Yea as a ham radio operator you must depend on your radios, Picked this one up on sale for [$] dollars, 15 months later the squelch went bad and now it does not receive anything. Made contact with radio shack but they do not work on scanners that are out of warrenty. Asked for a parts list thinking I may be able to fix it myself, but they did not have a parts list. So yea if your thinking about buying this scanner I would seriously suggest that you get a Uniden. I have one that is 8 years old and I always have it on. [...]

At first i was lost on how to program this. But was able to find a person at a radio shack that showed me how to program it in about five mins, after that it was the easyest scanner to use. I will make a video on how to program it when i get a camcorder and put it on youtube (youtube ID, roegoe or shearch ''pro 97 how to''), since i look for a week on the net trying to figure this scanner out? Good reception i get freqs as far as 50 miles. The batteries go fast so the ac to dc power addapter is a good idea while useing it at home. Get a warrenty for this my is just fine, but i have seen friend scanners just stop working for no reson at all. Overall i would say its the best scanner for the price right now, got mine for [$]

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

I bought this scanner a few years ago and have used it heavily. I was apprehensive of buying it at first because of the cost but I don't regret it at all. It has great reception and the memory banks are great. It is easy to remove or include memory banks when scanning the presets. I recently got an expensive dual-band HAM but still carry this with me because it is much easier for scanning. Get the PC-Interface cable and download the software. It is much easier to populate your memory channels using that method than entering them directly into the scanner.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

If you're wondering if this scanner is a good buy, it is! I received it for a birthday present and I could not be happier. It's light weight, has a sleek and attractive design, has tons of memory, and plenty of features. If you're wondering whether or not to get it: GET IT! I will add one negative comment about the scanner, but don't let it discourage you. Programming the radio for the first time can be tedious as the controls are not very intuitive. However, once you get past that and get the feel for it, it's not a big deal.If you're looking for a very nice handheld trunking scanner, this is the one! [@]

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

I use this, and my other Radio Shack scanners to monitor Police/Fire/EMS in my area. This scanner is great for on scene of events. I have had this scanner for around a year, still have had no luck programming the trunking. If you are looking for something with easily programmable trunking, this IS NOT the scanner for you. Also, the volume and squlech controls being ontop of eachother can be difficult to control when you are not familiar with them and their operation.

The programmable text display is great for anyone that is not good at memorizing frequencies and the agency that they correspond with.

Besides the difficulty of trunking programming, this is a great scanner for the beginner.

I was going to get the newer version that's replacing this one in hopes it would be better...exchanged it for another one of these.

This is the best deal I've found. It's reliable and once you figure out how to program it, very easy to use. Computer software (Google for Win97) works great on this one just like my last one.

Bottom line: Still the best!

this radio is a beauty. when you buy it you have free life time instore programing as well as a free techsupport number to call if you have questions the first year you own it. i would recomend buying nickel metal hydride batteries as you will get a longer lasting runtime out of it as well as you can charge it in the yellow cradle while using it with an optional wall chaarger. ive had the opportunity to play with quite a few scanners and this one is top notch worth every cent.

I have owned this radio for a couple years now. It has been dropped and abused more often than I'd care to mention and STILL operates great. If this radio were to ever break, I would not hesitate to purchase the PRO-97 again.
My only suggestion to others is to purchase software to program this unit from a computer. Doing so manually to program to NASCAR frequencies for race day, air frequencies for fly ins, etc. and then back to normal frequencies can be a pain in the a## when done on the radios keypads.

This is my second scanner and I like it. My first one was an entry level Uniden Bearcat. I like the ability to program it with the PC. I bought the USB cable and Win97 and all worked perfectly. I haven't tackled the trunking yet. I'm not a big fan of the volume/squelch on the same knob. I have a lot more reading, but felt it was a good decision to buy it. I also like that it has the ability to use rechargeable batteries.

