I got this scanner a couple of years ago and found it very easy to use once I got the hang of it. I use it for the local racetrack and when I go to Loudon. Works great and was a very good deal. Unfortunately its alot cheaper than the[$] that I paid for it. Probably out of date by now but it works well enough for my purpose. Very good product.
IT IS A GOOD SCANNER BUT HARD TO FINE FOR ONLY [$]I HAVE HAD A LOT OF SCANNER AND THIS ONE IS THE BEST

This scanner is very goood! I've been using it since Christmas and it is great! I suggest purchasing this scanner if you enjoy listening to the local polie, fire, etc..
Good job Radio Shack!
Thanks,
Chase
this is a great scanner,i like it alot, when i bought it 2 years ago it was [@],now is selling [$]cheaper
The clearest signal I have ever had! Easy to use too!
this is a great little scanner that is now 20.00 cheaper than when i bought it 2 months ago. here are some tips. do not lock out any frequencys use the squelch to scan past static stations.
upgrade the antenna to the bigger one. NOT the 800mhz . i not found any frequencys in the 800s. i got a fair number of frequncys withthe stubby, but i got a lot more with the bigger antenna.
i programmed in alot of frequencys. but it was preloaded with most of them already, i use the signal stalker to find new ones.
study the manual.
This is a GREAT entry-level scanner for someone who does not need P-25 digital or trunking. The radio is very good quality with exceptional reception and rejection of interfence.Buy one if you can still find them at closeout prices of[$] bucks.---bob gallardo
This scanner is great for the price, eventhough it is now cheaper than when I purchased it. A standard set of batteries last between 8 and 10 hours. Programming this scanner is a little different than traditional scanners, but it also has a lot of features that are packed into a small case, very worth the time it takes to become familure with the programming. The signal tracker is a real nice feature, I have used it a few times and it works great. I have already recommended this scanner to several friends.
THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER HAD ... I HAD A UNIDEN SCANNER AND THIS ONE BLOWS THAT ONE OUT OF THE WATER .......
I use it to listen to so when we have calls I can go quicker.
Bought this to take to the 12 Hours of Sebring Race. I deleted the Nascar preprogrammed freqs. Long user manual is hard to understand, even after reading it several times. Could not easily add known freqs. I'm a first time user of a scanner so maybe this explains my troubles! I should have spent more for a regular scanner (my brother's scanner manual is two pages!)
My Husband is a fireman and I love to hear where he is going on his runs, with this I can hear the fireman talking in the trucks...
THE BEST SCANNER OUT THERE! NOTHING COMPARES TO ITS QUALITY AND SIGNAL STRENGTH!! RADIOSHACK IS THE BEST PLACE FOR ELECTRONICS [...]!! THANKS! JIM!
Very happy with this scanner outfit, very well worth the money.
Great SCANNER COMPACT SIZE , GREAT FREQ. RANGE
BATTERYS HOLD UP.(i use rechargeable)
It picks up local frequencies excellent
Programming takes a little getting used to, but once you figure it out, it's very easy to update NASCAR frequencies. Be sure to check current year frequencies of drivers. Unit was very easy to use at the track, and reception at Daytona was excellent. On sale, the package value cannot be beat. Using DuraCell batteries.
If you want to hear the local police action (or airplanes, or fire, etc) and they are NOT trunked, this thing works great for most of us. It sounds like a few people got faulty devices. Mine picks up towns over 10 miles from here no problem. Weather channel is loud and clear. Stealth Stalker (aka Close Call) is a very clever feature. Only negative is the crazy difficult non-intuitive programming. Once programmed, it is very easy to use. We love it.
A great scanner! Easy to program and operate, nice big display that is easy to read. Backlight for display and keypad is great for night use. Great reception in the city, I would rate it the same as my Pro 528. Better get yours soon, I was told they are discontinued...too bad.
I bought this VERY entry-level scanner so I could have some help getting leads for my photojournalism class, without breaking my wallet. I got what I paid for. Relatively easy to program (takes a few readings of the manual), nice backlight, nice small design. With the stock antenna, it won't get you very good range or quality. However, I bought a RadioShack 800mhz upgrade antenna and the reception is now pretty acceptable. Just program stuff for your area and you'll get acceptable range and quality.
this unit is small in size and easily fits in your shirt pocket. easy to program. im not a race fan so i deleted the race channels.the antenna could use improvment . i use this in my semi-truck with a outside antenna and the reception is fantastic. mounting wasnt a problem, used a suction cup cell phone holder. you cant get a better scanner [$] Don
Controls are overcomplicated with most simple entry functions requiring 2 or 3 keystrokes. User defined search is almost useless. With the factory antenna attached, RECEPTION WAS UNACCEPTABLE, with the unit unable to tune the local NOAA broadcast. Connection to a moderate indoor/outdoor antenna ("Snoop Daddy" from Slinky Antennas) brought reception up to a mediocre level. This model may be ok for race scanning, where transmitters are close and in the line of sight, but it is definitely not suited for general or professional scanning.
i dont know why everyone thinks this scanner is so bad i pick up police and fire departments up to 2-3 counties away and its clear

