Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Thanks everyone for the tips on this forum. I went out and bought the DTT901 as was suggested and hooked it up. It was affordable and easy to install, but the product still doesn't work great for me. I am using it with a pair of amplified bunny ears and have moved them all around trying to get a good signal. Only a couple of mainstream channels like FOX come in very clearly (better than before I installed the converter) but most channels come in pixilated or distorted (digitized?). I get all channels only when I turn off the converter box and go back to watching TV with the antenna. I also can't figure out how to turn the TV on/off with the converter remote. Does anyone have any tips for me? Thanks much!
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I was asked by elderly neighbors to set this up for them. TV had the necessary audio/video jacks, so the biggest hassle was getting all the wires hidden behind the cabinet to satisfy the lady of the house. Menu setup was clear. I was able to show the couple the buttons they'd use most of the time on the remote. They were impressed with the quality of the picture, so I know it works!

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Be advised the DTT900 is the old model. The audio on the DTT900 unit is flat; really disappointing. LG rushed the product to market to fill the demand before it was ready. The new model DTT901, which was released only months after, has Dolby Digital 2ch Downmix, which is said to improve TV audio significantly. Great picture quality negated by poor audio does not make the DTT900 the model of choice. Most likely Radio Shack probably will have the DTT901 soon if not already. Thumbs down on the DTT900. Wait for the DTT901. Also the TV Guide leaves much to be desired, limited use.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have had this box for about 3 months now with no problems. I think this box does its job very well and I am much happier with the digital signal it delivers than the old analog. However, it has a few idiosyncrasies that it helps to know. Here are a few troubleshooting tips to respond to some of the previous reviews. 1. Turn the volume on the TV up to 90% or higher. Then use the converter box to adjust the volume up or down. If you do this, you can still get stereo audio without it sounding far away. 2. To record to VCR, here is what I have found: When I set up the VCR to record, instead of selecting the channel, I select Line 1, which is the input for the converter box (I run the Antenna to the box to the VCR to the TV to stereo speakers). You have to set the converter box to the channel you want to record. Then make sure the volume on the converter box is turned up to 90% or more, otherwise your audio on the recording will end up very soft. You can still use the timer on the VCR, but make sure the converter box is preset with the channel and volume as described above (and that the timed-off feature on the box is disabled.) Note: You cannot watch one channel and record another. If you want to do that, you will probably have to purchase a new DVD/VCR that has a built-in digital tuner. 3. This box does an excellent job locking in the signal. If you do get any distortion or "no signal", press the signal button on the remote and it will show you the strength of the signal. Adjust your antenna until the signal strength increases. I have found that I can get almost every channel with a certain placement, but that there are 1 or 2 channels where I need to move the antenna. I just use an old set of amplified rabbit ears.3. It does not offer Picture in a Picture, so I'm not sure why someone expected that.4. For best audio and visual quality, use the included RCA cables, rather than an old style coaxial cable. Other boxes do not include RCA cables.5. If it shows a black square frame around the picture, press the zoom button on the remote and select an alternative "view".This box is intended to be a cheap way for people to continue receiving broadcast television. It offers a much better quality TV experience than the old analog way. I think it is worth [$]. If you want more than this box offers, you will have to pay more. I haven't tested other boxes, so I can't say for sure, but I doubt that you will get more from the other options in this price range.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is a great box. The only thing i do not like about it is that the remote controls the tv power but not the volume. I have had two of these boxes for over 3 months and have had no problems with them.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
My dad got this one and the 901, the one with the analog pass through. And their both pretty decent. however, like all the converter boxes, the setup is a little long, and this one is larger than some of the others.
I bought the digitalstream 9950. it also has analog pass through, but it really improved the audio more. plus it is much smaller. the only problem with the 9950 is that its remote doesn't turn all tv's on and off.
Bottom line, I would recommend this zenith converter box to a friend, but only if they couldn't get a hold of a digitalstream one.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
When the unit stoped working, Zenith said since it was more than 3 months old it would cost [$]to repair but the parts would be free. So they are saying, go buy a new one. I guess you get what you pay for so I am buying a higher price new unit. (NOT ZENITH) Will never by Zenith again.

I bought the 900 and the new 901 model. The 901 model has the analog pass through feature.I gave my mom the 900 model and at her house she gets 11 channels except NBC which the support guy said would come through in Feb.2009.My 901 model gives me 21 channels.I have a dvd/vcr hooked up but it wont record the digital picture channels only the analog picture.I need one more for another tv.These converter boxes sell out as soon as they hit the stores in my area.I recommend the DTT901 model.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The box brings in much clearer pictures but I may be forced to buy an antenna rotator to pull in stations whose towers are in different locations or with weaker signals. And we haven't figured out a way to record programs with our VCR using this box.
It appears we may be forced to buy at least one DTV and a DVD recorder/player to continue using an antenna - or be FORCED to buy cable or satellite.
This is NOT what I expected from my Zenith converter box!

"Push" On type RF cable junk! Causes intermittant connection .I replaced it with a "Threaded type"
No more problems. Runs warm .Do not cover vents.
If your T.V. has RCA "in" jacks ..use them for better sound. I connected it thru my VCR.
You can turn T.V on/off from remote.
Use "Signal" function on remote to aim antenna for best picture.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have had this product about 2 months. I definitely does what is says it is supposed to. I have used it on two different TV's. As I suspected, we get better reception and more channels on the TV with the boosted antenna which matched our experiences with analog signals. My best guess is that if you only get few channels or they are choppy, it is your antenna and not the converter box.
Important features: Zoom button on remote is real handy as it seems like each show is broadcast in a different format, and programing list for next two programs.
Downfalls: Sound comes through very poorly. I have to turn the TV volume way up to hear decent audio. It helped to turn the audio signal on the converter box to mono from stereo, but it is still a hassle. Some of this is because the different stations are broadcast with different sound levels.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought two of these [...] The Box looks great and works great. It was Very Quick and Easy to install. Remote works great and the change of channels is quickly responsive. You can hook it up with either The RF cable or Composite cables it comes with. A Quick note also... The sound is better if you change the audio option to Mono rather than Stereo. All in All I am very happy with the choice I made in purchasing a converter box.

I wouldn't waste my money on it. When the signal comes in it IS good but over half of the time the signal isn't good. I don't know if it is the box or what but this HD is not as good as they say it is.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I purchased two different brand name digital converter boxes. The un-named converter works great also sold by Radio Shack. The Zenith volume is very bad. Someone should notify Zenith and ask for a recall on these boxes until they can get it right or at least have a trade-in program for a converter box that works. I will to to email Zenith with this problem. Some else try also.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have had a large digital HD TV for 2 years using an antennae located in my attic. I live 10 mi. N of Boston. I get very good reception most of the times but some breakup on bad weather days. I bought the 9900DTX for an old analog TV located over my treadmill. I connected it to a pair of rabbit ears located on top of the set. The reception and image quality are FANTASTIC! I get 2.1, 2.2, 4.1, 5.1, 7.1, 7.2, 25.1, 38.1, 44.1, 44.2, 44.3, 44.4, 56.1, 66.1 and a few others! I bought the radio shack $16 antennae especially for DTV but never bothered to connect it as the reception is so great. For $20 (after coupon) this is a no brainer.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Had this unit hooked up to one TV and had the DTX9900 right next to it with the same antenna split to the two. Picture was identical, they did the samething, showed same picture, both cut out at the same time when it had poor reception. The only advantage this Zenith has is that it comes with composite video cables to hook it up to the television instead of a coax so thats why the picture looks better (Coax = 280 lines of resolution, Composite = 380 lines of resolution).
The reason they are so hard to find is because Zenith wants more money for these boxes than the other companies that make the converter boxes