Overall its a great scanner and its easy to program and use. The instruction manual is a little difficult to understand for a beginner. I bought this scanner to use with the fire department and it has held up pretty well. One thing I don't like about it is the volume and squelch knobs. They should have been separate like the PRO-82. It works great on VHF, UHF, and 800mhz, but doesn't have the greatest reception on the air bands. I would like to have seen it constructed better instead of the cheap plastic that was used, but it has held up pretty well considering how many times I have dropped it.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

Bought on Black Friday and began programming it, without using the manual. If you've been programming other scanners, this is a very intuitive scanner to program, basically. Program the frequency, what is the mode? That's easy, press the mode. What's the PL or DPL? It finds it for you. I don't know why people find this very difficult, just put some frequencies in and let the radio do all the rest really. Later on, you can tag the frequencies and talk groups and there's nothing difficult about it. The manual is a bit stodgy, but it is pretty good. It doesn't read the way some people would like, but you can understand it if you read it the way it was written.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

I had bought the Pro-97 about a year and a half ago at Radio Shack. It was highly recommended through a friend from Illinois. I've listened to the local Police Dept. frequency online since I was in high school. Well, that was my only option, was using my computer and I didn't have the portability. I bought the scanner and "played" with it for a couple of days and then set it aside. I recently pulled it out and wiped off the dust. I have never used a scanner besides using the regular scanning features, Signal Stalker, when I first bought the unit. I read the user's manual provided and yes it is extremely confusing, but I was able to figure it out in about an hour. Entering the frequencies was fairly simple; Setting the talk groups was even easier than the user's manual made it sound. I do not have any type of scanning, "engineering", or "space shuttle flight" background, much less a "PhD". I see where the frustration can come from though on previous posts. Within minutes, I was scanning the frequencies that I had programmed and was saving the talk group ID's. I was listening to the Public Safety frequencies that I had input shortly after that. That is not to say that I won't have problems with it in the future but for now it is great. Plus, I have the portability now. I guess it was just beginner's luck for me at the ease of programming this unit. I would highly recommend this unit.

At first difficult to program, but once you understand it it's simple. Good reception. Recommend buying rechargeable batteries, batteries die pretty quickly. Still don't understand the advantage of the trunking system difficult to program that. preprogrammed frequencies are a big plus.

I bought my pro 97 2 years ago and like everything there are pros and cons. Pros are good signal and u can hear from over 25 miles way. cons- easily breaks and damages and repair can cost [$] dollars which i did once. Now my screen has died (just by itself) and i am loking for a uniden scanner now. I recomended this to three people and they bought it, but now get a uniden BC-246T or the base eqquivalent. I have had good experiences with scanning helping police officers and neighbors and firends and even myself.

I guess you need a PHD to ues this. I was able to program my frequencies, but when I tried to scan the selected bank, I would receive nothing. As soon as I put it on manual, I'd get all sorts of traffic. NO PRODUCT SUPPORT (except the manual, which is not much help). I Initialized the scanner, but it erased the entire memory not just what I programmed (which it said that's all it would erase). I guess there's a trick to this thing, I would hope Radio Shack would let us novices in on it. : (

I have been listening to Scanners since the late 70's. I have sold them in the 80's in Southern California. Now scanning in Central Oregon. Listened to them all the way to today. I have listened to trunking systems with non-trunking scanners, then purchased the Pro-92, Pro-94. And now got a Pro-97, and of course the only way to program these, is with a computer program. Trying to follow the instruction manual for a novice user is just about impossible. I had to read it over and over to figure it out. But once programmed, the Pro-97 is a GREAT Scanner, a big upgrade to it's older brother, the Pro-92, trunking decoding has no cut out like the Pro-92 has. I recommend this unit to anyone...

Excellent Buy !!!