I am pleased with this scanner but there is one problem I found with it. When you use it for scanning CB frequencies and turn on the backlight it can sometimes lock up on some channels.[...]

This is a Real good Scanner for Railfanning . I wish it had a better antenna . But other then that It's a great Scanner . Would buy it again .
Well I use this product for personal usage. The sound could be better. I use the scanner for emergencies and to keep up to date with the cops and medical personal. I did program the 800 freq. in my scanner and I can hear the medical tone accross it. How ever after that it sounds like static. It drains the batteries like crazy I have tried recharchable and alkinline. I also got to to also hear CB Radios. I can't even hear any CB Radio traffic. I even went out and bought a new antenna that didn't even increase the reseption. The battery cover seems to be pretty loose. DO not buy the center-loaded antenna (part # 20-006) it is a waste of money it don't even increase your respetion. I don'really have to much good to say about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those of you that like Uniden better. This is
a Uniden product. Just like Radioshack telephones.
We bought 6 of these at the NASCAR race in Las Vegas this spring and every one of us loved them. There were a couple that did not have the drivers frequencies on the corresponding channel with their car numbers but once we got that done no problems at all. I also dropped mine more times then I could count and didn't even get a scratch.
this unit is not for nascar once you delete nascar numbers u cannot get them back on there they use 7 numbers and the scanner allows only 6 numbers so whats wrong here
Should only take 2 steps to program one frequency not 5. Does not come with any power adapters, car or home. Uniden Bearcat better quality. Returned [...] within the hour.
i am on the fire department, and i use this to listen to the deparmtments around us, to get a heads up on what is happening aorund me. it is great and so useful.
Very, very difficult to operate. Way too many complex instructions. Not a good choice for using at local tracks, maybe NASCAR, but nothing else. Took it back
this is a very easy scanner.its great for people that is just startin.really easy to use, easy to programe.its the perfect scanner for me and anybody else.i dont use it for nascar but im sure it would work good.
HI THIS IS A GOOD SCANNER TO HAVE IN YOUR HOME OR TO TAKE OUT SIDE NEVER MISS A THING...............

Set channels for local airport tower frequencies (116-127 mc) but could not scan the assigned channels in selected band. Also will not exclude unwanted bands during scanning. Frequencies are there with assigned channel numbers when stepping through manually, but frequencies are skipped in auto scan. [...].