Easy to set up. Great reception. Pulls in stations that were snowy in analog mode and makes them crystal clear. More powerful than the Digitalstream (I lost a channel with the DS, but got it back with Zenith). Radioshack should stock more of these.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The unit is easy to set up with on screen instructions. I was able to receive all the local channels in the metro Richmond, VA with only moderate "break up" of the picture. Most of the time, all stations are crystal clear, far superior to the old analog tuner. I am using a cheap, set top antenna. I would recommend a more elaborate hookup if you plan to use this as your primary tv source. Several people have complained about audio. I dialed it up to Full or 100%, then I didn't have any trouble using the tv volume control. It also lets you adjust the picture to either a 4:3 ratio (most older sets) or the 16:9 (widescreen) format which I have. I primarily bought this as a backup for when the cable goes out, and I'm glad I did.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Purchased the converter box today. It was easy to set up. The picture and sound are great! I get seven channels without it and eleven with it. However...I can't use the PIP (picture in picture) and can't record one station and watch another. It is a good product for what it does. I can only hope that in the future there will be a way to use the dvd to record!! Guess I can live without the PIP.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have a P.S. to my last review, if you do record from the VCR (instructions in last review) you have to make sure you turn the "sleep" feature off. Otherwise the Digital converter box will automatically shut off after 4 hours and then, when the VCR kicks in to record the show you programmed it to record, it will record a blue screen because no channel is broadcasting cause the converter box is off.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Here's the skinny on this converter:Pros:1) Great, great picture. Seems pretty good at locking onto and capturing weaker and/or problematic signals -- I live in an area with heavy multipath. this might be an issue for people like myself who are in apartments and heavy urban environments.2) Very easy setup. Less than two minutes easy!3) Simple, slim, nicely laid out remote.Cons:1) Lack of analog passthrough.2) The sound -- as noted in other reviews, there is a problem with the sound on this unit. The sound is very tinny, and on the stereo setting the sound is noticeably fainter than on the mono setting. (Yes, you could set it to Mono, but who wants Mono?) Also, there is a sound artifact -- as noted in previous reviews, when "S" is spoken, there is a chirping. Surprising that these units were allowed through production, considering this defect!3) I'm not sure about the previous reviewer who mentioned that it doesn't convert true HD signals. I'm watching PBS now, which I'm pretty sure is a true HD broadcast, and it seems to be working fine. Picture is fantastic.Overall, if I could do it again, I'd be tempted to try the Digital Stream, in order to see the differences... [...] My guess is that the Zenith and Digital Stream are probably about comparable, when you consider each of their relative strengths and weaknesses... these might matter to you if you are trying to decide between these two, and for example, you're a true audiophile and have a high-end audio system, or live in an area with hard-to-capture signals.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I got improved reception after connecting the box. I have a roof antenna which isn't so hot so I wasn't getting all the channels but after connecting this box, I picked up better reception on the weak channels and picked up a few more channels. For instance, ABC has 7-1 (which is the regular channel) then 7-2, and 7-3 which is a weather channel and maybe 7-4. Setup was relatively easy but it only gives instructions on how to set up to a TV. The Antenna set up, which views through either channel 3 or 4 (depending on which station does not have a broadcast) does not have as good of a picture or sound as the AV set up (AV wires). Also, I have a VCR and had to call tech to find out how to set the box through a VCR. I got 4 people who all had different answers, one being that you CAN'T do it and another being that you can't record using the VCR once you Do connect it to the VCR. Finally I got a guy who knew his stuff. He told me how to set it up as well as record using the VCR. But here's the problem which I am sure will be the same for all the Digital converter boxes. Since you can only view the Digital converter channels through your TV on either channel 3 or 4 (Antenna set up) or through your AV channel (AV cable set up) this means that, if you want to do timer recordings using your VCR, you will have to program the show you want to record to either channel 3 or 4 or to your AV channel since the channels on the converter box only view through these two channels on your TV. Then, have your converter box set to the channel you want to record, (ex: the show you want is tomorrow at 9pm on channel 7-1. Since there are no broadcasts coming though your TV on any other channels except channel 3 or the AV channel, if you program your VCR to pick up channel 7 at 9pm, it will just record a blue screen. So you must have channel 7.1 viewing through your TV on channel 3 or the AV channel and when 9pm comes tomorrow, the VCR will record what ever channel the box is tuned to.) May sound complicated but it meant a lot to me to find this out cause I do a lot of recording. Another thing, you can no longer view another channel while you are recording from your VCR. Bummer.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
For local city reception, it does do a decent job of dealing with multipath issues. This means that it will do a good job in your city and its immediate suburb. If you want good DX capablilty for reception greater than 30 miles (even with good outdoor antenna) this one should be passed up. There are better units for this purpose.

Ok , for all you so called tech savvy people. You cannot get surrond sound off an antenna with a non digital tv! The sound on this box is acceptable providing your are not a complete moron. You will not get surrond sound because it is impossible to do so since it does not have optical or digital coxial outputs. The only way to get true surrind sound is to get a digital cable box, sat receiver or a digital tv with the correct outputs. Sorry folks but running a pair of cheap RCA cables from the audio out of your analog tv isnt surround sound. The picture quality is good with a decent outdoor antenna and dont seem to have the issue with it locking up or hummiong the way the pieces of junk from [...] do.

Use this converter in our Motorhome with a standard batwing RV antenna. Was getting only 4 channels here at home, now get 22. from 90 miles away. Very easy to set up,almost does it all itself.Does seem to be very sensitive to antenna direction but this may be due to antenna design. Recommend for all owners of older motorhomes with analog TV.

Once I got both [$] coupons from the government, I had scoured the web on which set top box would fit my Panasonic PV-DM2799 27" TV/VCR/DVD Combo. I decided because I would by one box at a time, I'd try the Zenith DTT900. Consumer Reports rated it as slightly better in reception and resolution than the Insignia NS-DXA1, both which are manufactured by LG.Easy to setup, the Zenith includes the unit, remote control, RCA jacks, video and coaxial cables as well as a AAA battery. You can use a simple rabbit-ear antenna but can upgrade to a rooftop antenna if permissible. The on-screen menu guides you to setting up your channels, aspect ratio of wide screen or standard format, parental locks on programming and so on. I live in the 11373 area and can pick up 15 channels at this time of press. However, I could probably pick an additional ten if I modify or wait until the Feb 09 deadline. The bad side is I can't pick up WNET nor WLIW. Not yet anyway. The online program guide is very nice and has the time/date displayed along with SAP, caption and TV rating. The box itself is simple in design with a channel changer and power button. It's light indicator color changes from crimson red(off) to ion blue(on).Overall, I'm pleased so far but I'm certain once my last coupon expires, there's going to be a better model on the horizon.