Reality Check: I just discovered this b/c the PRO-97 is my first radio. Hitting the Scan or going into Stalker II mode does not do exactly what you think it's going to do (for any radio). You're not going to follow a complete conversation unless it's some boring stuff like CB. If you want to get your money's worth out of any Trunking capable radio, like this one, you're gonna have to do your homework, and unless you know someone that understands the system, you're going to need an Engineering Degree -cause that's how I got mine programmed! For any of these Radio's you're going to need a PC, the PC interface cable, some web sites, an easier to read manual, and lot's of PATIENCE! To program the Trunking. Good Luck. [...]

Great scanner for the most part. I've had my Pro-97 for more than a year. Could not have programmed it without the computer and software. But with the software it is a snap to program and reprogram.Volume/Squelch controls are absolutely terrible the way they are configured and the volume control is extremely touchy without being sensitive.
I have used this scanner every day for over a year and have experienced no problems. I have dropped it a few times with no apparent damage. Mostly monitor EDACS trunking frequencies, air and FM public safety with great results.
I recommend this scanner, just be aware that the software makes programming so much easier than trying to manually program the scanner.
I bought a used Pro 97 for my daughter six months ago. Hers has had a couple of minor problems, but still a good scaner. If course I'm not sure how it was treated before I got it, but it did seem to have rougher treatment than mine.

The one negative is the trunking part of the manual. It needs to be written at the high school level, not graduate school!
Otherwise it is awesome. I've had 3 scanners from Uniden. The Uniden scanners ran off a battery pack. The PRO-97 uses rechargeable batteries, regular AA's and an AC adapter. I've had mine for 23 months. Not a single problem. I love being able to name each frequency. Don't waste your money on the PRO-95, the extra money is well worth it. Trust me, I owned scanners for over 20 years.

There is a wild fire raging at a town near us. We purchased this scanner to get the first info on evacucions in situations like this one. I need to know whether or not to hook up the horse trailer and start gathering animals/pets/food/water/clothes, etc.

So being a smart woman, I sat down with the manual thinking it would be simple to follow instuctions to get started. The manual is a nightmare for someone who has never owned a hand held scanner. I never did get the start up information I needed to operate the scanner and I think I'm just going to have to go back to the store for lessons!

Why didn't I practice before I needed it. Good question! Like most of us in the 20th century, I've come to rely on owner's manuals for learning everything.

Never occured to me that this would not be a simple operation.

Fortunately, this fire is staying away from dwellings at this point.

Please get your manual newbie friendly. How about a glossary to start. Trunk, what?

It broke once and was covered under warranty and now it broke again (won't turn on)...out of warranty of course. I think this thing is cheap. I use it all the time and it didn't take any abuse. It was only "dropped" a few times; nothing major at all. I'm never buying a Radio Shack brand scanner again. Take my word, I did nothing out of the ordinary with the thing and it kept failing. The power would cut out then it wouldn't turn back on. I only use premium batteries with the proper battery "retainer" (for lack of a better word).

Not recommended at all, don't even consider it. If it does break under warranty it takes Radio Shack 4 months to get it back to you fixed. I'm dissapointed.

Good scanner with a few quirks.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

I'll start with the quirks - Priority channel likes to lock up and stop the scanning, and the VHF-Hi frequencies are not set in the usual 5 KHz steps of North America.

Priority channel lockup is unpredictable. The Priority Channel can only monitor conventional frequencies. I have both conventional and trunk programmed, so that may be the issue. It will go several hours without locking up and then may lock up several times within 15 minutes. If you are planning on heavy use of the priority channel and will include trunking in your listening, you should probably look at another scanner.

The usual frequency steps cause the scanner to lock up if you use an external program to clone in frequencies that the scanner does not recognize. If you manually program in a channel, the scanner appears to select the frequency step below what you put in that it recognizes.

When I bought this scanner, I had several years of scanner experience, but no experience with trunking. It took a little bit to follow the manual, but after programming a few trunk talk groups it was easy to follow.

