanl and picture quality was not as good as with regular rabbit ears. Also the signal goes in and out - but when switch back to rabbit ears it works fine. I have disconnected it until the switch is make final and then I will try it again.

I bought this converter box for my elderly parents. I selected it based on the generally good reviews and the fact that the remote has large easy to use buttons. I was not disappointed. Installation was a snap. I connected it to their existing outdoor VHF/UHF antenna, plugged it into the wall and let the box search for digital channels. It found about 30 channels and they all look great. Total set-up time was maybe 30 minutes and about half of that was spent trying to get the plug into a difficult to reach outlet. It really couldn't have been easier to install.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Compared to two other brands I've tried this one has been the best. I live between 30 and 80 miles away from most of the towers and am in a semi-rurual community. It is very easy to install and picks up all of the digital channels in my area with an indoor amplified antenna. It was necessary to find the best place in the room for the antenna and it must be adjusted from time to time to pick up certain channels but I can get them all. The program guide shows up to 12 hours of programming. The picture and sound quality are better than the other two boxes but the audio does not turn up to an acceptable level without turning the tv volume up as well. The volume control on the remote actually works and the remote will turn the tv off - but it doesn't turn it on.
When I was having issues with the other boxes, I did a lot of online research and learned that your connections can cause problems and I was concerned about that. To make sure that I had my VCR and DVD player connected correctly, I asked for assistance from a radio shack employee. He was able to show me how to do this without using any splitters, which can impact the signal and interfere with the converter box performance. I was able to discard both of the splitters and two pieces of cable, and this seemed to improve reception. After the transition on the 17th, I was able to use my VCR to record with the tv on channel 3 and the VCR on channel 4. When I had cable we ran it through the VCR, and I no longer need to turn the VCR on to watch tv - but if it is on, I can use either channel 3 or 4 to watch tv. I also upgraded to an R-6 quad-shield coaxial cable to connect the tv to the converter box and this seemed to make a significant difference.

I lost channels. I'm in town, not remote by any means. My remote fell and the Closed Captioning came on. I can't make it stop. I go to Menu and shut it off, but it's still there. I have gone back to factory settings and it's still there. I regret that I bought 2 of them before trying 1 first. Stupid on my part. I'm ready to drop tv altogether. Not much of a loss since I'm down to 2 channels anyway and they tile and the sound breaks up.

I HAD PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED TWO OTHER CONVERTERS THAT WERE A DIFFERENT BRAND. THEY HAD NO PROVISION FOR ADJUSTING THE SOUND VOLUME ON THE T.V., YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR T.V. REMOTE FOR THAT. THIS REMOTE HAS IT. THIS REMOTE ALSO HAS THE A/D BUTTON, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO SWITCH BACK AND FORTH FROM DIGITAL TO ANALOG. THE OTHER BRAND DOESN'T HAVE THIS FEATURE. AND THIS CONVERTER BOX IS ABOUT THREE QUARTERS THE SIZE OF THE OTHER ONE. IRONICALLY BOTH PRODUCTS COST THE SAME.

Stopped working after 4-5 months. Support had me reprogram it over and over, disconnect and reconnect antenna over and over for at least a half hour before she said they would send me a new unit. She put me on hold and the next person started it all over again. They are blaming the local tv stations (all 13 of them) for having a weak signal. I left a message for a supervisor to call me. I won't hold my breath for that call.

I do not live in a rural area. All my TVs currently require converter boxes. This one is the worst! It will only pull in some stations clearly. The other converter boxes in use through the house pull in all available channels. This box is in the same room with a VCR hooked up to the dTV Pal which pulls in all the stations...not this one though.
Don't buy it unless you have a roof antenna.

If you just need the bare bones aka no cable or don't want a cable bill, but you still want to watch television, then this converter box does what it is supposed to.
It's nice to get a few extra channels that I didn't expect.
I only gave it three stars because some channels are choppy (I'm not sure if it is because of the product or because I need an outdoor antenna. Though I do believe that the reception will be much better with an outdoor antenna) and the advertisements don't indicate that you STILL need an antenna for the box to work with your analog television but no need for a digital antenna any old antenna that you may have already, BUT your converter box will not work without your antenna.
It was great to call the cable company and have them disconnect the cable.

Does its job well. Eliminate audio hiss by setting you tv volume up to mid level or greater first, then use your converter remote to adjust final volume. If you have your main TV volume is too low and you try to turn up the converter volume, you will get hiss. As far as picking up channels, it's all dependant upon the signal you are getting from your antenna, analog would still come through with fuzzy reception, not digital it's either perfect or nothing. Try an anntena booster or better antenna.

Useful only in metro-areas. Does not perform FCC distance capabilities. Hooked it up on the farm with antenna and channels only come in on perfectly clear days. Digital loss of picture constantly. After 2 months the green light stopped working and cannot tell when it is on or off. Apparently built to suck-up the Gov. coupon program and be thrown away. Company not concerned about return business.

For anyone in a rural environment, unless you live on the top of a mountain and you have a $1000 antenna - it isn't worth spit.
If you can pick up a UHF station 70 miles away with your old antenna and television, you might be able to pick up a DTV station - 60 miles away.
If you have a station, that you can barely receive now, you will not be able to receive it with this box.
Your money would be better spent, buying a new digital television. Within a month - this box will end up at a yard sale or in the trash!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
This is a great converter box! I like that it has the full Electronic Program Guide unlike some cheaper ones that just tell you what's on next. It picked up all my channels beautifully! The one thing I noticed: I live very close to my local TV stations and with my amplified indoor antenna, I could only pick up one channel. I actually had to unplug my antenna amplifier and everything worked perfectly. With it plugged in, it was putting too much signal into the converter box. So, hopefully that helps some people having that same issue! Otherwise, GREAT converter box!

I am quite disappointed with your digital stream converter box model DTX9950. We are having several problems with this box but don't have these same problems with our other brand converter boxes. Also we had to rescan for another local channel and after that we lost the EPG for a different channel. The other converter boxes we have do not have these problems. The EPG for channel 5 has NEVER come back on your converter box. So these problems must be in your converter box since the others are working right. [...]