The First RadioShack I went to, they told me they have never sold this product in their store and tried very hard to sell me the Digital Stream one - She didn't even know who made it. I went to another, the sales were much smarter than the previous one and told me they were out and found that another store nearby had some. I went to pick up one. The setup is very easy if you only hook that up directly to your TV. I get much more channels than before - even a local Chinese channel. Images are very clear and much stable. Audio is just like the other reviewers noticed - noise from the TV set and the converter. One thing I haven't figired that out is to hook up to my VCR with the TV and converter at the same time so that I can record programs. Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I purchased two of the Zenith DDT900 unit’s one for installation on our 6 year old 55 inch projection TV and one on my wife’s 9 year old CRT 19 inch set. Our project TV has the normal DVD and VCR’s currently connected in addition to a General Instruments DSR-922 4DTV “C” band 12 foot satellite system. We are currently utilizing a 64 elements Winguard roof antenna 35 feet above the ground with amplification. The entire installation for both sets required about 1 hour. Read the instructions and follow them to the letter. Both sets perform manifestly. We are of Seattle about 38 miles from the transmitters. The picture is greatly improved on channels 4, 5, 7 and 28. The sound is excellent via a Denon A/V unit through 36 JBL surround sound speakers. In addition we now receive 37 channels of digital where we only received 9 analog via the same antenna and equipment setup. I would highly recommend the Zenith DTT900 system purchased from Radio Shack. Even the remote was very easy to program to operate the TV. If I had any recommendation for changes it would be to install “Monster Cables” brand in place of the cheap ones furnished with the unit. This does improve both the sound and picture clarity dramatically.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Purchased this unit to use in our motorhome. Use it with the batwing antenna with power boast. Before, setting in my driveway I could only get 5 channels, now it will pick up 22,one from about 90 miles. Can`t wait to see what it will do when they all switch to digital. Setup is a breeze, almost does it all by itself. Would definatly recommend this converter.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It was very easy to set-up. The on-screen setup wizard only took about a minute or two. The picture is absolutely AMAZING. My only complaint is that the sounds is terribly hissy with annoying, audible artifacts in the high end. You might not notice it on cheepy TV speakers, but you definitely will not be happy if you have a nice home theater sound system!!!
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Bought two converts and had both set up in 5 mins. The new remote also controls the volume of the TV. I was also able to program the remote to turn the tv on/off, so I only need to use on remote.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The things that I was proud about this product was its design, user interface, easy setup, and improved picture and sounds. I like using this Zenith DTV converter box.
According to some people's review, they complained that there's a strange sound when watching a program. I only herd it a little bit. It's not loud enough that it bugs me. I don't even bother complain because its good enough.
I was able to only watch 10 analog channels with my Sony TV. However, when I scanned for digital channels, it drawed my attention that I had 22 digital channels. Digital is way better! You get more channels from the same broadcasters with digital, not in analog.
Yeah, I'd definitely recommend this product to all of my friends. Great work, Zenith!

