My mother gave me the Magellan 4040 as a Christmas present and I used it for the first time in the town where I live. It was such a pleasure to use that I felt like a kid in a candy store.
My wife and I used it on a vacation to North Carolina, and we had NO trouble navigating the roads going down there. I then used it when I had to go record something in a County on the eastern shore and felt such at ease knowing that this product was guiding me to my destination. All I can say is "Mapquest, what is Mapquest?"
The only thing wrong with it that I can see is that the one time I tried mounting it in my car, it didn't stay very long, which I probably can take partial blame for.

Got my first on in August the speaker died in November. Got the replacement in December its March the speaker died just after the 90day walk in replacement was up. Other than that it was great maybe i wont get a defective one when they mail me the replacement. Just a suggestion but get the Extended Replacement Service Plan its sure worth it.

My Husband bought this for me for Christmas, tried it out in my home town (which is VERY rural)and was suprised it actually had the lane I live on in it!. I just got back from a trip to central California to look for a car for my daughter. It was extremely helpful in finding the routes to the cars we were looking at (and finding a hotel and places to eat). After we finally bought a car, we were en route back home and my husband tried to tell me the directions back to the freeway(he drove the new car). He got on the wrong road, but I didn't because I had my Magellan!. It is easy to use and the blue tooth works great.

I didn't know much about GPS units but checked them out on the internet on found the Magellan 4040 at a good price. Purchased after Thanksgiving and have been happy with unit since. Works great and I have downloaded updates from Magellan already. Will purchase same 4040 for my wife this week. A must buy.

Have read so many GPS reviews and come to the concluson that nothing is perfect. that being said i bought the 4040 and am very happy with it! My kids have tom toms and i like this one a lot better.Easy to operate and get going, easy to read gets me to 10 feet of my house.Wish it had a few more voices to pick from but will get used to the one it has. Also the battery runs down pretty fast but with the 4.3 display i'm sure most do. Also the case they give you for it is junk...use it for a change purse,to hard to get unit in and out! I got a nice navigon leather case at RadioShack for [$]and works very well. Got the Magellan for [$]at radioshack and think it was a great deal compared to others. Very happy

Well, in the past, the Magellan products had really been awful. They were at one time a leader, but dropped off the map until now. I had only used Garmin products because they were so much more advanced and reliable than all other companies.

Magellan has really made a great rebound. The maps, directions, bluetooth work very well. I really cannot believe the maps are more recent than my Garmin purchased at the same time. They are also rather diligent in updating the firmware for some really improved and missing features. Really great work and now a great price as well.

Also, if you are having problems with the touch screen - go to diagnostics in the System Settings menu and perform the touchscreen test 2 or 3 times in a row. I really have no problems with mine.

This is my second GPS unit and this one is WAY better than my first one (which I really liked too). This summer, I took my family on the ultimate road trip where we drove over 6000 miles through almost every state in the western half of the USA. We had no plans and no agenda, we just went wherever the hell we felt like going. The built in AAA Tour Book is absolutely awesome! You roll into town, hit that feature, and it gives you every hotel/motel in town (including a physical description, quality rating, price category, address and phone number). It's TOO easy. And then once you get your hotel/motel figured out, you can relax and figure out what type of food you're interested in for lunch or dinner, and the 4040 gives you that too. How Cool. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is (it froze twice crossing the border between California and Oregon and had to be reset with a paperclip). That being said, I would recommend the Magellan 4040 to anyone! [...]

This product works well but the mounting bracket broke within two days and have yet to find out from support where to purchase another one. The unit quit charging [...] I'd probably try a different brand next time[...].

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

I love it, however, twice it reset on it owns while I was trying to zoom in or out. First it showed the busy signal for about 20 seconds and then it reset by itself, then it came back with the option "Resume" and "Cancel" and that is what I like about, it did not delete the original route that I asked for.
Is it a very accurate map??? Yes, but once. It took me to the intersection of the opposite side of my destination on a totally different street and announced "You have arrived", luckily was just about less than 300 Feet away from where I was suppose to be.
The screen was stalled sometimes when I turned on the unit and I had to press the power button to reset the unit. That is something that Magellan company needs to have it fix.

I had exchanged a TomTom ...
By Keith D from Travelers Rest, SC on 6/25/2007

I had exchanged a TomTom 910 for the Magellan Maestro 4040. It's a much more reliable unit and the numerous points of interest beat TomTom hands down. I'm glad I bought it. The touchscreen issue is correct, the numbers are hard to press sometimes.

Good maps, address input ...
By F K from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 6/5/2007

Good maps, address input by zip code is very convenient. Text to speech is disabled when Bluetooth is activated, so you can't get guidance from the device and a person at the same time - kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it ion the first place. Touch screen is difficult to operate - sometimes takes many presses before it responds.

Great GPS System, beats ...
By J P from Los Angeles, CA on 5/8/2007

Great GPS System, beats the Tom Tom & Garmin brands with its expanded POI's and bluetooth feature. The sensitivity of the touchscreen is hard to adjust at first.
