After the first 2055 display went out the dealer replaced it.That one worked for a month or so then that display went out.It was sent to Utah for repair and they replaced the display and realigned the unit.Shortly after receiving it back, it stopped receiving. Now they are marketing the 163 which seems to be the same scanner with a different model number and it has display problems. Thanks for all the help Radio Shack! You just lost a long time customer!I [...]and they said to send the information and they would help resolve my issues.I have never heard anything back from them.At least the display still works.Too bad Radio Shack refuses to acknowledge that this product is defective.Buyer beware.

I've had some problems with a few hand held scanners, such as the(pro-97).And now I'm not happy with the LCD screen going out on my Pro-2055. I have bought many scanners both mobil and bass since the early 1970 from Radio shack, and never had a problem with them tell the last few years now. Whats up guys, when you have this many LCD screens fail, take care of your costomers or loose them. I'm not sure what I will tell my friend at this point.

If your display is dead and you want to open the radio up, here is what to look for. remove the front display panel. Cut the 2 grounds. Remove the small 2 pin connector. Remove the 4 screws that hold the board in and gently pry the board up. Find the small flex cable that is just below the display. On the ends of this socket is 2 small tabs. Gently pull these up. this will release the flex cable. You can do 2 things, pull it out and re-insert it or pull it out and trim 1mm off the cable and put it back in. Push the 2 tabs back and put the radio back together. 9 times out of 10 this will fix your display.

I am an NYS EMT - this scanner is great if you don't need to monitor digital systems. In addition to monitoring Fire & EMS frequencies I enjoy pulling all kinds of stuff easily across the entire range of the unit. Reception is fantastic with even the dinky included antenna; I can't wait to upgrade to something nicer I can put up on the roof.

The folks claiming this thing is impossible to program are the same people who claim to be 'computer experts' but have machines loaded with spyware and their wife's name for their password. You know what I'm talking about, the kind of guy who still has a 28.8 external modem he refers to as 'the internet' but still dishes out advice like he has a clue.

Within 20 minutes of getting the scanner and programming cable home I had it loaded with tons of NYC frequencies, every bank filled including multiple trunked systems, everything alpha-tagged perfectly. I was in heaven, no more racking my brain trying to remember what the heck frequency 6 in bank 2 was. I'm somewhat tech-savvy, but by no means a guru. The bad reviews of this unit all come down to 95% of the population thinking that they're above average.

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I am completely satisfied with this product.
It is simple to program when understood. Clear
transmissions is a plus. Display has an on/off
function. Some scanners tend to partially cut
voice activation, but not this one. Extremely
important ! Very useful for residences/vehicles.

Items which concern me are:

No dc adapter available for use to insert directly
behind unit. Must use ac supplied adapter attached
to separate dc adapter.

Difficulty in scanning programmed frequencies (
example "461.000" tuning up/down arrows.

Overall, this is a highly sophisticated piece
of equipment which needs to get acquainted with.
Experienced users, such as myself, are familiar
with scanners and their common functions.

Explore, and have fun !!!

I spent over 20 years in the fire service and served as a career fire chief. I used many different radios every day of my professional life. I served on radio system advisory committees and I know what I'm talking about in regard to radios. I've used a [...] for many years with absolutely no problems. This thing is rediculously difficult to program. We purchased the scanner for my father-in-law for Christmas and I just spent the last 2.5 HRS trying to program 30 frequencies into 2 banks. I never could get the damned thing to scan the frequencies after I finally got it to accept the programming. If you're just looking for something for casual use for a non-technical person, avoid this product. There is no reason for this to be so difficult.

My fairly new Pro-2055 is useless after 5 weeks. It still looks brand new but shuts down within thirty minutes of operation. The display goes blank, stops scanning and starts making noise. Resetting it a few times restores the unit, but only for a short period of time. Otherwise, the scanner works okay. I found out at [@]that problems with the pro-2055 are widespread and have been known FOR AT LEAST SEVERAL YEARS. However I am surprised that [...]continues to sell this defective product. Even the units repaired by [...]are reported to fail again. I think that after 30 days[...]refuses to replace the unit, so my only chance is to get some toys for the childre, or a digital scanner. I just don't want another defective pro-2055.

Wonder if some of those that put this unit down are Unidenophiles (Have you tried to read one of their user manuals?)