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Installation and set-up were straightforward and simple. Results excellent; great picture quality.
My installation is slightly unusual. I already have a digital HD TV set. However, my VCR (of course) has no digital tuner, so I am using the DTT900 to feed the VCR. In Chicago, the PBS station 11.1 often does not show the same programming as their channel 11 or 11.2. I can now record those special programs to watch at my convenience (time shift), without waiting for the program to show up on 11 or 11.2 a week or so later.
For watching programs in real-time, I simply use the digital TV set, but I can send the signal from the DTT900 through to the TV for comparison. The DTT900 is an analog signal of course, not High Definition, but it has equally high quality as any of the direct analog programs. The Output from the box is being sent to the TV using the RCA Audio/Video cable, which should give better picture than using the RF Output ("F" Plug to Channel 3 or 4 on the TV).
I do have a fairly high quality roof antenna, so both the TV and the DTT900 have a strong signal to work with.
TIP - If your set-up will use a Splitter on the antenna cable, be careful to select the right splitter. There are splitters for Cable, Antenna, Satellite etc. Information on the packages is limited, confusing and sometimes outright wrong. Ask questions until you are fairly confident you are getting good answers. This is the cheapest component of the system, but it can have a profound effect.
My system uses only the roof antenna with a splitter dividing the signal between the TV set and the VCR/DTT900 combination. I am using the Radio Shack 15-1234 splitter with excellent results.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Some people have complained about the high pitch on left channel but I have not noticed it. I own a Sony WEGA from year 2000 and found that TV audio and video settings are the key to get the most out of the converter. Note that this TV tunner is not an antenna, you need to have an antenna located where it can pick signals. Keep in mind this is just a cheap-low-cost-plain digital to analog converter, not a HD receiver. Since I just wanted to continue to use my old Sony WEGA TV, this converter has been doing its job very well. For[...](including tax and after $40 coupon) this has been providing CD-quality picture. You may not be satisfied with this converter specifications, in turn, you can spend $130 or more in a better receiver... I own two digital receivers and am happy with their job for what I paid for them. I'm in The Colony, TX... yes, I call it a town not a city (blink and you'll miss it), what I mean? I little far from TV stations and converter was able to pick as many channels as my two HD TV's. Remote control features are just what I need and work perfect. It turn on and off the TV's.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Bought this digital TV converter to use with my 2 year old TV and rabbit ears. Depending on orientation, I can either get channels 7 and 24 or 11 and 56, but major networks (in L.A.) CBS2 and NBC4 are non-existent or unwatchable. Bought an amplified "HDTV" antenna and now I can't get 7 or 56 either (yes, reception got worse) however the antenna connected direct to my TV works okay for analog channels. I'm not at all impressed with digital TV at this point. No wonder the gov't had to mandate the change to get people off of analog TV.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is to follow-up an earlier review.
1) A call to LG tech support confirmed that
the DTT900 will NOT decode HD transmitted
signals. Only SD transmitted signals.
2) Compared to Magnavox: The DTT900 has MUCH
better sensitivity (MUCH better at receiving
weak/distant signals), and produces a
noticeably better image on the analog TV.
As much as I otherwise prefer the DTT900, the lack of HD decoding is for me a fatal flaw. I wish it were not the case.
I cannot recommend the DTT900 to anyone who wants to receive HD transmission.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
In my area, there are only three available: Magnavox, Zenith-made-by-LG, and one other "no-name". Reviews favored Zenith DTT900 - except for possible poor/distorted audio.
In my case, audio was quite good, and standard-definition (SD) digital signals were better than corresponding analog signals (a good antenna is needed, however).
I set the unit up using the RF output (output set to default Ch 3 for input to VCR tuner). The unit did not "see" digital channels 2.1 (SD),2.2(HD) and 2.3(SD), which are strongest in area. Using audio/video outputs, it saw these channels (curious) and added them to list of channels. Once added, they remained available, and were received, when returning to the RF input (more curious).
My main complaint is that it does NOT convert the one channel (Ch 2.2) thatis broadcast in true HD. The display image is broken, and it "stutters" timewise - is not useable. I had read in a review that unit converts HD to SD before the D/A conversion. This does not appear to be the case.
Unfortunately, HD Ch 2.2 is one that I watch regularly - and want the ability to record on my analog VCR via the D/A converter. The only saving consideration for me is that HD broadcast on Ch 2.2 are frequently simulcast on SD Ch 2.1 (the 2.x channels are public broadcast) - but this is not alway true.
My next step will be to try the Magnavox converter, to see if the issue is in the converter or the transmitted signal.
In summary, if the DTT900 works (which appears to be SD transmissions only), it appears to work very well. If one knows the limitations up front and can live with them, then I would recommend it.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The DTT900 provides excellent digital performance, even in a severe multi-path environment. Very fast channel scan and easy to add new channels.
The lack of an analog pass through is an advantage, for improved RF sensitivity.
The DTT900 is by far the best ATSC tuner I have used so far. With an outside antenna, the scan picks up about 50 digital channels. Even indoors, with a RadioShack double bow tie antenna, it picks up digital channels 40 miles distant. I have tested seven HDTV ATSC tuners (built-in, PCI and STB types), none of these tuners worked satisfactorily indoors. Only the DTT900 provided usable indoor results.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Bought one of these to try out to see how effective it would be and if it was the one we wanted. It was super simple to connect and the setup was a breeze. We live in a rural area, with an outside antenna, and ended up with several more channels than we had been getting. Only one channel that we got marginally before didn't come in better and it would have surprised us if it would have, since it is broadcast from quite a distance away. We do get more from the local PBS stations using this, and we are very happy about that!
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I live in the middle of Los Angeles, in the second floor of a 2-floor building with highrises less than a mile all around me. And all I have is a cheap (probable less than $5) indoor antenna that my brother used as a pretend sword when we were kids (twenty years ago). I now get 43 perfectly clear channels.
Things that I would advise: if you aren't getting some channels, move the box and antenna around while you have the Signal strength feature activated on a channel. I doubled my channels my messing with the placement of the antenna for about 10 minutes. And the volume function for the box seems a bit weak. It should be used with the tv's volume control.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Seemed easy to set up but it was unable to pull in a signal - kept getting "weak signal" message - went back to radio shack and purchased a [$]antenna - still got weak signal message. Called Digital Stream tech support - they told me I needed to use the remote to access the menu and tell the converter to "update" (basically, rescanning for channels - seems it was remembering the weak signal from the old antenna and does not automatically rescan for channels unless you program it to do so). Once this update was done - took only a minute or two - it works great. Very pleased.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I picked this unit from radio shack [...]I do not see any picture or audio improvement on my Sony TV. Unit did not pick up 2 PBS channels that are available digitally on air, and other channels tend to freeze every now and then. We live in NYC suburb and signal quality should be great. the regular roof antenna has better quality audio and video compare to this digital converter box. Great disappointment and this unit will go back. [$] So my suggestion is to read all reviews and pay attention to negative comments.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
My apartment in Detroit is in TV broadcast towers blind spot and the only two local channels I can receive (channels 4 & 7) are snowy at best. I have bought all imaginable indoor TV antennas from old fashioned rabbit ears to amplified Philips HD antenna but none could pull in any viewable channel and Cable is too expensive for my need as I only watch the early morning news. I read reviews of all available digital to analog converters before settling for the Zenith. What a surprise. Setup is a breeze and what kind of antenna do I have? Nothing fancy here: just the traditional Rrabit TV antenna for my bedroom (12 crystal HD quality channels) and a $10.00 Radioshack Rabit Ear antenna for my living room(15 crystal clear channels).
Yes, the remote controls the TV too if you can take the time to program it: Just hold down the "TV Power" button on the remote while pressing the channel button on the remote until the TV turns on or off. You must have gone through the initial setup which even a caveman can do. Depending on your TV screen some of of the images may not feel the entire screen. To resize just press the zoom button on the remote repeatedly to crop the image accordingly.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Some install and setup hints (I assume you also want to continue to get analog TV until it's cut off, or even after, if you get Canadian/Mexican channels or low-power analog):
1) Digital TV requires a better antenna than analog TV, or you can expect those fuzzy, but watchable, analog TV programs to become unwatchable due to frequent drop-outs with digital TV. This causes large blocks to appear, the picture and sound to freeze for a few seconds, and sometimes the screen will go blank.
2) If using "rabbit ears" or an "aerial" with separate outputs for UHF and VHF, you can send the UHF to the converter box and continue to send the VHF directly to the TV. This is because digital TV is only broadcast in the UHF range. This will allow you to still get analog TV, as well, since analog TV basically only needs a VHF antenna. (Analog UHF seems to come in on most TVs without an antenna.)
3) If you have two-lead output wires from your antenna, you will need to buy a connector to change from the two-lead antenna wires to coax, which this converter box expects as input. Techies like to refer to those by the obscure terms "75 ohm" and "300 ohm" antenna wires, and so call this device a "75 ohm to 300 ohm converter".
4) If your antenna only has one output, you may want to buy a device which splits a combined antenna signal into UHF (for the converter box), VHF (for the analog VHF channels), and sometimes FM radio.
5) Depending on the inputs your TV has you may need to do different things:
a) Only a single coax input: If you still want to get analog VHF, you will need to combine the digital output coax from the converter box with the VHF output from the antenna. This can be done either with a T-splitter, which links 3 coax cables together all the time, or an A-B box, which allows you to press button A or B to connect either cable A or B to the TV's input.
b) Two coax inputs: This is easier. Just plug the output coax from the converter box into one and the VHF output from the antenna into the other. On the TV, you will need to select which antenna input to use, depending if you are watching digital or analog TV at the time. If you are using the coax output from your converter box, your digital TV will come in on analog channel 3 or 4, which you can select from the converter box menu ("MENU" + "SETUP" + "Output Channel").
c) A coax input and RCA inputs (yellow, white, and red cables): This is the best situation. Use the RCA cables to connect the converter box to the TV, not the coax cable. You can still connect the VHF signal from your antenna to the coax TV input. Some TVs then allow you to select the input you want to use (via the remote), depending on if you want to watch analog or digital TV (the RCA inputs may be called "cable"). Other TVs, unfortunately, require you to go flip a switch on the TV or the TV automatically uses the RCA jacks if they are attached. You would then need to flip the switch or disconnect at least one of the RCA cables to watch analog VHF TV. Also note that the RCA jacks may already be taken up by a VCR, DVD player, or other device. In this case, you may want to go back to steps a and b and attach both the digital TV and analog VHF to the coax TV input, leaving the RCA jacks free for other devices.
6) The "FAV" button on the remote was a bit of a mystery to me, at first. You program it by picking "MENU" + "SETUP" + "Channel Edit" + ">" + "FAV" when on each desired channel in the pop-up list. Then, once you exit the MENU, the FAV button will flip forward through that subset of the channels. There doesn't appear to be any option to flip backward through the list, but you do get a list of all the FAV channels when you hit the button, and can scroll up and down through that list using the up and down arrows.
7) The "SAP" button never appears to work in my area to provide another language.
8) The "GUIDE" button has the odd behavior of only displaying program info for TV stations you've clicked through recently. Otherwise it says "Tune to channel for program information". It only lists the current and next program for each station.
9) The "ZOOM" button behaves differently depending if you have "Normal TV (4:3)" or "Wide TV (16:9)" selected under "MENU" + "OPTION" + "TV Aspect Ratio". Under Normal TV, the "ZOOM" button flips through the options "Set By Program", "Letter Box", "Cropped", and "Squeezed". Under Wide TV, it flips through options "Set By Program", "16:9", "4:3", and "Zoom". Unfortunately, if you have the converter box option set so that it doesn't match the aspect ratio for the current channel, it will just say "Aspect ratio cannot be changed on this channel", when you hit the "ZOOM" button. They really need to allow you to set the aspect ratio for each channel independently to solve this issue. "ZOOM" never allows 2X, 3X, or 4X magnification, as it does on many DVD players.
10) The "SLEEP" function is of limited use, since it only turns off the converter box, not the TV. This leaves the TV on with nothing but static, which can be louder than the previous program and wake you up. If your TV also has a sleep setting, make sure the TV goes off before the box to avoid this.
11) The digital closed captioning can be customized fully. You can change the size, font, text color, text opacity, background color, background opacity, edge type, and edge color under "MENU" + "OPTION" + "Caption" + "Digital Option". The "edge color" is apparently the color at the edge of each letter, not at the edge of the caption box. I found the most visible captions to be large, font 3, yellow text and yellow edge color, black background, depressed edge type, and solid text and background. You do occasionally get garbage captions, especially when you've just changed a channel or when it's dropping out, but it's usually right. (One funny example was the phrase "proxy war" being listed as an "epoxy war", inspiring visions of combatants spraying glue on each other.)
12) As noted by others, the volume controls only allow you to reduce the volume below the level set by the TV, not above. I've found that at the 100% setting the volume of digital TV matches the analog volume, but only if you have "Mono" selected under "MENU" + "OPTION" + "Audio Output". If you pick "Stereo", you can never get the volume as high under digital as it was in analog. It's quite annoying if the volume changes when toggling between analog and digital, so I suggest leaving the volume on the converter box set to 100%, setting the audio output to mono, and using your TV remote to control the volume.
13) The remote is laid-out well. It's not a universal remote but does allow you to reduce or mute the volume and allows you to turn on/off some TVs (but not all). It only has one AAA battery so it will likely need to be replaced often. I failed to notice the clear plastic wrap around the supplied battery when I first installed it in the remote, with predictable results. The controls on the base unit are minimal (on/off and channel up/down), so don't lose the remote. If you do lose it, note that you can use the remote from another unit until you find it. Only the "TV POWER" button won't work, unless it's reprogrammed for the new TV.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
After having read the product reviews, I decided to go with the DTT900. Am very happy I did! If it's in the air with any reasonable signal level, this baby will decode it! I live on the Jersey Shore, where all reception can be a challenge. A few channels are unreliable (WCAU, WHYY and WTXF from Philly to be exact) but this is due to the station's broadcast facilities, not the DTT900, which is very sensitive. I've pulled DTV from Bridgeport, CT and Long Island, NY!
One word of advice: if you are more than 35 miles or so from the transmitter, you really should use a rooftop antenna. An antenna mounted preamp wouldn't hurt, either. I have both, as well as a rotor. I'd get nothing with rabbit ears or any indoor antenna.
And, regrettably, the typical RadioShack employee these days knows little to nothing about antennae.
I believe they have discontinued much of their outdoor antenna line, which is a real shame. I'm using their VU-190 on my roof, and it's been up there for 11 years. Only one bent element (damned seagulls!).
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought 2 converters on 4/15 and installed them that night - they were easy to install and they found 23 channels from Salt Lake City. The picture and sound were great. The only thing that I don't like about the converter is the program guide - it only shows you the next program, nothing further than that. This is a great product for those who have basic TVs.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
With my attic mounted Radio Shack antenna connected to my Samsung 27" Flat Screen HD ready TV box I typically received 6 local channels but after connecting the converter I now receive 30 HD channels. Also connected to the TV are a DVD player and a VCR. Everything works great except when my wife uses the VCR timer feature to record General Hospital. The VCR works as it should when playing except for recording. I have tried installing the converter in several configurations (between the antenna wall jack and VCR and the VCR to TV etc). I’m running out of configurations to try. [...]