This box picks up almost nothing. I have a rooftop antenna that brings in every single digital and analog channel available in beautiful HD on my large screen LCD. I split the same signal and send it into this box and it finds only 2 channels (for those of you with Samsungs you know this is necessary to use the PIP function which will only recognize analog channels.) The meter on my TV shows a strong signal, and the meter on this box shows no signal. I live in a large city and am plenty close to the broadcast signal sources. I don't understand why this piece of junk can't find any of these signals that are clearly there as demonstrated on my TV.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Yes, the picture quality is amazing, and it really is as simple to set up as claimed. I now get great digital TV on my old, analog TV. I only note a few peculiar things:1) DTV uses the UHF spectrum. So, if you get strong UHF reception on your rabbit ears it’ll work; otherwise, you will need an amplified antenna, which costs as much as the converter box (sadly, the magical gov’t coupon won’t work for antennas). I am using an old Radio Shack dual bow-tie UHF indoor antenna with grid, and it works great. Signal strength: I get 18 main channels that are green, and 2 more (7 & 9) that are yellow. I live in Berkeley, and point my antenna at the Sutro Towers in SF. 2) It outputs only an analog signal at 480i. It does not have DVI or HDMI connections, nor will it do higher resolution. Still, you get a great picture.3) The remote is universal. I have a 20+ yo Samsung, and was surprised that one of the codes worked on my old TV. Note: for many manufacturers, there are MANY different codes listed. You will have to systematically try each code for your manufacturer until you find one that works on your TV. Also, it only works the power, video/TV switcher, and volume functions; nothing else. 4) The box will connect to your TV via either antenna terminal or 3-plug AV cable. You will have to first connect using the supplied coax cable for setup procedure. Then, you access a menu to turn on the AV RCA plug outputs. Then, you plug in the AV cable (not included) and remove the coax cable. I have mine hooked up to a switcher box, which now has: DVD, VCR, game console, and converter box connected going in, and one cable going out to my TV.5) If you are using rabbit ears with a UHF loop, and it has only spade lugs, you will have to buy a baluns adapter (transformer), which is not included. The antenna in connector on the converter has a single coax plug only, no 300 ohm screw terminal. 6) I am not sure, but I think that a power outage or accidental unplug from the wall outlet wipes out all the settings, and you will have to redo everything from scratch.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Alright just to put this out there I do work for RS in a small town placing me at the center of everyones problems. This box on the other hand has been rarely the cause of the problem. I have taken alot of my own personal time to personaly go out and see what the problem is and to hook up convereter boxes sense there isnt one in my area willing to do it if I can make a customer happy then one less headache for me.
Major known issues with customers:
1:TV stations not yet broadcasting at full power(resulting in weak signal or no signal)
2:Old wire from antenna to tvs multiple splices and or bad connectors(result weak signal or no signal)
3:Not owning a Digital Stream Converter box (result less features and more headaches will not say anything about quality cause they do work just less features)
What I recommend on a regualr basis and do myself when asked(each followed by a rescan to see if problem was fixed): check connections(replace if corrosion is noticable or loose)-> check wiring (looking for breaks and cuts, if its still twin lead not suitable and is old prown to problems replacing wire if needed) -> checking for proper ratings on splitters (5-1100 ohm is recommended for lower loss and impedence also number of splitters replacing multiple 2 ways for a fourway helps) -> checking the condition of the antenna ( missing tines can affect its ablity a few off are fine but half of them gone yeah thats bad, replace if its the later) -> last of all if that didnt fix the problem yes it may be the converter box but in my experience it usually is not.
I just notch most of peoples problems up to not being willing to get educated about what is going on and what is required for this change 30 minutes poking around on google will save you hours of yelling at your local retailer. Thats what I think.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
this box is the best i've used. setup couldn't have been easier, just plug in the unit and connect it to the tv, let it run through the initial setup and channel scan, and you're good to go. the remote is very easy to program with included codes to control your tv. switching audio and zoom depending on the broadcast is easy, the on screen menu is in larger type and easy to read, and the program guide displays the current show information or the upcoming shows for several hours. i have to use an amplified antenna to receive all the local channels, but the audio and picture quality are outstanding. the only problem i've had is the closed captioning won't display in the user defined settings, only the default settings, and closed captioning doesn't automatically display when muted which is a feature that should be added. the time-out feature is great for falling asleep with the tv on and the unit also turns off my tv.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Converter works perfect. It does the job it was designed for. However if you live in an area as I do, you may have a weaker signal. I have to rotate the rooftop antenna to get certain channels such as 3.1, 3.2. If I do this I lose 9.1, 9.2, 5.1 etc. I would suggest an amplifier or second antenna or a smart antenna. either way, you may have to play with it a bit depending on your location to the networks which are broadcasting.
P.S. Do not blame these problems on the product. It can only translate a signal you receive.

And if you want to complain about customer service right now, you obviously waited to the last minute to apply for your coupon. Everybody and their uncle is calling customer service because they dont understand how to hook it up. And boom. I don't need to explain the rest. The unit and the remote is well designed. It's menu system is rated one of the best in several recent comparisons. The same with it's picture quality. Don't believe the negitive reviews. Those are written by people wo are obviously not hooking it up correctly or maybe they expecting miracles. They most likely live too far away from the stations for any unit to work well for them with the antennas they have attached. This tuner brings in many more digital stations than expected with just a rabbit ear antenna considering I live more than 15 miles from the nearest staiton. Overall, this is the best DTV box in the $60 range.

Received UHF signals OK (16 up). Did not receive any VHF signal (13 down).
Called the Company and they tried to put the blame on my antenna. The
antenna is an outdoor type that received both VHF and UHF analog signals
on my 4 year old Sony Trinitron Wega TV prior to trying this Converter. I also
had purchased Magnavox Converter that worked fine on this TV without any
signal problems UHF or VHF. I tried the Digital Stream because its remote

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
The Digital Stream converter has performed reliably for myself and my customers. I have used 14 Digital Stream converters in a variety of digital-to-analog television conversions through December 2008 and all have worked as expected. I initially purchased my converter in July 2008 when Radio Shack accepted the Government coupon at its on-line sales. I was impressed with the product and found that it would be a good addition to my service business. Nearly all of my customers are seniors who rely on over-the-air television reception. The larger remote (as compared to other converters) and larger on-screen print makes it easier to install and understand among older television viewers. I have used other models of television converters, generally those purchased by the customer and bought through other electronic retailers. However when asked, I suggest the Digital Stream as the digital television converter of choice. It is among the few models that have a simple AC line cord and this simplifies electrical power connections in crowded media equipment cabinets. It would be helpful if Radio Shack could include an audio/video within the converter's accessories. Customers with cable television and satellite are using the converter as an alternate source of television in the event of a service outage. Adding the converter as a component to one of the "AV" inputs of the television makes it easy for the customer to use. The quality of the antenna cannot be emphasized enough. The Digital Stream and all other makes of converters function only as well as the source of signals applied to the decoder. The antenna will make or break the performance of the converter and in situations where the converter fails to perform successfully, consumers will blame the converter. An outdoor antenna or connection to building antenna system offer the best chance for success. Antennas in attics or indoor locations are alternatives where an outdoor antenna is not possible.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
This converter work's great. The remote is great as long as you figure out how to set it up. Remember to RTFM...
I think most of the problems people are having is from their antennas. Digital signals are weaker, don't expect your old Rabbit Ears to work if you’re getting a fuzzy picture on your analog TV. Digital either work’s or it doesn’t.

