I had owned this unit for approximately 18 months and never had a problem. Then.....it quit updating my current position regardless of where I am when using it. When I purchased this unit it cost close to $300 at RS. I didn't get my money's worth.

at airports the radar seems to interfere with the satellites so I ALWAYS turned it off 2 miles before arriving at the airport. Once in a while it would jam up and I would have to turn it off, wait a minute, then turn it back on. That would reboot it and fix itself 90% of the time. But it was WAY better than reading a map. If the windshield is cold, it falls off. Also I had the most problems with the screen freezing up when its cold.

I use this almost ever where I need to go... what I like is it takes me where I need to go and then HOME...I don't understand the trip planner? I don't see the street names I'm traveling on or looking to turn on. For me it's too low on the screen and not bright enough. I would love to get a home electricial charger because the car charger is rather in the way in my 4Runner. Otherwise I never leave home without it! Get one!

I loved my magellan GPS, and just discovered it stolen on Friday. I'm really sad, and already miss it, as my husband just got lost taking my daughter to a birthday party. I got it at a very good price on black friday. I'm not sure when I'll find it that price again. All was great with my GPS, I didn't expect big things, so I was very satisfied. You want a fancy GPS, pay the price. Just make sure to keep it in a safe place, and lock your doors. Or you'll find yours missing too! I'm hoping for a new one for my birthday!

I downloaded the upgrade and tried to install it following the instructions, but my laptop didn't find a driver for it (in Windows XP) to communicate on USB port. I will call the tech support, but I wonder if anybody was able to update the firmware and how.

Gave it 4 stars because POI's are so limited. Taken it on two out-of-town trips and it worked great, even got us through confusing new road construction we didn't know had been done. It sometimes takes me a bit out of the way on some of the directions in my area that I know have a more direct route but it does get me there which is what it's all about. The audible voice direction is great and not irritating as some computer generated voices can be. I don't understand about all the griping about no new updates and downloads. When I got mine, I went immediately to the Magellan website and found new updates waiting. It must be huge because dialup takes 51 hours (which we still have out here in the boonies) and DSL takes 11 hours but the updates are there with maps of Hawaii and Puerto Rico and apparently lots of POI updates. Might rate it higher after I do the new updates if POI's are better.

Great Product, while there are no new upgraded maps yet, if you register at the manufacturer's web site they will email you when there is. Maps are just as accurate as any other GPS I have used. not as many POIs as other units, but so far everything I have needed has been in the database, with Phone numbers. Right when I first got it it reset a few times during proccessing, but has not done that in a few months. I love the detour function, if you are in a traffic congestion.

As an inexpensive (get it on sale) GPS, this is a great deal. It can be a bit unstable (mine has rebooted a few times while driving). However, it generally works and works well at that. The database is _not_ upgradeable, but the version in it is dated April '07, so it's fairly recent. I would not buy it if you need upgradability, high reliability, or advanced GPS features. However, if you can get it at a good price, it's a very handy thing to have around. Location accuracy seems very good. Note that a few states don't allow dashboard mounts (for anything) in case you live in California or similar states.

I bought this unit before embarking on a three hour trip across two states. 20 minutes into the trip the thing lost all satellites just as we were trying to navigate through an unfamiliar town. It stayed off for the next two hours trying to track satellites. At a gas stop I called the Magellan support people (in India of course) and they ran me through all the stupid routines of turning it on and off, resetting it etc... The guy even asked me to stand outside my vehicle with the unit for fifteen minutes to "help it" acquire a satellite! I turned it off and tossed it in the glove box.

About 2 hours later I turned it on again and it was working. It successfully guided us to our hotel and I thought maybe it was working now. We decided to use it to find a restaurant on the POI. We selected one, it routed us and off we went. After a couple of minutes it lost the satellites and we were lost at night in a strange city without a map.

When I took it to a R.S. store in that town the next day the clerk said they had a "lot" of these units returned. I said "add this one to the pile then."

Save yourself the aggravation, DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK! GET A GARMIN OR TOM TOM. I did and am much happier with it.

I love my magellan. My mother and I decided to purchase this GPS system because we are so bad with directions. She got it on sale for [$]. We used this device on our long trip to Georgia from Michigan and I must say "it was a lifesaver". Even though we were rerouted a couple of times, it calculated the new route very quickly. We were there within 14 hours and even located some nice restaurants along the way. Magellan was so amazing I decided to purchase 1 myself for [$]. Trust me, BUY THIS MAGELLAN.

I have no sense of direction at all. My [...] Rent-a-Car came with this installed. We loved it and purchased one for our private car. It is the very best. We are senior citizens and find some electronics difficult to use. This is extremely easy to use and is a lifesaver. We used it to navigate tricky New York neighborhoods and found it to be extremely accurate. After all, [...] recommends this. You can't go wrong here.

This unit was very nice, bit on the light side, would have liked a little more sturdy feel. I was very disapointed in the functionality of the unit itself. What happened to the blue-tooth hookup, the computer hook-up was useless it just offered me files I could do nothing with. The charging system was hopeless, I had no mains hook-up and it wouldn't charge whilst connected to my laptop, the other really bad fault was once it was flat (battery) you couldn't use it even if it was plugged in to the vehicle. Come on magellan you can do better than this, the mapping was very accurate. I'll be returning this unit for just not running when plugged in with a flat battery. My other which is a Tom Tom does all the things this won't.

Great unit for price, and entry level
By Pete, the commuterVerified Reviewer from Syracuse, NY on 8/12/2007

Cons:
Minimal POI's

Describe Yourself:
Commuter, Practical
Bottom Line:

So far this unit has been a good addition to my drive every day. The only negative I can fond with it so far is the limited number of POI's in its database. There are a lot missing and you can't update the unit. However for the price of the unit it is a great entry level GPS. Down the road I will probably invest in a more expensive unit, but for now I have purchased two of these one for my wife and one for me. Hopefully they will come through in our relocation to the Chicago area.

Moved from Nebraska to Virginia two months ago, and this thing was a total life saver, got us across the USA and helped us find a house in two days. Virginia has very windy roads and this bad boy helped all the way, glad to get one so cheap, no need to get a more expensive one, you won't use all that extra stuff.

[...]. That's silly. The mount is a little rinky-dink but a bean bag would work real good on this unit, if they would just make one. Overall, I like it. It's fun to use.

Great "Starter" GPS. Not a lot of extra's, but accurate and well worth the price! The window mount doesn't snap on to the GPS very well, but good enough.

This GPS unit is very good for the money, I loved the user interface.. and well about everything besides the points of interest. The points of interest are almost non-existant compared to some other models, and you can't update them. I returned ths model because of that, I just wish it had more poi's and they were updatable.. if that were the case I would pay [$] for it.

We just took a family vacation to Gordonsville, Virginia (in the middle of nowhere) and this got us around everywhere. We also took a side trip to Washington DC and it worked just as well there. The only issue we had is that it took us to the wrong Car Rental Location, maybe we used the wrong one from the list?