I had purchased the pro433 a week before this, and it works fine. I went to the pro2055 because of text display, not worth the hassel with yhe controls.

Love the scanner, hate the fact that so many (Myself included) seem to got the version with display issues and RS has not put out any kind of voluntary recall allowing us to at least get them replaced or repaired. I cranked the contrast up and can barely make out the display and noticed that when the signal gets weak, the power starts to flicker.

I have had the scanner for 6-8 months now and it is by far the best I have ever owned. No display problems (yet), date code 09A06. Loads from PC much faster than my PRO-95 scanner, is a bit difficult to program if not using PC. The scanner seem to respond much quicker, if I put it side by side with my PRO-95, both monitoring the same frequency the PRO-2055 will always open up first. Love the CTCSS/DCS feature, cuts out a lot of the garbage I don't want.
The only (MINOR) complaint I have is with the volume control, it is very sensitive on low end and because the size of the know it is easy to bump the squelch when changing volume.
Love this scanner, can't wait for it to go on sale again so I can get one for my truck.

After having the scanner replaced by a dealer for the disappearing readout, it seemed to work fine. Now since it is out of warranty the readout goes dark or just stays orange. Of course it still receives but what good is that if you can't see what frequency you are on. In my opinion these scanners were junk from the beginning. I am finished with Radio Shack!

By DeliBaker G from Union, NJ on 4/22/2007

I bought this scanner as a gift and I specifically asked about the display problems mention here. I was assured that this store has had no issues with this model. After only 1 hour of use the display flickered and then failed completely. Let it cool down and display returned but only for a short while before failing again. Returned it without any problems, thank goodness. Heed the reviews here, stay away from this unit!

By Steven C from Morgantown, WV on 3/14/2007
Pros:
Easy to use, Good features

Well the design and features are great -plus comes with a great install kit. The programming with the cables is not cheap - since the cable is 30 dollars and then you have to go online and download the software for a price from 30 to 45 dollars. After Programming which was easy at that point. The reception was the worst reception in a scanner I have ever seen. I could not even receive a station 15 miles way on a base antenna on o 40 ft mast. Versus my old portable scanner - with the ducky antenna was picking up the same station with out any problems. I have packaged the item up so that it is new in the box and I am returning it for a full refund and I know the store employees are going to try and have me try another one ? this I would have to refuse on. Sorry, but this was the worst electronic equipment I purchased. Sorry guys at the Morgantown Store, not your fault!!!!!!!

By Brent S from Houston,TX on 2/28/2007
Pros:
Good features, Good reception, Good Value

I have only had this scanner for about a week but so far so good. Great features. Trunk tracks perfectly. Love the text tags. Have an external base antenna and an external mobile antenna. Works well with both. No problems. As long as the lcd does not go out this scanner is perfect. The only bad thing is that it is not digital.

By Rick T from Lowell, MA on 2/21/2007
Pros:
Easy to use, Good features, Good reception, Good Value

For all those comments about 2055 displays winking out, i've had mine for over two year and it works flawlessly. One big problem, though....it does suffer from intermod and overload from pagers and adjacent channel rejection is poor. But it is THE best value in scanners in a long while. The pending re-banding of the 800Mhz is an issue, if it ever happens, other than that it's a great radio!!!.

Radio Shack went to a lot ...
By Gary P from Joseph, OR on 2/16/2007
Pros:
Good features, Good reception

Radio Shack went to a lot of trouble to develop this scanner. It has great features but has two major problems that they refuse to acknowledge and are still selling this model. 1- Displays go out consistantly especially date code 09A05. 2- Bank ID (bottom line) goes out when the scanner locks on a programmed frequency. This product should not be on the market or at least they should recall all 09A05 date codes which are still being sold.

my second replacement ...
By Jase B from Antioch,Ca on 1/8/2007

my second replacement pro2055 scanner and the screen went out once again. atleast this one lasted 3 months before it decided to die. but seriously this is the absolute worst scanner ever to come out of radioshack. do not waste your time or money with this worthless garbage. unless you like throwing away money or taking a gamble on which day your screen will stop working. any bets? your extremely lucky if you get one that lasts more then three months. three pro 2055's later and the same problem. first one was swapped out for a new one. second one worked for a month when it happened and was taken in for service and worked for 2 weeks and same thing again after the repair. my 3rd replacement pro 2055, and 3 months after the manager did a swap for one with a date code of 03A06, and its happened again... since i cant get my money back i am stuck with this unuseable junk. do not buy this scanner. for every good story about this scanner there are 1000 bad ones. buy uniden even though the cost is sometimes 3 or 4 times the cost, they are 100 times better. my uniden scanner is nearly 20 years old it works just as good as the first day i bought it but its lack of channel coverage was one reason i bought the pro2055... and whoa do i regret that mistake... they dont let you give it zero stars otherwise i would have....