I inserted it it between the VCR and outdoor antenna. It came with the extra 75 ohm cable need to do this. I then added channel 3 to the VCR channel list.
It easily found all of the available stations and added them automatically. Some of the stations looked better, others worse. Probably due to the broadcasters end, not this box.
The unit has analog pass-through, NTSC video and stereo audio outputs on RCA jacks, and a switchable channel 3/4 rf output.
It works great and with the DTV coupon it is an outstanding bargain. This is the one to get.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I have tried [...] "Insignia" brand (also sold as a Zenith), RCA (from [...]) and this Digital Stream. I have not used the Magnavox (from [...]) but it looks very cheaply made. The analog pass-through was nice, but will likely not be a big deal here in a month. The remote is the best of them all. It is comfortable, but most importantly you can control the TV'S VOLUME AND INPUT with the converter box remote so you don't normally have to juggle the TV remote anymore. The on-screen "program guide" (the TV schedule) is by far the best. The "Insignia" brand would only tell you what's on next. The RCA didn't have any at all. The Digital Steam's brings up what's on for many hours ahead, and even allows you to view "detailed" info about what's on - like what happens in that episode of your program, or who's the guest. This feature alone makes this the over-the-top choice. Only con I can find is the Zoom/aspect ratio function. On some of the other brands, you can set the screen aspect ratio to "widescreen" (see the black bars on top and bottom) or "zoom" (fill the screen and crop the sides) and the box will "remember" the setting for EACH channel. This one seems to just change the zoom setting across the board when you change it. Not a big problem, since the zoom button is right on the remote, but a curious omission. I usually just leave it on "zoomed in" mode to full screen anyway. In my opinion, the other features greatly outweigh this very minor annoyance. Everything else about it works great, as you'd expect. Bottom line: Unit looks nice and is small. Remote is comfortable and functional for most TV's volumes and inputs. On-screen programguide is hands-down the best.

i just hooked up my new digital stream converter box to a tv we use for watching local channels in our bedroom. before installing the box, we would get less then good reception with a table top digital boosted antenna. some of the channels were barely watchable. after hooking up the digital converter box, we get every channel plus all the extra channels in clear and good sound as well, and i didn't even have to readjust the antenna after changing channels. so far so good, only time will tell.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Had this box for a while but just got around to hooking it up. First go round I used a brand new powered rabbit ear set right out of the box and got very poor service. Scan only found a few channels and those did not come in very clear.
I decided that perhaps my old cables were not the best so I bought new cables. Installing the cables bought me some more channels and better stability on the channels I already had.
I then put my old powered rabbit ears back in place of the new set to see what would happen. The old rabbit ears are in bad shape with one of the antenna broken half way down, but it always got good reception. Sure enough with the old rabbit ears I get flawless reception on all channels.
Bottom line is that is people are having trouble with reception through this converter box they should check the other components. In my case the new rabbit ears were the major problem. For me it’s, so far so good.
Can’t say enough about the quality and clarity of the digital broadcast. The difference is night and day.

Purchased this unit along w/ the UHF/VHF/FM Indoor Antenna With 12-Position Fine-Tuning -Model: 15-1868 (looks like the Star Fleet Delta) - took under 5 minutes to hook-up. TV has to be on channel 3 or 4 at all times w/ the converter box. Scanning took a few minutes for the box to find all the channels.
Functions as advertised; Picture is the best picture I've ever had w/o having cable/satellite. It opens up mutiple versions of the same channel (ex. Channel 4-1 and 4-2), each showing different programming. I was able to watch a program today on channel 4-2 that was not available through the cable. This begs the question: why pay for cable/satellite?
Drawback: in order to p/u the Canadian Channels, I have to turn off the converter box, manually tune into the channel, and adjust the ears on the antenna. Otherwise, the converter/signal appear to be strong enough that I don't even have the ears extended to watch all the other channels.

