This is my 4th scanner that I have bought from Radio Shack. "Awesome unit" The programming was done for me at no extra charge. The guys were very friendly and knowledgeable. Figured out how to program unit myself once home which took a while, was used to the older method of programming..

we'd love to have this scanner but it isn't digital so we can't hear police traffic on it.. Perhaps that's why it's so cheap...digital is [$]The 2096 is the same as this one, but ours is digital.. and the display is gone.. hence it's in Radio Shacks shop, some where in Utah!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
wife bought this scanner for me 2 yrs ago,it was a PRO 2096... we paid a LOT more than the price shown,so we're upset about that!! We use it for fun/hobby.It's exciting to hear all the Police/ EMS/ Fire traffic.... Shortly after gettin it, the display disappeared,so we took it to the store to have it repaired. We got it back a month later with nothing being fixed. Two weeks ago,it totally died..NOTHING!We took it to the store again,it's now someplace in Utah! We're not made of money,so we may not get it back, depending on what's wrong....bottom line: we're not happy with the product, the company,or the price...I've been a scanner listener since 1980,and this is most trouble I've ever had with a scanner.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Basic programming is easy. Advanced programming and programming a trunked channel are a different matter. This is my first experience with programming a trunked channel into a scanner, and it hasn't been a good one. I also bought the computer cable and software from Starrsoft. Basic programming with the computer was much easier than manual programming on the scanner. For manual programming, the owners manual skips around too much which makes it really hard to follow programming instructions. Overall, this seems to be a very good radio, but probably not for a beginning scanner enthusiast.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Im sure it would be a bit difficult to program with just using the keyboard on the radio itself. but with the scancat program, this radio is extremely easy to program and to make changes as needed.

This is a professional radio. Programming might be be issue for someone just starting out with scanners.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
The one thing I don't like is the volume and squelch control being together.. You turn one and you might turn them both, or they do when the radio is new.. Programming the frequencies is easy with a computer program, therein is why a very beginner should maybe look to a lesser radio.. This scanner is my fifth since the very beginnings with a garage sale bought scanner in the '80's, and the progression to this "toy" was obvious.. I would recommend this to anyone who has been into scanning for a few years and understands the basics of the hobby. That and computers, you have to be able to upgrade any software that comes it's way and programming it (with text) is very important..

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
If you have never used a scanner, don't get this one. The manual is hard to understand because it jumps around with its' instructions. Even for just trouble shooting is hard. Although is has frequency jumping option, it cuts out one conversation to bring up another. You miss part of what you were listening to. Also, you hit a wrong button and you will be forever trying to figure it out.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
This Radio Is a good Radio, I know how to run though it, its just like the pro 97 that radio shack had.
Only minor flaw i see, is that if you don't know what your doing, then it will take time to get used to!
This Is a really good analog scanner, and i would recommend it to a friend, but work with them on how to program, takes some getting used to if you have not worked with a pro-97 type scanner!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
This is a really good deal. The price was good and once you figure it out it will work for you. I am a FireFighter in Texas and we cover a lot of different jurisdictions. The scanner is a invaluable resourse when it come to recieving transmissions on other frequencies that we dont have in our radios. I have my scanner mounted in my personally owned vehicle,I bought Radioshack coax and a Bnc connector and used a regular CB radio antenna and I can pick up transmission from our weakest repeater 46 miles away and it transmits at 25 watts no other radio will pick it up.

I had purchased this scanner about 3 months ago. Itr had a date code of 06A08. I took it back because the buttons stuck together and there was some intermod. The one I just purchased yesterday has a date code of 04A09 and it is perfect. When you buy something like this, it is always best to get the latest date code as there have been a few software updates since this radio came out in 2007. You can see the up-dates on [...] links next to the instruction manuals.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I wrote a review on this scanner the other day but after using this for 3 days, I need to change my review so here it goes: I returned it yesterday. I am going to order the PRO-163[$] online as it is made by Uniden. A better manufacturer then GRE. The 20-163 has no alpha tagging which isn't a big deal. This scanner(PRO-163) got a lot of interference from my Optimum Cable Modem which is in the livingroom. I think the front-end is too sensitive. I also have the PRO-2018 which was $32.63(reg.price $99.95) at Radio Shack. Some stores still have them in stock as it has been discountinued for a over a year and it drops in price every week. Not a bad non-digital double conversion scanner without 800mhz. Best value out there and it was written up on radioreference.com too.The writer wrote,"If anyone else out there is perhaps thinking of a tabletop model for stationary scanning purposes, I really do recommend the Radio Shack PRO-2018. What it lacks in features,it seemingly more then makes up for pure reception and sound quality. In fact, I recommend anyone to buy this radio regardless of the situation. Odds are this thing will do a better job of scanning local police/fire then your $300.00 multi-trunking GPS enabled super box".