Was a great scanner and could hear the drivers and announcers fine. Loved that it had pre programmed channels for the NASCAR drivers. Great value for the money, plus it came with headphones. I am a first time scanner user and loved it.
This was a terrible scanner...all i could pick up was a couple of red necks talking on a CB about there kids.......DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER!!! its absolutly terrible...
Mine is programmed with AAR (railroad) channels and has a scan band set to search RR frequencies. Works well and is improved by adding a Diamond RH77CA or a Smiley 160mhz-tuned antenna. Using AA -sized NiMH rechargeables is a definite plus. Compact size is convenient. Got mine on sale w/ rebate.
I bought this scanner to use at the races. It works very well.I was sold on it due to the ability to program it from my PC. The first software I tried was Scancat it was a total failure. The next was Butel ARC-83 . The Arc-83 is dedicated software for this scanner(pro-83 and pro-84) only and works perfectly. It also works on Windows Vista(Scancat does'nt) and all upgrades are free(Scancat's are not) The only catch is you need to use the serial interface cord(radio shack part no.20-289) since the usb interface cable is not supported.
Good scanner but hard to learn for first time user...
I 'downgraded', if you will, from a Pro-90 which was no longer holding its charge, to this little marvel of sorts. Lightweight yet powerful enough to recieve faraway signals, I've yet to be disappointed at its ease-of use, rigidity, and convenience of carrying. After all, a sleek scanner like the pro-90, even with its features like trunk tracking and 300 channels, would get in my way. A great buy, though I'm perhaps not a big fan of the colour.
This is a great "no-frills," easy to use scanner. It is a great deal when on sale. It is compact, yet rugged. I use mine as a back-up or when I need a small / covert scanner.
I wanted an inexpensive receiver for the local air fields. The reception turned out to be a disappointment but the receiver is decent if you use a better antenna. Instructions could be simpler. The headphones make it a better value, since the speaker is minimal.
Very good rural scanner. Picks up mobile repeaters from 30 miles away.
Very nice compact scanner. Reception is excellent, sound is loud and clear, lighted keypad is great. I purchased the BuTel ARC83 (very nice) Sofware and the RS serial interface cable and can program the frequencies, very easy and quick.
I have given this device a 3 total rating. It's great for nascar. But not a very good general scanner. I would not recommed it use for anything else. It looses signal due to this short antenna.
A great scanner in every way. Sensitivity with the short antenna is incredible.
We bought them for ourselves, then got a pair for our son and his wife, then my parents decided they liked them, so we replaced their scanners that we bought 16 years ago. Reception is awesome, easy to use for anyone. We use them at Bristol and my parents use them at Chicagoland. The only concern I have is the headphones are great for women, but they don't fit the guys very well. Earcovers don't slide far enough to cover the whole ear. But other than that they are awesome!!!
This scanner is very good for the price and simple ease of use for the first time user. I bought two of them for my Dad and Brother to take to New Hampshire. The only thing i didnt like is that unlike the pro99 that i have which is also good. Is that it dosnt display the name of the driver so make sure u either know the numbers of the car or right them down before u go.
This is just a great scanner compact, GREAT reception all the features are a tad confusing buts that why we have directions... GREAT SCANNER I would recommend it to anybody!
This scanner is MUCH better than scanners you can buy at the track costing a lot more. I just used it this past weekend at Pocono and it was great! One tip, update the pre programed channels. Some of them have changed.
I bought the PRO-84 set for the Coca-Cola 600 5-28-06. This was the first race that I had been to and was not sure what to get in a scanner. I borrowed a Uniden scanner from a friend who has been going for years. The PRO-84 was way easier to use and had all the drivers pre-programmed in so it was super easy to just listen and go. After just a few laps, I put the Uniden away because I couldn't figure out how to program channels. The only thing that I didn't like was that the headset wasn't that comfortable and let in more noise than the racing electronics ones. I would recommend this scanner to anyone. Just make shure you get the stubby antenna so you don't get alot of overlap on the channels.
Unfortunately I had high hopes for this radio, but at full volume, I was just able to make out any conversation, and forget about it when the cars were nearby. The volume was just way too low for my needs, and I tried 2 sets of new batteries, 3 different headsets and 2 other people and we all came to the same conclusion. I wound up returning mine. Too Bad, I liked the size and features.
I bought this scanner to use at the Phoenix race. I loved it. It is compact, and has good reception. It definitely took some patience to get comfortable with the features. Make sure you read the directions BEFORE you get to the track and get an updated list of driver freqs. I didn't have any problem with the long antenna but I am planning to buy a "stubby" just in case.
I bought this before heading to the Vegas race (3/12/06). Worked great. The programming took a bit to figure out. But, if you have the easy to understand instructions with you, you should have no problem. I do recommend purchasing the short range antenna so you have it before the race. That way, you won't hear all the law enforcement activity and taxicab transactions on the radio.
I have been going to NASCAR races since 2003. I have spent a lot of $ scanners renting at the races. This time I decided to buy two (2) one (1)for me one (1) for the wife. (Radio Shack had a great sale in Early Feb) Spent only $50 more than renting them at the race. The wife and I then went to Daytona. They are "EXCELLENT". My Nephew said I was wasting my money, I knew I was smarter than he is.
I purchased this scanner to take to the track and listen at home. This has been a wonderful scanner that is very portable and has great reception.
Great package deal. It worked like a charm at Daytona. 95% of the pre-programmed drivers channels were correct, I just had to change the drivers that switched teams over the winter. Like any scanner, programming can be a challenge until you figure it out. Take some time and get familiar with it at home and bring the instructions with you. Headphone were comfortable and kept out the track noise so you can hear everything clearly. It's a great deal and a steal at the sale price.
I am glad I purchased the Pro 84. Great sale price. The scanner alone is worth the price. A+ to Radio Shack.Actually I bought two.
A great scanner for the price.
Better than uniden