By Kevin C from Bangor, ME on 12/26/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good features, Good Value

I have had radio shack scanners since I was 9 and now hace the 2055 and 97. Love both of them but being in the boonies the reception is kinda bad but that is not the radio's fault. The Win97 software is a great way to program both the 97 and 2055 as they are identical. Looking to buy another for my car. I also have some ideas for upgrades/mods for future editions of this type radio.

Very pleased with this scanner. I have had it for over two years and have had no problems. It's much easier to program with available PC software. I use it to scan the FRS/GMRS frequencies as we use them often. I'm very pleased.

Same display problems. I've had the scanner for about 6 months, now the display has gone blank. Talked with local Radio Shack they said it would probably have to be sent off for repair. Will take it in tomorrow.

The display went blank in ...
By Thomas W from New Jersey on 10/29/2006

The display went blank in 4 days.Took it back to the store. They sent the scanner back to be be repaired . We went to the store to pick up the scanner, had them at the store plug in in to see if it was fixed and it still was not working, So they gave me a new one. Got that one home and that lasted two days and that one went blank also. Took it back they sent that one to be repaired, message from the repair shop they could not fix it. So they gave me another one, got that one home in about two minutes that one also went blank. Again I went back to the store to return it. Would stay away from this scanner.

By Mark C from Arlington, TX on 10/27/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good features, Good reception, Good Value

I have owned one of these units since May 06 and absolutely love it. Plus I have not experienced any problems with it. It performed great on a road trip to Colorado. Now it runs 24/7 in my shack hooked to a computer recording radio traffic. The LTR decode feature is great. The audio is crisp and clear and reception is on par with transmitters costing twice as much. Why is RS considering replacing this model with the PRO-433 which has less features (no alpha tags) and not nearly as good audio quality?

By Jonathan D from Saugerties, NY on 10/15/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good features, Good reception, Good Value

After reading all the reviews about display failures, I was sure to get a unit with a later date code. I have had no problems with the unit, and find it a great scanner to use. My only disappointment is that it cannot do a search for CTCSS/RT tones. They *CAN* be programmed in, but you need to know the codes in advance. I find it's also easier to use the WIN97 Windows software and Radio Shack cable to program the unit. All in all, a great unit for the price. I'm very satisfied.

Pros:

Radio Shack should STOP selling this unit. It is on all forums--display problems. Probably the PRO-433 made by Uniden will replace this unit however, it doesn't have CTCSS/DCS.

By Gary T from ohio on 10/5/2006
Pros:

This scanner would be a great scanner, however, the displays appear to fail quite often. Mine went out and it was sent for repair. When it was returned, it had not been repaired properly. It was gone for 3 weeks the first time and I am waiting for the repair center to fix it again. I would not consider buying another pro-2055.

My display is fine, but I have an earlier date code. Aside from that bug, this scanner is wonderful. You get amazing features and sensitivity for a small price. Highly recommended for a first scanner, or a valuable asset to a seasoned radio room.

I have had my 2055 mounted in my truck for 7 months now, and this has to be the best investment I have made. It has great reception and controls, but without the use of a computer, programming can be difficult.

Pros:

Well I thought it was a good scanner. Has text tags, great audio, the UHF air band, nice lighted display anf keys which can be dimmed or turned off. I thought it was a keeper but the display went blank after 31 days so I returned it. I did get my money back so the customer service was good. So I guess nice try but avoid this one. It seems to be a common problem

I have a Pro-2055 with a date code of 04A06. I've had this less than 2 months and the alphanumeric display just quit working on it this afternoon. Everything else works fine with the scanner. I see from other submissions that this is a common problem with this scanner. I should have went with my other choice. My other choice would have been a Uniden. I've had one of those for two years & haven't had any problems with it.