When and if you buy this scanner. You better have a lot of back ground programing.. This one is very hard to figure out. Not user friendly at all.. When I ordered this scanner. The sales person told me it was easy to operate. It was not.. I think I got in over my Head on this one.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
As a active emergency services volunteer and amateur radio operator I rely on a good scanner to increase situational awareness. I've owned RS scanners since the 70's but this one has left me with a sour taste. The display constantly locked up and only a shipment to the repair center could correct it. With the original 1 year warranty and the extended warranty I felt covered. After 16 months and on it's 3rd trip back to the repair center the local store said my warranty was no longer valid and wanted to charge me $120 to get it back. I left it there and purchased another brand. The size and performance otherwise was satisfactory. Not the best, but worth the[$] I paid for it.
Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
This radio is pretty good compaired to the model it replaced. The display should be larger and the volume and squelch shouldn't be together.[...] The PRO-160 is made by Uniden and has no alpha tags and the new 700Mhz. This was well worth my while. I will see how it works with the antenna provided as I can't put an outdoor antenna up in a rental building. I know a scanner magnetic mount would work better by my window. I may purchase one becuase I am surround by hills here.
Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I bought for my husbands b-day, he had been asking for one and it was very disappointing. easy to program once you got going but I still cannot get most of the local stations. the sales rep at the store was no help either, maybe if I had gotten someone different. would not have bought this model had I known.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I am in training with the local sheriff's department and wanted to listen to comms to get smarter on signals and 10 codes. I found it was also useful during a severe thunderstorm when the tornado sirens went off. I took it to the basement with my family and could hear reports from spotters first hand. Tuning is not as difficult as it is time consuming. I'm still trying to figure out how to block out school buses, highway department and janitors from the county communications. My county uses an EADACS system and it seems that all of the frequencies are shared. It is probably in the manual, but I'm not a communications expert so some of it is a little fuzzy to me. Regardless, this radio is a good value.

Not a plug and play. Uses jargon we never have heard of, and can't understand. Should have a button for each service that scans all those frequencies. Nothing to associate the programmed frequencies with what service, or area of town.

I recently bought a PRO-163 in addition to my PRO-160 and I honestly hate it. I returned it and got an additional 160. The 163 has a horrible backlight, the squelch knob is hard to use, the pause button is hard to press, all of the buttons are too close together. Even the speaker sounds worse compared to the 160. Do yourself a favor and save the money and buy the newer model, the PRO-160.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I'm so glad that I found this scanner, I liked it so good that I bought the desktop unit and a handheld unit as well. The only thing that I can say negative about it is that it's a little difficult and time consuming to program either one. But the directions that are included are very simple to understand and follow. It is an excellent unit and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good scanner.
Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
THIS SCANNER IS NOT TOO BAD. THE ITEM COULD USE AN UPGRADE AS I RECIEVE POOR SIGNALS IN AN SLIGHTLY URBAN SETTING. THE SCANNER IS IDENTICAL TO THE PRO-97 WHICH MAKES IT EASIER TO PROGRAM. OVER ALL I GIVE THIS ITEM AN 8 OUT OF TEN. BETTER BUY IT WHEN IT'S ON SALE THO.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Had this 2 weeks now, was expecting much more on range, the low band range is poor at least for me here in NYC. Picking up Nassau and Westchester County fire freqs on lowband is virtually impossible, even with an antenna out the window. Coverage on all bands on signals in suburban areas is lousy. My Uniden 780 picks up all low band clearly and has good range from Suffolk to Morris County and from Rockland to Middlesex Counties. I'll stick with Uniden.