I have purchased 3 different converter boxes. This one is the best one. The remote is the most sturdy and easy to use. The buttons are large and well marked and the plastic is heavier. The on-screen menus of the converter box are intuitive. The box also has the option of passing through the analog signal using the remote. This is great if and when the digital signal is obstructed. I am buying a 4th box soon and will choose this one.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
The Converter box worked ok until the on/off light stayed red so you couldn't tell if it was on or off. I contacted Digital Stream customer support and they told me to send the unit back to them for replacement. I packed it up and sent it back as they directed. It was to take 3 to 4 weeks to be replaced.
Last week was 7 weeks and no converter box. I spent a full day calling and never was able to get through to them. I sent them an email which I have yet to get a reply. Today after about an hour of calling with no answer many times and a 45 minute was I got a representative who told me they had contacted UPS with the billing info the second week. They said I needed to contact USP. I contacted UPS who told me Digital Stream never told them to pick up the package and UPS would try to contact Digital Stream to get the converter box to me. Two hours later UPS contacted me that they had been unable to contact Digital Stream and they were going to try to track the package and asked me to try to contact Digital Stream and to ask them to contact UPS.
After several unanswered calls I got through only to be placed on hold for two hours listening to the soft rock station of Southern California finally getting a recorded message that customer support was closed for the day.
One final thing USP said that if it's determined that the converted box got lost somehow they will pay Digital Stream. So Digital Stream gets $60 and I'm out a converter box and $60. Beware no service from this company.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
First off, I have to say that the folks giving this unit a bad review seem to be having experiences completely different from my own. This was my first converter box, I found it easy to set up, easy to use, works well, and after 6 months in service, it has been completely reliable.
At this point I've had opportunities to work with half a dozen other makes of converter boxes, as well as with DTV sets and even the WinTV6 TV-on-your-computer product from Radio Shack. In my experience all the converter boxes give about the same results as far as reception - I do suspect that individual units may have some performance variations, and certainly one's local area & TV / antenna set-up may contribute to variations. I have also learned that there's a surprising amount of room for operator error with people who are not experienced in setting up these converter boxes or working with antennas etc.
Bottom line, I would recommend this unit above others primarily because of its remote control functionality. The TV set's power can be switched on & off with the converter's remote & the set's volume can also be adjusted independently of the converter output volume. This 'universal' remote is extremely convenient & it's unique in my experience so far. Furthermore, the screen aspect ratio can be adjusted directly from the remote - other brands require going through a few steps in the Menu to make aspect ratio changes. The remote control provides all the features you really need, and another one I particularly appreciate is that the on-screen signal strength meter can be displayed with one easy click. This on-screen meter is the best one I've seen, it gives a clear numerical readout that is extremely useful for fine tuning the antenna for best reception from fringe stations.
The one con worth mentioning is that the EPG (program guide) is more limited than some others, so if you think that's especially important, another model might be better for you.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I've owned both the DTX9950 and the DTT901 for several months now. While both offer analog pass through (APT), here's a few important differences for those interested in either of these digital TV converters.
When you tune in a digital TV station in your area, you may want to adjust the aspect ratio, denoted by the "zoom" button on the remote control, to specifically fit all of your standard definition (analog) TV screen. The tube type TVs have an aspect ratio of 4:3 which corresponds to width vs. height. Most folks will want to fill in the entire screen with minimal video loss (black, non-video areas). Currently, depending on the DTV station X-1 vs. X-2 (for example), you may desire a different aspect ratio for each channel. While many -2 channels are not adjustable and are preset by the TV station to anamorphic, others such as weather channels ARE adjustable due to the sheer amount of information on the screen such as a 5 day forecast, scrolling text bar etc. Therefore, you may want a squeezed aspect ratio for the weather channel to get all the information on your analog TV. On the DTX9950 this is anamorphic, or 16:9.
Once you set up and memorize all the specific local channels, the Zenith 'remembers' the aspect ratio information you program for each and every specific channel X-1 or X-2. As you flip through the channels, and later return to that channel, it has that same aspect ratio that you defined earlier - as it should. Enter the Digital Stream DTX-9950, once that aspect ratio is selected, >ALL< your local channels follow that same selection! The exception may be the -2 stations that are predefined as "anamorphic" by the local TV station that you can't change. This means that you can NOT select one aspect ratio for one channel and another aspect ratio for another channel and expect them to be kept in memory - there's only ONE selection for ALL channels. Example, if you select squeezed format (16:9) for one channel, ALL -1 & -2 channels are squeezed unless the -2 channel is fixed by the station to anamorphic. Most folks won't desire this.
In my area, I have a weather station on a -2 channel. Unlike many other -2 channels, on that channel, I can adjust the aspect ratio to anything I desire such as Zoom, Anamorphic, 14:9, 16:9 on the DTX9950, meaning it is NOT fixed by the local TV station to anamorphic. This weather formatted station requires a squeezed mode to get ALL the information on the analog TV screen. I don't want the other channels to have this same squeezed horizontal mode, ONLY the weather channel. With the DTX9950, once it is set to a particular aspect ratio, >ALL< channels will be at that same aspect ratio including on the X-1 channel side. This means that every channel that requires something different must be manually selected each and every time you visit that channel. Therefore, there is only ONE setting in regards to a user adjustable aspect ratio at any given time.
It is therefore MUCH more transparent to the user to have a design that once the aspect ratio is initially set up for each individual channel, it is remembered by the unit so that when you return, the video looks appropriate for the content AND for your analog (4:3) TV set. You should NOT have to potentially adjust it for each channel that has a different aspect ratio then, later adjust it back to something else when you change to a different channel. Unfortunately, the designers at Digital Stream didn't completely consider this.
With the DTT901, while the Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) is only for now vs. next programming (typically 2 hours which is minimally acceptable), you can reveal all the channels programming. Once the EPG is brought up, you can use the right or left arrows to move from channel to channel (once that channel has been initially visited) to reveal current programming. If you see something you like, highlight it, then just hit the OK button (center of arrow matrix) and you move to that channel.
Further, if you only input one number from the keypad, it will bring up a list of all channels that begin with that number. Example, "1" brings up a small window with 18-1, 18-2. You simply move the cursor (by the up/down arrows) down to what you want and select OK, you move to that channel.
While the receiver performance is close, I would give the slight edge to the Zenith product for fringe type operation. Needless to say, a good UHF outside antenna is well worth the investment and can make a night vs. day difference in reception! Even something in the attic is usually better than 'rabbit ears.'
The remote for the DTX9950 can (if programmed) control the remote control TVs volume control and can even set the TV into Video 1, 2 etc. This means one remote is all that's needed to adjust both the TVs audio and the converter boxes audio output. The quality of the Digital Steam's remote is considerably better than the Zenith.
Video is available either RF modulated (ch 3, 4) or a MUCH cleaner RCA output for video and left and right channel stereo audio. If necessary, get the appropriate length 3 cable audio(L/R)/video combination at your favorite electronics store.
After sales support for Digital Stream through Radio Shack appears to be better than attempting to contact Zenith, now entirely foreign owned.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
This Digital Convertor Box requires a very strong signal in order to get digital reception off the air. When connected to my amplified roof antenna, I get zero stations, although over 35 are available in my area. I'm only 10 miles from the transmitter. When using an indoor "rabbit ears" antenna, I get 10 channels but the picture on all channels is intermittent with digitalized pixelization and no sound on any channel. Readjusting the antennas has no effect. I fear when all analog signals stop next year, I will get no reception. Millions of others who think they can simply connect their "rabbit ears" to a convertor box will have a big shock.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I bought the digital stream converter box a couple of days ago and I could not be more satisfied. I also got to try an Insignia(aka Zenith) converter box before I got the DS, and I can say the DS worked much better for me. Both the Insignia and DS pulled the same number of digital channels, but the DS converter seems to be more sensitive with weaker signals, and gives video that rarely freezes or creates artifacts on the screen. With the Insignia box I also got good picture quality, but only with a few channels, that had the strongest signal, the other ones kept freezing because of weak signal. I know you're supposed to use a rooftop antenna for best reception, but I only have a rabbit ear antenna in my room, and as long as the DS converter workes so great with it, I'm not going to install another one.
I also like the program guide on this box, because it gives you info about all the shows that are to follow, not just the current and next one.
Setup was so easy that it tricked me into believing that the remote will work with my TV set by itself, which it doesn't, you have to read the instructions in the manual and type in the code for your TV make.
So far, there's nothing I don't like about this box, it just does its job perfectly, I say go get it.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Very easy to use. I would highly recommend this box. Don't use plain rabbit ears, I would recommend the amplified antenna with this product. Haven't had any problems since I used this antenna.