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is a followup to my post and a tip for some others who have complained about audio quality in stereo mode. Check that the volume on the actual TV set is turned up pretty high. The box adjusts volume but the TV volume level sets an upper limit. If the TV volume is too low, than the box will have poor audio sound. I stumbled across this and it helped A LOT! Maybe it will help you.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I live 60 miles east of LA and have been using an old TV with amplified rabbit ears and sound through a stereo setup. Setup is very straightforward and the box does the work. My first impression was WOW! Visual clarity was incredible--like we had cable. I agree with some of the posts that the output in stereo seems off. However, ran it through mono and it is fine. If you aren't going to be in a surround sound situation it probably won't matter. If you are, what are you doing with an old TV trying to get reception through a converter box anyway? Most people probably will not be disturbed by the audio shortcomings. Other than that, the box and remote are well thought out and include many helpful features including a button on the remote that changes the aspect ratio; an on-screen TV guide; and a graphic that indicates the strength of signal for when you want to adjust the antenna.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The DTT900's reception, video quality, and ease of use are excellent but the audio suffers from a widely reported defect involving a high-pitched "chirp" when the syllable "S" is spoken. Some channels are affected while others are not. However, if your sound system is lower end you may not notice it. This audio anomaly was so annoying I had to return it to the store. This is why I couldn't rate the unit more than one star despite its other excellent qualities. This Zenith DTT900 was an exchange for a Digital Stream DTX9900 I previously purchased at the store which had the exact same audio problem (both are manufactured by LG Electronics). [...]
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Easy to setup. I have now 46 channels using an inside indoor antenna. Nine channels (29-2 through
29-10) are radio stations one of them being from