I found that the manual contained all the information I needed, but it was a chore to locate it within the manual. This included after having seen something and then trying to locate it again.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

If this is your first scanner, I would not recommend this one at all. I cannot begin to tell you how frusterating and confusing this scanner really is. The technical manual that came with it is a joke. It assumes that you already know what it is talking about with trunking, ID codes, fleetmaps, talkgroups, so on and so on. This scanner requires you to buy a programming cable, subscribe to at least 2 sites to help you with it. Overall, I am sure that this would be a good scanner to have, but unless you already know what you are doing, this is just too technical and not user-friendly at all. I have had this one for a month and am more confused and frusterated than this thing is worth.

great scanner, very clear and fast. i use it with rechargeables, does a great job. buttons are okay, ergo design needs a little work...they need to be designed with the idea that you are using only one hand to scan, and stop scan. i find myself accidentally hitting the wrong stop scan button(manual-button) when in 800Mhz mode. Make it the same button for conventional scan and 800Mhz. Also the text assignment is totally engineer based designed...(in short, it's tedious) Try cell phone designs for alpha-programming, it's more user friendly. Last gripe!
I hate the belt clip design. I have already gone through 3 belt clips, and now i have broken the actually area where the clip attaches...come on...better design for the clips and casing...please...i am reluctant to purchase another one, but the clarity has me thinking twice about it...hmmmmm

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

This scanner rocks. But, if you aren't technically fit enough to program it, you probably wouldn't understand all of what you hear on it anyway. For a beginner, a simple request of the staff at the store you just bought it will get your local county frequencies loaded and you are happily scanning away. For others who take the time to read the manual, buy the programming cable and some inexpensive scanner programming software (like Scancat or Win97), you can take advantage of it's capabilities. You can load it up and you'll hear more activity than you need, yet still have the ability to easily deselect what you don't want to hear at any time. I highly recommend this radio.

I had a Pro-94 before this scanner. But unfortunately it broke so I replaced it with this scanner. I've had it for 3 days and seriously thinking about returning it. The reception for the frequencies I use it for is very poor.I even purchased a different antenna just to see if I can get a better signal, but that didn't help. Although when it picks up the emergency channels its clear as day. Also, when the frequency you're on goes silent for a bit the scanner goes into a battery saver mode which I hate. So for some this scanner worked out fine, but as for me I think I need to switch out to a different scanner.

There is a easier to read manaul on line to use with the radio.(it not by radioshack) Radio shack needs to start putting more of the mil air bands in their new scanners and use better quality parts for the radios. Lastly they should listen to the consummers on whaat they want in a scaner.

I am very sorry to have purchased this scanner. I must agree with the other comment about the instructions being too complex. They are written with the assumption that you already have years of experience with these things. I've been looking for a good police scanner for several months. I need this for a number of reasons, including storm spotting, so to have to take this thing back after having it less than a day is a real pain. I tried following the instructions to the letter, but like I said before - they were so incredibly complex, they might as well have been written in a foreign language. (Edited by moderator.)

I've read some of the other reviews and would add the following: NO, it's not easy to program, but none of the new alpha-numeric scanners are... BUY the WIN97 software, aftermarket, works GREAT. Do your homework about your local frequiencies BEFORE you drop the coin, many police/fire/ems are switching to digital trunking, which this unit will NOT do. I agree, it's not practical to carry as supplied. A case of some sort would go far to protect the unit an make it easier to carry. Overall, I think this is a solid, well performing unit, and the fact that you can use regular batteries instead of a OEM pack that doesn't last is great.

The capability of the scanner is absolutely impressive. The instructions on how to program it are horrible. Absolutely terrible for someone who is not a "techie" because they don't spell things out in detail for those of us who are novices. They use a lot of technical jargon and assume that the user is familiar with a lot of terms. That's BY FAR my biggest objection with the purchase. In terms of the scanner itself, I absolutely LOVE it. It's far more scanner than I need, but it will allow room to grow. Be Warned! This scanner will not pick up police freguencies. The police switched to digital! I purchased this scanner for christmas. Had a difficult time with the instructions. When I changed the batteries, the scanner no longer worked. It worked properly for 9 days. When I took It back to the store because it was defective, I was informed by the sales associate that the frequency for the police has changed and the scanner would not be able to pick up that frequency. You need to buy a digital scanner in order to listen to the police station. I got my money back.