Maybe you need to do a little more research about this product. Your first complaint is incorrect because the converter box has nothing to do with your over the air signal. All the box does is convert the digital signal that your ANTENNA is picking up and converts it to analog so the analog tunner in your older tv can receive it. The converter has nothing to do with signal strength, it is not an amplifier or an antenna. With digital the towers may be in different locations it might be being powered at a different level. There are many factors. You might have to look at a larger antenna (and no there are not "digital" antennas a VHF/UHF antenna is what you need).
The issue with it shutting down now and then is just funny. Look at your owners manual for petes sake! There is an auto shut off. A timer you can set for it to shut off after so many hours of it being turned on, like when you go to bed for instance. Just go it an adjust it.
The "S" sound again "OWNERS MANUAL". The volume on your t.v. needs to be adjusted. Turn the volume on your t.v. up (with your actual t.v. remote) and turn the volume on the converter box down (with the converter box remote).
ALL of the converter boxes are going to work the same.

Got this several months ago before TiVo got around to saying what they were going to do about controlling boxes for Series 2 (Analog tuner).
Turned out this is one of the few NOT supported.
(Use is to have the Series 2 TiVo control the converter when the DTV switch take place in Feb 2009 via an IR blaster (included with Series 2.) So if this is what you want check with Tivo and get the right thing (Zenith DTT901 for example.)
So it works fine but you have to record everything from Channel 3 manually and the guide doesn't recognize available digital channels.

I own three of these analog pass-through DTV converter boxes. They are connected to televisions on the second floor of my home. The on-screen set-up wizard was very easy to follow. I was able to pickup 14 digital stations. All the station transmitters are located within 25 miles from my home. As far as the remote is concerned, I was able to control two of three televisions I have. The other one is over 15 years old and the remote couldn't be programmed to fully control the television -- its in a guest room and is rarely used anyway. I could not be more happier with this converter box. I am now able to view television stations I did not know even existed. Also, this converter box works very well with a cheap RCA ANT111 antenna.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I've had this unit for about 6 months now and found it very easy to connect, scan & program your favorite channels and does offer decent HD and digital reception. My dislikes about this product stems around the remote, from the poor layout of the buttons to what it's supposed to control.
Although the remote is supposed to be programable for compatability to any brand of TV, so you can operate your TV, volume & converter box, the compatability somehow drops off by itself and is impossible to get it reprogramed again! Or for some of my friends, not programable at all!
So now I have to turn each device on and off in a specific order so a deafening "white noise" won't be blarring from the TV. Of course this all happened after the 30 day warranty expired, so couldn't return or exchange it.

I live in an area where I can get digital stations from 3 markets. With Dish, I can only get local stations from Erie while I use the DTX 9950 for digital stations out of Youngstown and Pittsburgh. I first purchased the DTX 9900 but exchanged it once Digital Stream came out with one with analog pass through. I can use the pass through feature for either my outdoor antenna when the box is on or Dish Network when the box is off by using a switch between the two. With the Erie digital channels going full power, I may drop locals from Dish since the channels I get now look amazing off air.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
After almost one month in the mobile environment, the DTX-9950 is still working great! As a trucker, having a TV for information and entertainment while on down time is a must. Some drivers with extra $ to spend like to subscribe to a satellite service. For those of us who don't have the monetary means for such, a DTV converter with analog TV is a resonable alternative. My TV/VCR is a Broksonic CTSGT-8460 13" analog /w AC/DC. I purchased a small inverter to power the DTX-9950. I use the TV antenna that comes installed with the Volvo 630 tractor I currently drive.
When I shut down for the evening, All I need to do is rescan for the new TV market I'm in. In less than 5 minutes I'm ready to watch TV for the night. When I need to sleep and want to record on the VCR I set the TV to record channel 4 for the time I need and leave the converter on the appropriate channel that I want recorded. It's that easy!
After reading other reviews I thought I'd comment on a few....
JustMe from Suffolk County, NY on 9/8/2008: "Took the unit out of the box and it never worked. Weak Signal/No Signal. The meter would read '0'."
Have you gone into the menu to have the unit scan to find the channels to find the DTV channels in your area. Occaisionally a station will add programming to multicast; it would do you well to rescan using the update feature from time to time. You will also need to rescan on/after 2/19/09 when full power analog transmitter will be discontinued. Many digital signals will change channels one more time to their permanent assignments.
By Cat lover from Fairfield County, Connecticut on 8/13/2008: "Just got the Digital Stream DTX9950 converter box and plugged it in. It has a greenish light glowing but can't get it to shut off. Has anyone had this trouble. Both of the items I ordered do the same thing."
That "greenish light" is telling you it's on. Make sure you're using the correct on/off button on your remote (the smaller one on the top right corner). The other on/off button is for the universal TV remote function. There is also the on/off button on the unit itself.
By PonySoldier from Forest Lake, MN on 8/8/2008: "... lacks the ability to pass-thru an analog signal to your VCR. In other words, you can't record any television after installing".
Sure you can! Not knowing what your setup is I can only guess. Remember, the analog pass through function (the "A/D" button). That effectively turns the unit off (red light appears on box). You should be able to record accordingly. As far as recording OTA DTV onto a VCR, refer to my second paragraph on this review. This should work even with a VCR separate from a TV. Granted, you're stuck on the channel your converter is on but it works!
By OP Dave from Overland Park, KS on 6/12/2008: "I have a VCR which I was worried about, since I record the 2AM movie each night. No problem: just remember to turn off the DTV Converter, and the analog signal is passed through. So this takes care of that problem until February 2009."
Again I refer to my second paragraph.
By SaneoT from LA on 6/20/2008: "I hooked this up for my dad and found it does not have analog pass through. If you click Product Support, the diagram confirms a splitter is required. This is also verified on Consumer Reports. Having pass through would've meant less buttons for dad to press, since there are still a few stations that do not have digital broadcast. Other than that, the picture is sharper and all the 'noise' from antenna interference has been elimintated."
Are you sure you bought the '9950? Sounds like you have another unit. the '9950 DOES have analog pass through. That's what the "A/D" button on the remote is.
In either home, office or portable application, having a decent OUTDOOR antenna is a MUST! In most cases, set top "rabbit ears" will not work well if at all due to obstructions such as buildings, trees and yes, PEOPLE walking or standing in front of the antenna. If you cannot mount an antenna outside, try hanging one in an attic. The height and gain by using such an antenna will work wonders for you. If you absolutely must use a set top antenna, consider buying one with a preamplifier to boost the incoming signal. You won't regret it!
In my portable application, I have thought of two possible issues I'll have to watch. Yes, I've noticed the heat from the unit. I'll have to check to make sure it's ventillated enough. Lack of ventillation around the converter MAY be the reason why some reviewers here have said their units have either temporarily or permanently stopped working.
Also, will truck vibrations cause something inside to break or crack? Hopefully not, but time will tell. In the meantime, I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase.