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The otherwise thoughtfully featured Zenith suffers from a hissing raspy noise component added to its RCA audio outputs. I compared the Zenith to the spartan Magnavox digital converter [...] which does not exhibit this problem at all. For the record - I'm not fond of the Magnavox either. But it illustrates my point that given the same antenna signal it's possible to get both a good picture and good sound.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I went online to find reviews for all DTV converters and CNet rated this the best of the lot. Before installing this converter I could only get 1 PBS channel, 1 snowy ABC channel, & 1 really snowy Fox channel. I was using a roof mounted antenna that came with the house and it must of been there for at least 30 years before I ever moved in and started using it. Its basically just a rusted pole on top of my house. I decided to also get the amplified indoor VHF/UHF/HD/FM 15-1878 antenna as well. The converter is fool proof on setting up, it basically does the setting up by itself. After the initial set up I was amazed at the picture quality that I was getting. The picture was crisp and clean and I was pulling in 9 channels total, 3 PBS (1 in HD), 1 ABC (HD), 1 CW , 1 CBS (HD), 1 MY, & 2 Fox (1 in HD) only thing is no NBC due to licensing issues with local broadcasters but thats ok. Another cool feature is that you can check signal levels with the remote control, if the levels are low you could manually adjust the gain on the antenna or turn it until you get a stronger signal. I am extremely satisfied with this set up. On the downside, the audio can be a little on the low side if you just use the coax cable but if you use the rca audio out on the converter and connect it to a stereo receiver with the included audio cables, then this issue is clearly remedied.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Here's the skinny...This box (& ALL LIKE IT) work best when you have a rooftop antenna feeding it. Anything less, and your results diminish accordingly. Add aluminum siding to an indoor antenna, and you have the worst possible installation.
With analog, I received (9) stations...WNEP-16 (snowy), WYOU-22 (tad distorted), WBRE-28 (clear as a bell), WSWB-38 (VERY SNOWY), WLVT-39 (clear), WVIA-44 (snowy), WOLF-56 (tad snowy), WBPH-60 (clear), & WFMZ-69 (clear). Now with this box, I get (20) channels, ALL VERY CLEAR...multiples of the ones listed, plus WQMY-53, which is broadcast on WOLF-56's third digital channel. All but (1) are DVD-quality...the WSWB-38 occasionally pixilates, in a semi-minor way. Still much better than the snowy picture via analog.
I could not be happier with this box.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Within 10 minutes of opening the box, the Zenith DTV tuner was fully operational. Using only the rabbit-ears antenna that came with my TV, it is bringing-in channels on my 20 year old Sharp TV that I had never seen before. I was able to easily get the supplied remote to control power and volume of my TV set, a big plus, so I still only need to use one remote control for everything. Picture and audio quality are fine.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I picked up a box manufactured in March 2008 and connected it to a powered antenna and an RCA 27" stereo TV. The setup was quick and the tuner picked up all the local digital channels. The picture was good. The program guide is a useful feature.
The remote was flimsy. The audio volume was very low and had a marked distortion when the output was in 'stereo' mode. After switching to mono, the volume was higher and there was no distortion.
Do not buy this box if you want a good audio performance. I don't understand why LG had not found and fixed this problem yet.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I live ~8 miles north from downtown Chicago (well within city limits) 2nd floor, with a straight view of Sears Tower. The only con is the reception for channel 2 (CBS). The antenna has to be very close (~4 feet) to window to get it. If you have the TV in a meddle of a room, like I had, there was no reception or very poor for that channel. All others (about 30 Channels) where very good.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Only problem I have noticed so far is that the picture slants to the bottom left. I returned the first unit, thinking that there was problem with the unit. The second unit did the same. Maybe, I am the only one having this type of problem. If you can live with that, it works okay.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Fast set-up, attractive design, auto-tune picks up all DTV channels in the Los Angeles area's DMA on initial set-up. And there is a definite improvment on the video reception quality. It appears the days of suffering with marginal off the air ("OTA") analog TV channels, particularly in the UHF range ("snow channels"), are over with the era of DTV (thank goodness!). However, this unit does have a couple of annoyances with the audio. 1) The audio levels on the channels are quite low forcing you to scramble for your TV's remote to turn up the sound each time you switch on the converter. Which leads to the second problem with a feature design choice for this unit. 2) There is no ability to control the TV's sound from the converter's remote control. The volume up/down toggle button on it only controls the audio output line level from the converter itself, and not the TV. Which even set at maximum is wholly insufficient, and requires you to rely primarily on the TV's remote volume control. All else is fine with this product though.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I wanted to write a review because I read so many of these before deciding to purchase the box. I am very happy that I did. It's compact size surpised me. It took me about 10 mintues to hook up and search channels. I now have 12 channels where I had 6 before. I live in a rural area and I'm impressed with the signal. The monitor shows signal strength in red/yellow/green. Even when I don't have green I have a great picture. I have one more tv and I know I wlll buy another box. I'm very happy with the product.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I set up my converter box today. We have 7 year old rabbit ears and they work great with this box! We get all of our local stations plus a few more. We had very fuzzy reception on most of our channels before we purchased the Zenith. They are all clear now.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
There is noise when you use the RF Coaxial cable to hook this box up to the TV. This is present on two of the boxes I purchased.
You will need to buy a new universal remote control to operate this box and the TV. You can not adjust the TV Volume or Channels with the remote that is supplied. Older remotes do not have the codes for this new box.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I purchased the Digital Stream DTX9900 first from Radio Shack. I was going to get the Zenith based on reviews but all local RS were out of stock on the Zenith. I was able to pick up about the same number of channels/ subchannels as with analog alone. I lost some channels and gained other channels. I wound up with more PBS, a sometimes weak and sometimes failing CBS signal, ABC, NBC and Fox. All channels except the CBS signal were DVD quality. I use a 10 year old Radio Shack mobile home antenna that has an in-line 20db signal amplifier built in. It is mounted indoors on the second floor in the attic.
A week Later I purchased the Zenith DTT900. Based on reviews, I was expecting improved reception with the Zenith over the Digital Stream. I would say that the Zenith is about equal in ability to pull in stations. I live in an area with hills and valleys. All TV transmissions come from the same direction. CBS is the furthest or weekest powered signal. However, Digital Stream is able to pull in 2 CBS stations from time to time. So far, the Zenith has not been able to lock on the CBS stations.
Overall opinion of both Brands. I like the Digital stream better than the Zenith. Menus are easier to read (larger text) and have several hours of program listing. The DS remote is user friendly (shape and features). The Zenith remote features are OK but holding it feels clumbsy. It is long and narrow. The DS remote is about 1.5 times wider and has more weight to it than the Zenith. My biggest dissapointment about the Zenith is the sound qaulity. While both units have some *Hiss*, Sound distortion begins much sooner when using the Zenith. This isn't a problem on a larger set with 5 watts sound but a smaller set could barely be heard 12 feet away before the Zentih produced annoying *Hiss*. I would call the Zenith setup a bit clumsy too. The DS has a manual toggle switch to choose channel 3 or 4. The Zenith "fast" instructions say pick channel 3 or 4 implying that it auto-selects the output. Actualy, the Zenith default is Channel 3 output and, using a soft-set in the menu, may be changed to channel 4 output. I prefer the manual switch of the Digital Stream. It was much easier to select and know at a glance of the box, what channel your TV should be set to (3 or 4). Also, the Digital Stream remote recognised my TV automatically (coincidence?) and the Zenith had to be programmed (see instructions).
In hind site, I would pick the Digital Stream over Zenith. If I were able, I would further compare the Digital Stream to other brands in search of a unit that pulled in CBS reliably. If the choice was Zenith or nothing rather than the Digital Stream, then yes I would purchase the Zenith again.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Other than The sound which has to be put on Mono works great.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The unit is easy to set up, doesn't look too bad, and has a simple clean remote (I hate the Fisher-Price-looking ones).
But... audio reproduciton at high frequencies is awful. Symbol crashes or commentators pronouncing "s's" and "c's" sounds terrible. Based on web search results this is a problem with Zenith and Insignia box (both made by LG). This problem is noticeable when using the RCA outputs in stereo mode. The problem may not exist when in mono or when using the RF output.
Might be wise to wait a while before buying a converter box -- I would expect these problems to be fixed in the future.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
From many of these posts, it sounds like customers are expecting to view their analog channels along with the digital. This converter does not included analog pass through, which basically means, no analog channels if you use this unit. To use analog, you will need to split the antenna input into two and then use a switch or multiple inputs on the TV or receiver. Once the cut-off date arrives, these analog channels will only be made available in very remote places.
If you want to check your available channels, use http://antennaweb.org/.
Wikipedia is also hosting a comparison for different available units, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CECB_units
Not everything is filled out, but it should give you a place to start.
Be sure to use the auto scan to enable as many channels as the antenna can pick up as a digital broadcast and select the correct aspect ratio for your TV.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
We live in central NJ and have always gotten clear, sharp reception of the NY stations. We also pick up the Philadelphia area stations, but with lesser quality. So I was really disappointed when I connected the Zenith converter box and it only found 7 channels (mostly sub-channels)...3 PBS, 3 educational, and a Spanish channel. No network stations at all. We have 4 TVs in the house, none digital, and didn't want to replace them all, so we bought 2 converter boxes. A waste of [$]since they're not returnable.

Several reviews state that they can not get as many stations after hooking up the converter. This may be due to the stations not converting to digital broadcasting yet.