This is my first scanner. I've had it for two days now and I've enjoyed it very much. The range with the stock antenna appears to be good for my area. The preprogrammed channels have given me plenty to listen since I live near Houston. I get plenty of action on the Police, Fire and EMS frequencies. Programming the scanner isn't second nature yet, but it isn't hard. I've been able to program the scanner to listen to local airports. We'll see how it performs during Airshow season. :)

It took me awhile to fully understand how to program frequencies manually into the scanner, was still thinking 'old school' method of how older scanners were programmed. Programing was a pain until I got the ScanCat-Lite software. I'd like the backlite to be adjustable brightness. Take the Volume knob off and sand a little of the bottom so it doesn't stick to the Squelch knob. Get a better antenna, AC adapter for home and DC adapter for car, or use rechargable batteries. Overall its a great scanner for the price.

1st scanner and works well. Salesman Recommended. The signal stalker does work, but does not find ANY frequencies, all need to be programmed. YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY ASK FOR A FREQUENCY SHEET. Battery life is excellent! Reception is not very good with the included antenna. I have had my Pro-97 for about 4 months. I use the Austin Condor antenna on mine and it really helps the reception on all frequencies. The ease of programing the frequency ,Dept name and then the proper tone is fast and easy to use. I bought the Scancat Lite soft ware to program mine. It helps to really organize the banks. I also use a GRE Super Amplifier with it also. This works outstanding. I receive a 800Mhz Police Dept 45 miles away with it connected to the Austin Condor antenna. Please consider these options and you will be very satisfied. Thanks ,Chuck

A very feature-rich scanner, but not the most easy to use or program. Be prepared to spend some time with the users manual. Win-97 radio programming software is well worth the price. The small volume and squelch knobs on the same stalk are difficult to control seperately. On the good side, once you understand how to operate the radio it does an excellent job of receiving local analog trunking systems, and regular systems as well.

I don't have the money right now to get a digital scanner. This scanner has the full UHF military band that the US Coast Guard operates and also jets doing training ops. I like these scanners where IT allows you to change the modes manually when programming by hand or PC interface. I listen to my scanner in a very LEGAL way. It is good to have when there is an accident ahead or when someone is speeding and can get out of the way in time while others are getting mad and honking their horns. I have a pro-92 and I use that for primary scanning. I am also a Ham operator on 2meters. I wish Radio Shack would get back into the Ham Radio scene. I still have the HTX-212 after 10 years and it Still Works.

IT WILL BE REPROGRAMABLE (RE-BANDABLE) AND THE COMPANIES HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO PROVIDE THIS SUPPORT BY THE FCC. NINETY PERCENT (90%) OF LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS WILL NOT BE UPGRADING TO ANY NEW SYSTEMS FOR TEN YEARS OR SO... BECAUSE OF THE COSTS. MOST HAVE FOUND THAT TRUNK TRACKING SYSTEMS HAVE MORE PROBLEMS THAN THE OLDER STANDARD FM TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS AND PLAN TO REVERT.... MAKING THE PRO-97 EVEN BETTER AS FAR AS LONG TERM VALUE. NINETY PERCENT OF THE LOCAL POLICE FORCES HAVE BEEN USING THE "WALKIE TALKIE" STYLE CELL PHONE SYTEMS TO TRANSMIT WHAT EVERYONE REALLY WANTS TO HEAR ANYWAY......

Hello, I would like to hear the US Coast Guard helicopters when I am in the Outer Banks. I am using this to replace the 2052 because of this scanner's feature of alpha-numeric tagging. The Skywarn is a good plus. And the Signal Stalker II is something I have to look into further before I comment on it. The only drawback is the rounding of even-frequencies with a zero (ex.151.120 becomes 151.115 WHY?!)