I bought this unit earlier this afternoon. It was simple to setup, and appears to work fine. I can't compare it to others since I've not tried them. Navigating the menus was intuitive, but the buttons to press were a bit clunky (switching back and forth between button groups to navigate).
My biggest complaint so far is that while it has these wonderful options for setting opacity and text size of the closed caption text, none of the selections I made were honored. They were all ignored and the defaults did not change.
For now I'll continue using the CC on my TV.
Oh, and I have checked the pass-through AND the digital TV feature for recording on my VCR. Both work. But I'll not be able to program recordings for more than one channel any longer, after Feb-2009.
If I have problems later I may re-review this, since right now it is only a few hours old.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I bought this mainly as a backup for when there's a problem with my DirecTV. I don't plan to use it often. But I did test it, and I was blown away by the quality. It's only a 23 inch widescreen (HDTV capable but no ATSC tuner) TV that I'm using, but I was still surprised at how this 480i signal was basically indistinguishable from 720p video I've watched via the TV's VGA port. I only wish it also had an S-Video port and not just the RCA and RF ones. That would make it 5 stars.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Easy to set up and easy to use. Remote provides more features than I expected. I use this on a spare TV that is not attached to our cable system. This TV is used primarily when the house is full of grandchildren who can't agree on what to watch on the other TVs. Now we have access to many very clear broadcast channels on this TV in addition to watching tapes or DVDs. Previously the TV broadcast signals were too noisy or weak to enjoy, especially compared to high definition TV viewed on the other sets. Another plus is that this TV provides access to broadcast TV when my cable service is interrupted in the middle of the evening news - I hate it when that happens.

If you're willing to pay extra for a long term warranty, then this will be a good choice for you. Mine was impressively good for a few months. After a few months it began shutting itself off at random times and right away it would turn back on. It became so frequent that I just couldn't keep using it. It also began to have sound bleeding through from another channel. It wasn't getting hot and it wasn't being used more than a couple of hours in the evening. It was really nice while it worked.

Easy! Picture and sound greatly improved. More stations than before. Signal strength meter makes it easy to optimize antenna position. Remote works well. Totally impressed!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Before you buy any DTV converter visit [...]to see what stations you will get i.e Upstate Vermont isn't planning to convert over many stations. If you get weak Analog you may not get DTV. DTV does not require as strong a signal to be clear but it is all or nothing unlike weak analog that comes in lousy. This Digital Stream recieved 22 digital stations -1 more station than my Zenith, which I also like -using my Roof top 70 mile wing Antenna from RadioShack in south MA gets Providence, Boston, and some NH and Worcester stations. No [$]box accepts Cable or Sat, you need a TV game type coax switch. Remote would not turn on TV, only shut off but operated all of the box if aimed directly at it. Have not owned it for long, Zenith still OK after 3 months.

I too have seen the unit go funky after a few hours use. Returned it for an exchange, but only got back the difference between what the price was and the credit on the Federal coupon. Unit is WAY overpriced compared to other comparable retail units. Buy elsewhere.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The good = great digital TV picture AND stereo sound but ONLY when you use the 3 RCA jacks for video and stereo sound. The Bad: There is a BIG problem with the RF modulator in this box - it makes/adds tons of "snow" on CH3 or CH4 for BOTH pass-thru AND DTV. DTV works great with the 3 RCA jacks, but when you use the F-connector RF connections, the same picture is full of snow. The Ugly - this box gets way too hot compared to other units. IF the case was metal, if it was larger AND if it didn't get hot, I would be a lot happier.
Using the RCA plugs, it's great as long as you don't accidently cover-up the unit and start a fire.

The remote would not work right out of the box. Radio Shack replaced it without any problems. Now, exactly 90 days later the unit itself has failed. I wonder if Radio Shack will honor my request for a replacement? There are so many other options available there must be better choices than this.

Now using on computer with analog PCI TV-Tuner card. Superb results, good enough to record scenes for professional use on actors' reels.