Setup: JVC 32" TV with a JVC 5.1 Surround Sound receiver-Samsung DVD/VCR combo, roof mounted mid range antenna with amp and rotor. Used my Government coupon to purchase. Radio Shack handled the coupon well, after a failure getting another huge retailer to understand what to do with it. Located 22 miles north of the main Baltimore, MD stations' tower. I am now getting 26 channels (which includes new versions of analog stations). I get all of the Baltimore market stations perfect, all of the Washington, DC market stations perfect (with the exception of channel 4, which will occasionally pixelate), and one station out of York, PA (43). If I turn the antenna 180 with the rotor, I'm sure I will get Lancaster, Red Lion, Harrisburg, and York stations, too. Basically, the digital stations have perfect video and stereo sound. I have set up my universal remote control to operate this unit (shows up as a Zenith or Jerrold CATV box). You cannot go wrong with this unit, there are no negatives about the transition. Remember, you cannot have any more features (digital A/V handoff, etc.) and still qualify for the government coupon. This is just to continue the functionality of your analog TV past the digital transition date. And it does that very well.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The video was pretty good. The only big negative is that there is a high pitched noise on the left channel. When using the separate video/audio connections, pulling out the left channel cable removes annoying high pitched noise. Google "dtt900 left channel noise" for more information.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Some reviewers have commented that channels they used to get have gone missing. One possible answer is that some digital stations now broadcast on a new RF channel, and not over their original channel number. With this box, I kept typing in the old channel number only to see "no signal" on the screen. To solve this, I had to manually add the correct RF channel numbers through the "channel edit" menu since the auto programming missed them. To find the correct RF channel number, I recommend visiting titantv.com. You can get to your area's digital channel listing by using your zip code. The RF channel number is in parenthesis in small type beneath the main channel numbers. Now all my channels are back and looking better than ever.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
None of the converters will work at my place. I get only four channels when I use to get 10 analog channels. Looks like it will be either cable or a dish. I'm sure this is a great converter. The channels I got were excellent.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Set up was pretty easy (make sure your antenna is plugged in though.) Instruction manual not needed but helpful just in case. This added WAY more channels (including abc1, abc2, nbc1, nbc2, etc.) than I had before or even knew existed all for free (almost like getting basic cable tv for free!) Reception is crystal clear for all channels - much, MUCH improved than the old way of just having an antenna. Glad I bought it (had the best reviews compared to the ones at Best Buy and Walmart) and I used the $40 gov coupon. Only issue is that I can't watch CBS channel 2 in Chicago because it says no signal (even before I got the converter box channel 2 was the worst channel in terms of poor reception - I think they broadcast from Hancock not Sears Tower like the other channels). FYI, I live on the northwest side of the city. Overall this is well worth buying this converter box for everything else though. The remote rocks too. A world of difference. Highly recommended.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought one on Saturday with the [$] coupon, not knowing what to expect. I considered buying a new rooftop antenna at the same time, but decided to wait and see how if performed with the current (old) antenna. It worked great. There are more digital channels in my area (Ft. Worth/Dallas) than analog. I not only got a better picture, I now have even more channels. Many of the UHF channels that were fuzzy at best are now perfect. A couple of features I like are the zoom button. You can view wide screen, or full screen, or let the channel pick for you. The setup is very easy, and the remote control will control my newer TV. I was so pleased I bought a second unit on Sunday for our second older TV. The picture is just as great, but the TV is so old that the remote won't control its on/off.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Hooked everything up in a whiz. It got ONLY four stations but not any of the ones I got before. Just didn't pull even the clearest stations I used to get. The quality of the four stations I got were fantastic. Not so sure any of the boxes will work. Looks like I'll have to go cable or satellite.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I am using the Zenith unit with my old rabbit ears antenna (non-boosted plain old vanilla) and am getting crystal clear reception, living about 30 miles from Houston. With the old rabbit ears on analogue signals NBC (channel 2 in Houston) always had terrible reception. Now NBC is crystal clear, flawless. In the menu under "aspect ratio" use the "cropped" option to get the picture to fill your screen, you'll have to do this for each channel, but you'll only have to do it once so no big deal. I am absolutely delighted with the Zenith unit, in fact I bought another for the bedroom t.v. and, again with rabbit ears, perfect reception. Also picking up more channels than before. Probably could get even more if I get a rooftop antenna.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Overall, this Zenith DTV Converter is doing a good job on Day 1, so for[$], I guess I shouldn't complain. Yet, there are few -- very few, but important disappointments here. First, the sound output on full-HD quality broadcasts is annoying. The highest-range of the sound scapes on the eardrum with digital noise on the pronuciation of words using "s," "sh" and "ch." If you've heard a highly-compressed MP3, you are familiar with this sound. My other problem is with the technology of digital broadcasting, I think. What would have previously been an unpleasant but tolerable snowy picture on over-the-air broadcasting, has become a jumbled blocky mess with no sound at all via this digital conversion box.So, when the signal is strong, the picture is fantastic and the sound is tolearable. When the signal is somewhat weak, the viewing experience is basically unacceptable. This is not a total surprise -- we gave up cable TV to save money. And we sometimes had the the same problems with the digital cable signal, especially on the MOJO channel. Anyway, I've spent hours playing with rabbit ears trying to get a clear signal on every channel, and it's been more than a challenging puzzle. Some previously OK channels are hardly coming in at all now, but some others are coming in great that didn't come in very well before. There are a number of "new" channels that we couldn't get before (without the cable hookup). Many of the broadcast stations carry multiple channels at once, apparently -- that's potentially very nice.I just wish the sound was a little better and the "snowy" channels showed something instead of blanking out completely. If someone has REALLY developed a good & powerful indoor antenna, please let me know what it's called.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Couldn't be any easier to set up! Got two yesterday. Both work fantastic so far. One's hooked up to the TV reciever on my computer. The other one is hooked up to my VCR. Both devices only have analogue tuners. Now I don't have to replace either of them next February. These converter boxes really cleaned up the reception, added a bunch of subchannels, were very easy to set up and thanks to Uncle Sam I got an $80.00 discount off the purchase price. One other reviewer stated that it doesn't work with their VCR. Other than the ability to record multiple channels atuomatically, there is no loss of function at all. And the quality of the reception is well worth the trade-off.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
After investigating all the converters, this sounded like the best value. I bought it tonight. It's great! Lots of features. It's amazing for just [$]after the government coupon. But, it's not so many features that it's hard to setup. The features have defaults. You don't have to delve into the features until after the system is working. It has a useful "guide" (wizard) which walks you through getting it configured. It found about 30 channels (I have an antenna on the roof). Even channels in Tucson I think (channel 7-x).I noticed one reviewer who complained that he couldn't use it with a recorder because the unit turned off. That's a configurable option. You go into "menu" for the channel and set the "auto-off" to "off". It defaults to 4 hours. Most people wouldn't know to go in there and look for options like this. The only shortcoming was in the manual. It wasn't clear that it sends its output to channel 3 (if you use the RF connector). If you use the RCA jack it won't affect you.[...]This is the one to get!

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Just bought it yesterday and hooked it up when I got home. Lost my Channel 7 (in the Los Angeles area) so that was a bummer, but all the other channels were really clear. Only problem is no one ever mentioned that I can't really use my VCR anymore. It can only record the channel that I'm currently watching so I can't pre-program it like I used to. What use is that since I'm already watching the show, I don't need to record it! That's the only part I don't like, otherwise, nice design, compact, and very easy to install. I still have another coupon I haven't used but I might chuck it since I want to be able to record in the future with pre-programming so I'll probably end up buying a flat-screen digital set.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Fast setup, picked up 35 stations, previously only 22 over the air. Crisp clear signal, airplanes sometimes cause breakup. Previous over the air signals were sometimes very poor, so I was worried about the signal strength, but I was amazed!

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Don't wait until 2009. The difference in picture quality is tremendous! And the sound is great too, when piped through a home theatre system. Plus many TV stations offer alternative programming only available on digital broadcasts.
I chose the Zenith converter based upon reviews, and the fact that it comes with a 1 year parts warranty while most others are 90 days parts and labor.
We use an antenna in the attic. We get all the channels we got before (except for a couple of infomercial channels, oh well..) and they all come in crystal clear.
We connected the supplied RCA cables to the TV and used the coax cable for the VCR. Most boxes do not provide the RCA cables.
To record with a VCR, it must be set on channel 3 or 4 and the station to be recorded selected on the converter box. The converter box must be on during recording. It is no longer possible to record on channel while viewing another when using a single converter box.
The only thing I fault the Zenith on is the flimsy remote (which is more or less essential for operation.) Time will tell if it holds up.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I was very happy that the unit works flawlessly from the middle of a city with a fair amount of ground clutter and broadcast shadows. Did I am using my old, cheaper than turds, bunny ear antenna? My analog reception wasn't exactly stellar, but I pull in all the available DTV channels (only 12) flawlessly. Only downside is the inability for the included remote to operate the TV volume.

Works like a champ. Hooked it up, never read the instructions, did a channel scan, set the aspect ratio...was off and running. Way better picture than I've ever seen from an analog TV. Picked up a half dozen more channels
Only thing I didn't like was the remote won't turn the TV on and off...strange...it did once...but then never again.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Using this on a large Sony flat CRT, with a classic 7ft antenna on a 30ft aerial without a rotor.
Setup is simple as long as you have good signal, just hit enter a few times.
The remote control seems sturdy so far, but is not intuitive to use. It'll take a bit of practice to use all the functions on the remote in the dark. Easy to program the power button to operate the TV, but the volume buttons don't operate the TV too.
I like the program guide that comes up too. Its not quite cable tv, but it'll do.
The signal strength meter is nice to see too.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Easy to set up, excellent performance, it also has a signal strength indicator.
cons:there is no warning/instruction label to remove the clear plastic battery wrapper that is almost invisible.(remote would not work until I removed the wrapper.)