The first one I got the "pot" went dead so I had no sound and this happened within a week of buying it. I have a new one now and no problem. I also have a PRO-95 that I used mostly when I lived in Lincoln NE on the EDACS system there, the PRO-95 seems to receive 800mhz better but the 97 is awesome for milair and am transmissions, or VHF lo

First time scanner owner...I found the manual confusing at first but eventually it was an ease to figure out. The buttons are a bit small. The belt clip is a joke...don't bother with it. Overall the sound quality is good. I liked the pre-programmed channels. I was able to find a home charger from my old answering machine that was compatiable with the scanner. The rechargeable batteries option is nice. Worth the money.

You will have to have the programming software and cable to effectively program this radio. Oh, you can do it manually, but the Win97 and radio shack cable combination is much more effective. Once you do, it works great and it probably is the most sensitive receiver I have seen on a scanner in this price range. Highly recommend this scanner, it has not disappointed me in any way! Now my wife wants one!

I got this scanner for my birthday and have been totally impressed with this scanners audio clarity and ease of use. I read reviews here about how hard this scanner is to program, but found that to be untrue. I had no problem with the instructions and found it very easy to program. I had all my frequencies in and running in under an hour. I also wasn't sure before buying this scanner if I would like the stacked squelch/volume control, but have found it to be very easy to use. Overall, I am very impressed by the Pro 97 model and would highly reccommend to anyone thinking of buying one. I love mine...

I've been listening to scanners since the crytstal controlled ones, and the PRO-97 is definately the best one I ever had. I've had this now for about 3 weeks. I love all the features it has, could use a little more explaining on some of them, and the volume and squelch on the same nob is a bit of a hassle. I'm impressed with the clearity of the trunking system and I'm able to pick up very well on all of the distant stations. Scanning conventional and trucking at the same time is also a big plus. I'll give this scanner a 10 out of 10 and it's one I'll keep for a long long time. (even after I get Radio Shacks digital scanner).

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

The Pro97 is the finest GRE-produced analog trunking radio in my experience, exceeding both the 95 and venerable 92. Audio is quite good, display is fabulous. Good receiver; resistant to intermod and overloading. Use something like Don Starr's WIN 97 software for easiest setup. Also note this scanner will be adaptable to the new 800 MHz rebanding that may affect your area. Fine machine if you don't need APCO digital reception. Scanner veterans will appreciate the 97 and it's a radio with which the novice can grow.

I've owned this scanner for about 3 months and I'm thoroughly impressed, primarily with its capabilities and features given the cost of this unit. I think its also the little things that impress me, one being able to leave the backlight on. This is a feature that Id like to have on my other scanners. Not difficult to use, but enough cool features to keep me interested in it and learning more about it. Nice loud and clear audio as well. Only draw back is the stacked squelch/volume control, but not to hard to get used to.

I have owned a lot of Police/Fire/Ems scanners over the years. Since I moved into a trunked system city, I needed another scanner to receive the action. Was I surprised to find the Pro-97 was not only a great value but it worked flawlessly. So good was it, I returned and bought another one so I could have one in my car and one in the house. My wife caught the bug and now listens to the action while I'm at work. I would buy some computer programming software and the cable to make programming easier and reproduceable. If you have two of these, be sure you have the cloning cable - it keeps them in sync. Outstanding value from Radio Shack.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

Outstanding radio, especially when you consider the price. My only disappointment is the concentric volume and squelch controls; They interact. When you increase the volume, it has the tendency to increase the squelch level and vice-versa. I usually have to use two hands to change the volume; one to hold the squelch knob while the other rotates the volume control. Bought a PRO-2055 at the same time and it has the same problem. Win97 or some other database program is a must.