Prior to hooking up the digital box, I was already receiving a high quality analog picture on channels 2-13 however was frustrated with on/off electromagnetic interference on channels 2 and 4.
After hooking up the digital converter box, I was receiving a bunch of new digital channels and just needed to fine tune my topside TV antenna using the menu’s signal strength meter.
After that, all electromagnetic interference was eliminated and my picture quality is now comparable to cable TV, best part it’s free!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I use this as my primary means of television in my home. I have gone through quite a bit getting all three of them working connected to the antennas in my attic. The antenna position on digital is very, very, very important, much moreso than on analog. Some of the review on here are complaining about the reception, well I will say from experience that these bring in stations much better than the other 2 types of digital receivers I own. Also, these are NOT guaranteed to give you more channels, it all depends on where you live and what the stations around you decide to do. Good news is that things will get better in the reception department after 2/17/09. For me, I get around 30 channels, including all major networks and some local independents. Buy this box expecting to have to do a little work to get all your channels, but in the end it is worth it. I have had cable for 15 years and the picture is 10x better than cable, and best of all it is completely FREE!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I live far from most of my broadcast stations, where I was able to receive weak (snowy) to good traditional analog TV with an attic-mounted, medium-range, amplified antenna from my hilltop location (with good line-of-sight view in the direction of my stations). Most of my stations are 66 miles away, and I didn't receive as many analog stations as antennaweb predicts.[...]. For DTV, it tells me I need a large long-range directional outdoor amplified antenna for the 66 mile stations. With only my medium-range amplified antenna in the attic, I get all but one of the stations it tells me I should get, and I also get one other that it doesn't think I should get at all. With my smaller than recommended antenna, the converter shows a strong signal strength (almost always well in the green zone) and perfect picture quality for these 66 mile away stations. Each station has several sub-channels, so I now have much better picture quality and many more channel choices than before. I was worried whether DTV would work well so far from my stations, and thought I might need to try a bigger antenna, but this converter works great with my old antenna! I should have got one of these DTV converters sooner!I haven't tried other converters, but this one works really nice. The remote is universal, and I've programmed it to turn on and off and change volume on my TV so I only need the converter remote. Really nice on-screen menus and program guide, and there's nice shortcut keys on the remote for functions you may use a lot, so you don't have to go through the menus (the 4-option zoom function is really nice, to decide how you want widescreen format programming displayed - zoomed to just the center part of widescreen, or letterbox with black top/bottom, or in-between, or squeezed to fit). You can only program the channels the remote up/down buttons go to with the search setup function, but then you can mark the ones you want for the "favorites" key, and go through all channels with the up/down key, or just your favorites with the favorites key (or you can enter the channel number too). The audio seems to be in stereo only if you use the separate L/R audio jacks and video jack; the combined RF output connector (channel 3/4) does not seem to be stereo.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I read a lot of reviews on the internet and went with this one. The people at radio shack were very nice and told me some key information...connect the converter box to your tv and antenna BEFORE you plug it into the wall. -hope that helps others-
I did as I was told and am very happy with this little box. I have 28 MORE channels! I only had 5 before (I live in SF,CA)
I love the EPG button (on the remote) that pulls up a page on your tv screen and tells you what is on in the next few hours. The OK button gives you a detailed description about what you are currently watching.
Have you ever watched some saturday afternoon movie and spent the whole time saying to yourself "what is the name of this movie" and they never tell you...now you have the blue OK button
Oh technology!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I have a small Panasonic television set with an accompanying rabbit ear attena. The setup was very simple and I began searching for channels and got all the channels I had previously (which is not a big deal). But when I finalized everything the picture did not come through. The only way I could get a picture is if I picked up the attena and held it up to my ceiling. When I did get a good signal the picture was flawless and the sound improved. Hopefully when the stations begin broadcasting in digital that my signal will be much better.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
Before, I was able to receive about 15 analog channels, most of which were very fuzzy. After hooking up this unit, about the same number of channels came through. Then, I moved the antenna outside, and was able to receive 48 channels, most of which are perfect quality. My distance to most broadcasts are about 38 miles. Moving the antenna outdoors made an enormous improvement in performance. As other reviewers have mentioned, the menu is frustrating. If you want to change channels while you view signal strength or electronic program guide, you have to press very many buttons. Overall very happy. Pass-through only works if you are using COAXIAL connection to TV, not the composite video cable, which was very frustrating to me as my coaxial connection is broken on TV and thus cannot use pass-through.

Setup was easy, after I realized I should program the remote by pointing it at the TV and not the DTV unit.

The Box Itself is great, the only bad thing is that RadioShack [...]I went back to the store and they said the order had not even been processed yet, they game me one they had in the store, but it had been opened by some one and the manuals were missing, which leads me to believe it was a return, I was also given the choice to continue waiting since "You don't need the box until next year sir" or "you can get $30 back but RadioShack keeps the $40 government coupon" (those were the actual words of the store manager) so I took the open box and went back to my home very disappointed in RadioShack.Oh i was also told "RadioShack is doing everyone a favor by providing this converter boxes and even delivering them at no extra cost"... which just made my jaw fall to the floor when i heard those words coming out of the manager... i took the box and i ran for the hills.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I live about 65-70 miles, or an hours drive, from the nearest broadcast city. My tv is a 14" Sharp, not sure on the year. The local channels have always been fuzzy out here, even Fox on occasion. I got my two DTV boxes last week, and with my coupons they were only [$] a piece, plus it's an Energy Star model. Once I figured everything out I was really surprised at how well the picture came in, even on the weakest channels. I still get All my local channels. I was worried that I might need to get an outdoor antenna, living out in the middle of nowhere, but so far it works great without one. I do get a little brake-up now and then for the weaker stations, but its been minor and so far has always come back. I love the built-in TV Guide. If things change I'll write an update, but for now I highly recommend this model to anyone who is still looking for a DTV box to buy.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
The Analog RF Pass Through function works well (box off).
As far as I can tell, the Digital Version of the major local stations are currently being broadcast on the UHF band (as indicated on the display during Auto Program). I used (2) external antennas, pointed in different directions, with good results (picked up ALL Major channels and a lot of Minor channels (currently almost useless but interesting). I imagine this will change when we go ALL digital.
If you want Stereo sound, you'll have to use the RCA Jacks. The modulator output is Mono. You can always buy a stereo modulator but it will not turn on and off with the converter box as there is no outlet to control an external device.
You can "Auto Add" and manually delete channels. This is useful if using rotary or multiple antennas (you won't lose what the box previously found).
In my opinion, this is currently one of the best "low end" boxes and it's AVAILABLE!!!
There are "high end" boxes out there that have multiple video (other than 480i) and audio formats but they are MUCH more expensive and are probably useless for people who just want to use their current Analog TVs after the changeover.
Additional box feature descriptions can be found in the user manual.

I am very satisfied with both Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converters I have connected to HD LCD television sets. I have an outside Radio Shack antenna that could be inside the attic. (Do not use rabbit ears) Before this installation I viewed nine analog stations, now I get 18 digital channels and most are "high definition". Each of the analog channels has a digital channel right now and some have three channels showing different programs. I am a Direct TV user because I hate high cost cable companies because they lose power and the service is gone including telephone. I’m always having people coming over to use my land telephone during storms.
The remote works great and the units are small in size.