This scanner caan get me over 100 miles in an urban environment, woodsy area, and ocean line. However, you must have a colledge dregree to operate it. Without the software, it will take your years to program. No preprogrammed frequencies make it a pain to use. Only good thing is the reception and range.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
This scanner was purchased as a back up unit, mainly due to curiosity on my part. I have always been and will remain a Uniden customer. I had heard very good things about this radio so I decided to pick one up during a very rare event. [$] Now then, the radio is a pretty solid performer. I did a test on the 25-50-136-170,, 440-470 and the 800 bands. Reception was pretty good all around. The one area where this radio is not at its best is in the civil/milair bands. Otherwise, the radio will perform pretty much in line with todays' mid level priced scanners. The only thing I HATE about this radio is the tiny display. I wish Radio Shack would change that. Otherwise, if you can deal with that, this radio will satisfy the needs of most analog scannists'. I would not pay normal price for it though, wait for a sale.

Over all its the best one I've had. Great buy !!!
Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I bought this scanner back in July, it performed very well for a long time. I was picking up signals 20 miles away and getting very little intermod. I just sent it off for repairs as the squelch and volume messed up on me. I went from hearing signal calls at 20 miles away to only being able to hear 2 miles away, and picking up interference from TV stations. Overall a good scanner but its not a Uniden.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
I own 5 scanners and just bought the 163. Good radio over-all. Down side is small screen, hard to program if your have not done a trunking scanner before, lighting on front panel is uneven.Bought it becouse you can text tag all channels, A biggie for me, I also own a pro 433 which is in sale if you can find them for 119.00 I M O the 433 is a much better radio, display is huge seperare controls for squelch and volome, and reception out of the box is better than 163 I run both base units 24-7 and 3 handhelds when I am mobile. Pro 164 97 and a pro 25 my go to radio that NEVER fails. 163 is a good radio but 433 if you can referance 5 digit # to transmitting source in the trunking mode is a better value for your money. all Radios receive much better with a external antenna 163 and 433 will pull N H P for 100 miles out, simplex channels running a hy-gain 15 feet up on mast. FIND OUT WHAT YOUR CITY OR TOWN RUNS BEFORE YOU BUY A SCANNER IF THERE ARE MOSTLY ANALOG OR DIGITAL SYSTEMS OR YOU WILL BE VERY MAD BEING YOU CAN'T HERE ANYTHING.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Good scanner,The bad is that you get x-amount of channels per bank and if you program all the channels so you can name them it leaves you with fewer lockout spaces to lock out unwanted signals. It stinks because I can only have it on search and save the channels for lockout purposes only meaning I cant name my channels

After further usage, this scanner receiver is more and more impressive,,i've had the pro-2055 model in the past which this scanner replaced, and it was a great radio, i think the pro-163 is even better all around, the receive is great on it, much better also than a uniden bct-15 i had in the past year. Comes with a much better quality stock telescopic antenna than the unidens and works quite well. Many new added features, solid build, make this one of the best analog trunking base/mobile scanner's on the market IMO.

If you're a casual user or new to scanning you don't need a $200 scanner. The Pro-433 has all the important features and costs barely over [$] when not on sale. Buy that instead. I promise you will not miss the added features of this scanner. If you don't need a base scanner like this, or don't know what form factor you want, get a handheld like the Pro-528, it should prove to be much more convenient and versatile. This scanner isn't a bad scanner by any means. I just feel that the extra features you're paying for aren't worth the extra cost over a 433. If I had to do it again I'd probably have gone with the Pro-162. Similar to the 528, but divides the channels up into 20 banks with 50 channels each. Smaller banks make it much easier to organize and focus on what you want to scan.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Over all a pretty good scanner for the price. The display is a bit small but most scanners now days are getting smaller anyway. It is very clear though and great back lighting. I like the alpha tags that you can add to the freq. and the signal strength meter is a nice addition to it. It is easy to program if you take the time to read the instructions. The buttons are small but actually big enough for somebody with big hands like me to program it easily. It would most likely be easier to program with a computer and scan-cat lite software but it was not a deal breaker for me. It scans and searches at a pretty good speed compared to what older Radio Shack scanners have over the years. I have owned many scanners over the years including Bearcat and Radio Shack. This one ranks pretty high especially for such a low price.

Decent radio, however it comes out of the box with Firmware issues. Can't program LTR through the keypad. Trunking will stop and disappear after some time of operation. I recomend a Pro-97 over this or the Pro-164.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner:
Good Scanner, easy set up and crystal clear, but I have had to return 3 times for the display going out. The last time it worked a total of 5 seconds. I would not recommend this scanner, what a pain.