I have been scanning for 5 years now and I am very happy with this scanner, I bought it a little over 3 months ago. I like that it is cheap in price but is still a portable with 1000 channels. I really like the alpha tagging and that you can set PL and DPL. It also has continious band coverage so you will never miss the action. The backilight is nice. However if you have it continually on, it will drain the batteries quickly, however after a while it goes into power save mode and will light up only when stopping on an active frequency. My only complains are that it doesn't have the reception that a base would have. It also took me a while to program all the frequencies and alpha tagging. I would recomend buying the computer cable having programmed it all by hand. I also wish it had more than 1 priority channel but that is only a minimal inconvience. Overall I really like it and would buy it again.

I used the Win97 program available from StarrSoft to load frequencies of local officials. I don't have anything to compare it to but I have been very happy with the scanner. I consider this to be an excellent value. Rebanding will only affect some of the Motorola freqs and nothing else. I am still holding out hope that the manufacturer may offer a fix. Even if they do not it is still a good purchase. JMO

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

This scanner is outstanding. As far as I am concerned it has already paid itself off. Rebanding won't happen everywhere over night (don't panic if you already own this scanner). Where and when it does occur, there will still be plenty of other things to hear until you choose to upgrade. From this teacher's point of view, the PRO-97 allowed me to learn certain aspects of scanning I had yet to discover, if nothing else.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

The 97 Pro was difficult to master as a novice. However, putting in the time to embrace this new world of scanners has been worth every moment. I believe this would be the case with any unit. A baptism by fire as it were. Nonetheless, I am now thoroughly enjoying the ease of use and flexibility of this unit. Love that talk group lockout in the closed mode feature.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-97 1000-Channel Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner:

Got it for Christmas. Has tons of features. Programming with Win97 is a snap. Programming alone is difficult. Reception seems to be very good. Listening to state police on trunked system at the moment about 60 miles away. Seems to pick up higher bands better than anything. 400 and 800 seem to be great, 150's are ok, doesn't seem to pick up lower bands well at all, but not many people using them these days anyway. Will have severe limitation in the future as many agencies are going digital, but until they do,, this is the one for your money.

Received for Christmas. Looks like a superior unit for the price, but extremely dis-satisfied with manual/instructions, which unbelievably assume you know the terms they are using, I know NOTHING about banks, cdma, ctcss, dcs, etc, etc, etc. I was looking for a simple scanner with simple functions..too complicated. Manual shouldn't assume everyone knows the terms they use. May return for a baisc model if such a thing exists

This is a great a scanner. If you're thinking about gettingit, just do it. The orange backlit display is excellent for those of us with not so perfect vision. The only think I don't like about it is the volume and squelch buttons are on top of each other. I find myself turning the squelch sometimes when turning the volume up or down. I wouldn't say it's a real problem, but I hope in the next version, Radio Shack doesn't do this again. In my opinion, it's the only serious downfall of the scanner. JUST GET IT. you'll really like it.

Being a beginner, I got the hang of it pretty easy. For the price it's the only one I found for $150 that has 1000 channels, and is handheld, trunking whatever that means, presets, alpha, weather and more. It might take me a while to figure out the signal stalker 2, and how to use the different modes, but I won't ever have to buy another one ever again. A+ Great Scanner... (edited by moderator)

The manual leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you're a newbie like myself. I'm having to purchase a book to help me out with the features. The accessory kit that connects the scanner to your PC with included software is no longer available, which disappointed me. I'm sure once I learn to use it, I'll be happier with it, but the manual is no help to newbies.

This scammer is awesome, I especially like the fact that you can label you frequencies with text tagging, it makes it easer it find specific frequencies. If you like listening to 800MHz Trunked Systems I suggest that you up grade to the 800MHz antenna (20-283). I travel a lot between Los Angeles and Phoenix, and with the PC interface cable (20-289) it makes it easy to program my scanner without having to do it manually, I just plug it to my laptop and download the frequencies into the scanner and then Im ready to listen, it saves me a lot of time! This means more listening time.