Bought two, one for den one for recording ota. Works great, universal remote works good, easy to use. Any converter needs signal to work well. Antenna is most important to any box. Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
I found the DTX9950 to be an adequate product that provides very good picture quality, however, be aware that if you are using the built-in channel 3 (or 4) RF modulator and you have a Stereo TV (or VCR) you will NOT receive stereo sound (just plain old monophonic sound). To get stereo sound with your Digital TV picture you'll need to use the three RCA jacks (composite video, L & R audio outputs) on the back of the box. It is likely that the other converter boxes that you can buy with your $40 government coupon are similar in this regard. The sketchy technical specifications never mention this design shortcoming. As other user's have reported, setting the "Preferred Connection" to "Line Out" drops the audio signal level by about 10 db for some unexplained reason, so if you want a reasonable output level similar to what you're getting with analog TV, I suggest that you keep this at its default "CH 3/4" setting. Doing this will give you a good audio level at the RCA jacks, which you might want to lower just a bit using the DTX9950's volume control to about 16 (out of 20) for the very best results. Doing this will give you good sounding stereo recordings with your VCR, DVD-R or when viewing on your TV. Although using the built-in channel 3 (or 4) RF modulator makes it easy to hook-up the DTX9950 when you first get it home, connecting to the three RCA jacks will not only give you an improved picture but it also delivers the best audio to your equipment at the same time.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream Digital-to-Analog Converter w/ Pass-through:
DTX9950 - For Queens, New York - This product had some bad reviews before I bought it, but, they were false unless people writing reviews lived in the countryside. DTX9950 not just was able to catch many stations with crystal clear picture using normal analog rabbit-ear indoor antenna, but also improve the quality of sound for digital stations a lot. It scans for available digital channels with a single click on remote (Very good quality remote). Sound quality is very high with DTX9950. It comes with parental control, and, entire menu is very user-friendly. It is a $40 Coupon Eligible box and for about $4-$5 extra, you can insure it for entire year at Radio Shack. I would highly recomend you buy Terk HDTVa indoor antenna if you want to have finest quality video and audio quality. DTX9950 comes with Analog-to-Digital Passthrough so switching between Analog and Digital signals is all about pressing a button. DTX9950 have a built in TV-Guide (Program Schedules) for about 12 hours. You can check time, date, day, signal strength, tv station name, whether tv station you're watching is HD or not, mute, customize type of captioning you want with style of text and background you want, parental control with password protection, and if someone at your tv station spent a bit extra minute typing info. on what the program is about, you will be able to get that also. When you run a scan of digital stations after you're done with connecting DTX9950, change stations, and, with time, your antenna will lock into frequencies. Channes may not be available right after you run the scan, but, will be after 5-10 minutes. Buy with confidence, and if you're planning to buy a better antenna, like mine, Terk HDTVa Indoor Antenna, you will enjoy watching your new digital TV.

This is a GREAT unit. I spent a lot of time researching these DTV converter boxes. I went from 10 Channels in analog to 24 in digital and from a snowy picture to a picture similar to DVD quality. The only thing this unit is lacking is a programmable timer to change the channels for the VCR/DVD Recorder. I liked the signal meter feature. I got a nice clear picture even when the meter read in the 50's(with rabbit ears).

[...]The Digital stream changes channels faster, receives signals just as well, doesn't have the weird aspect ratio problem the apex has, is quieter than the apex, and the remote can be programmed to turn the tv on and off... with the apex I need to have 2 remotes... ugh. Now I'm wishing I would have bought both digital streams, if only Radioshack would have shipped on time, I would have. Oh well. The only thing the apex has that the Digital Stream does not is S-video. Personally, I think the picture looks just fine on composite. Also, I have an older Samsung HD tv, both converter boxes have fewer digital breakups than it does.

My house is only 20 miles from the Sear's tower. A large attic mounted antenna has always been sufficient for analog reception. I was shocked to hook up this box and find that half the channels were unwatchable. Took it back and exchanged it for another one (identical model) and it wasn't any better. Hooked up an amplified antenna and it was even worse.
This whole digital conversion is one of the biggest scams foisted on the American public. Nothing bug a huge corporate giveaway.

This box would not work! Got 0% signal no matter what channel you tried. The store in north Oscoda, Mi would not replace it. They said it worked fine, but it does not!! They said I must be hooking it up wrong, but as any body knows that has seen one of these there are only a few plugs on the back. You have an antenna in and an antenna out, plus the componet hookups. THATS IT. You cannot hook it up wrong. I would not recomend this product or the store north of Oscoda, Mi to any body that wants to watch TV now or later.

Long story short, I could not get a signal on either of two TV sets that I tried it on. I tried standard rabbit ears and an amplified Turk inside/tabletop antenna on on both sets. Both sets work fine without the converter on an analog signal.
I would think twice before purchasing this converter if you don't have an outdoor antenna.

I rate this box 5 stars for function, 0 stars for Digital Stream's customer service.
5 stars for function:
Rickajho from Boston, MA (7/2/2008), for one, covered it well, so I won't repeat. It works and works well. Some reviewers lament the loss of the Info button and question the need for the analog pass-through, and I somewhat agree. I now have two DTX9950s and I find both work as well as I hoped (and I love DTV!).
0 stars for Digital Stream's customer service (but 5 stars for RadioShack's support):
I first purchased a DTX9900. I liked it a lot, and went back some weeks later to get another. Upon getting it home, I discovering that I had two different models, the latter purchase being a DTX9950. I returned to RadioShack and asked them to give me two of the same model; I didn't care which so long as they both were the same. They replaced the DTX9900 with a DTX9950 (5 stars for RS, instance 1).
Neither DTX9950 worked. Testing showed that it was definitely the boxes. RF connectors may have been non-conducting. (If you get a box with grayish, non-shiny connectors and it doesn't work, immediately take it back for exchange. Digital Stream admitted to me that they had a defective lot.)
I phoned Digital Stream's customer support number. They operate only during normal office hours, so I left a message. I emailed them. No reply. Finally, I phoned them during office hours. After several busy signals I got through. The CSR was quite helpful, said that from my description the box was probably defective, to return it to RS for exchange. Upon questioning, she admitted that they had had a bad lot (apparent also from the many busy signals).
A full 7 days later I got a phone call back from my phone message or email. I'm glad I didn't wait for them!
Bottom line: RS replaced both boxes (5 stars for RS, instance 2--I was fearful of getting yet more defective units, but RS staff assured me that I could exchange again if necessary), and replacements worked and are working fine.
4.5 stars for manual (and maybe I should make it 5 stars):
Contrary to what some reviewers here have said, the box comes with instructions for programming both the included remote to work your TV and for your universal remote to work the box. Most of this is in the additional booklet.
I appreciated finding the instructions to be in decent English (in contrast to the manuals which were obviously written by people who think they speak English but have never practiced with a native English speaker--"Please to attach piece A to the piece B."). I thought the instructions covered pretty much everything, although I find this thing is so simple that nearly anyone but an extreme technophobe can use it even without the instructions. And setting it up (including channel search and editing) only scarcely requires looking at the manual.
Overall:
I'd give this box 5 stars if it weren't for the customer service agony I went through (including 4 days back on analog only). For me, and typical of most consumers, that agony has to count heavily against Digital Stream as a company and thus against their product.