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I originally bought the cheaper Magnavox box and it worked fine. However the fact that you CANNOT control the TV's volume with it's remote was annoying. There have also been overheating issues raised and the Magnavox has no vents to cool it and it does get warm. The Zenith box Has a much higher quality look and feel, has channel and power buttons, and the remote will turn most TV's on and off and does have a volume control. Also the guide is much better inthat you can look at the programs on other channels WITHOUT having to actually change channels. Also comes with a composite A/V cable, the Magnavox does not. I also picked up the same number of channels although the zenith may be slightly less sensitive. Overall the Zenith appears to be a much better value for the money.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Researched many different brands and models specifications before deciding on this one. Bought two and the first one was DOA out of the box. Zenith and Radio Shack were both thorough, helpful, and replacement was a breeze. The second and the replacement unit installed flawlessly, improved picture quality and number of channels available with existing outside antenna. Remote is great and easily replaced the remotes for an LG plasma and a 10 year old Sharp. I couldn't be happier.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Antenna: Antennas Direct DB-8 on 30 foot pipe (7 feet above roof peak)no pre-amp, 46 feet coax.
Location: In the middle of 10 acres of woods with 100 foot oak trees (no leaves at present).
Stations: (6) UHF about 35 miles away all in same general location.
Signal Strength: DTT900 shows all (6) stations in good range.
Video quality: great on coax or video outputs.
Audio quality: uncertain - the difference between commercials and regular programming seems worse than strictly analog over the air, as well as the difference in volume between the different channels. I tried RF to TV since the TV specs show some sort of volume control on my TV tuner input, but that didn't make any noticeable difference. We are spending a lot more time raising and lowering the volume than we ever did before.

[...] I read some of the reviews online about which one was the best, and decided on trying out the Zenith Model.I had 2 coupons and got the last 2 Zenith ones in stock at my local Radio Shack. I brought it home, followed the easy instructions for setup, powered it up and followed the easy on screen setup. It located many channels, the HD ones are already there !! So there are like channels in between 7 & 9 (in Maryland 7 is ABC and CBS is 9) so i have a 7.1 which i think is like weather or something, and others too. It immediately improved my signal and picture quality, even tho I still have my analog TV.I had no idea what to expect when I bought it, but was pleasantly suprised and so happy I decided to go out and buy these 2 units yesterday.[...]

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I got this so that my DVD recorder with hard drive could still be used. The DVD recorder is not HD and so I wanted the zenith to act as a DVR. By using its tuner I could set up my DVD player to record shows from the zenith. I could then watch a show on my main tv and record from another channel on my DVD recorder using the Zenith tuner. But every time I turn it on, it turns itself off in a few seconds to a few minutes.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This Zenith DTT900 converter box deserves kudos for its quality picture and construction. It works great and costs reasonable. In spite of all that, it has some limitations. But I'll get to the good things first. Unlike many of its competitors, it has an attractive metal case (not plastic) with excellent ventilation slots. All converter boxes will get warm so don't put it under or atop a DVD player or VCR. The digital pictures are excellent and look equivalent to a DVD. The remote control is easy to use and not overly large.
> The box was able to pick up most of the HDTV stations in the local market. You can test your own antenna first before buying a special "HDTV" antenna. My old rabbit ears worked OK.
> The only 'weakness' of this model is that the default screen is the station screen. In other words, if the station is sending letterbox or small pictures, that's what you see. They have an option called 'cropped' which means 'fill the screen' or show it as if it were my old TV. But you have to go in the menu FOR EACH STATION and change the aspect ratio. Since most people would prefer 'fill the screen', you would think it would be the default. It took about 10 minutes to set all the stations. I can imagine a lot of old timers living with letterbox or small pictures missing this option and being disappointed before someone shows them how to change it. The remote does have a zoom button, but it got irritating using it every time I changed stations. So it made more sense going into the menu to set all the stations to the way I wanted it.
> Also, for very old TVs (the ones that need a
screwdriver to attach the antenna and don't have RCA video inputs or RF plug) you will need to buy an inexpensive 75 Ohm to 300 Ohm Adapter.
> The only other warning is that the abilities of all converter boxes are dependent on the signals sent by the local over-the-air stations. If you are living in a fringe area you may need an amplified antenna or external antenna. Even then, all antennas behave differently depending on where you live. There is NO ideal antenna.
Otherwise, this converter box is an excellent product and does what it is supposed to at a reasonable price.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I purchased one of the set top boxes this morning and I hooked it up to a TV. I liked the results so well that I went back and got another of the same model set top box for a different TV.
I liked the easy set up, channel search, channel delete, and the zoom feature to fill the TV screen with the picture. The set-top box is compact and includes the wires needed to hook the box up to the audio and video inputs of the TV. (Both the RF cable to hook the box to the co-ax antenna input on the TV, and the RCA patch cords for the right and left audio channels and the video input on the TV.)
I would like to see a better program guide to see what will be broadcast further in the future than one show.
I am using a fairly small, inexpensive Radio Shack, 15 year old analog antenna from my home on the east side of Dallas, TX. and receiving a fairly good signal from the DFW area towers located in Cedar Hill, TX. about 25 - 30 miles away. The signal strength meter that is built into the set top box works very well. (The signal strength meter is viewed on your TV screen).
Overall, I think it was easy to set up, and it works very well.

This is definally the Converter Box to buy if you don't want to buy a new TV. It was very easy to setup. I like how it uses the TV Stations for the time.
Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
All the coupon converter boxes work! I also purchased the Digital Stream version from RS. It works equally as well. Both are easy to hook up, both remotes are good. IMO the specs that were given to manufacturers for the coupon boxes are the same and were met! I was given a Magnavox converter box by my sister (who just purchased a new HDTV). It works just as well. Before you you purchase your converter box, do your homework if your looking for the best deal. I can receive all the Chicago, Milwaukee & Rockford stations clearly. Only problem versus analog reception is that (because of signal strength) with digital either you have the "station" or you have a black screen...no in between.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
First of all the product is a God sent. The ability to watch regular tv without any cable or dish network and still receive quality digital programming is the best. Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I got two of these boxes as part of the DTV conversion. I have one attached to the ancient roof-top antenna and get excellent picture and signal strength. I have the other attached to an amplified indoor antenna. It took a little bit of moving the antenna around, but I was able to get a near-perfect signal level there too.
Installation was a breeze. The box includes RCA and RF cables, so I didn't have to purchase any cables. The box also includes a single AAA battery. The battery is an unknown brand so you might want to pick up a set while you're at Radio Shack. :)
In the Dallas area, I'm getting over 30 HD/DTV channels over a standard antenna, and they look great! The same indoor antenna that was barely getting snowy, ghosted images when attached directly to my TV is now displaying pristine digital picture quality!

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Excellent reception. Fast scanning. Easy to add additional channels. Signal meter on screen so that you can see antenna strength. However...there is no analog pass through or tuner. That means when you hook it up, you lose all existing channels. Some channels won't switch for 11 months, so I'll have to put it on the shelf until then. Designers missed it big time on this one lacking feature.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It worked with the digital antenna signals, but it wouldn't pass through the analog signal from my Dish TV converter. Hence, if I kept it I would have had to buy a signal splitter, signal combiner, and digital filter to construct my own analog signal bypass to get my analog satellite channels back. It would have doubled the cost and had the look of a plumbing nightmare. I returned the unit.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Any converter needs an exterior antenna to realize its full potential. Unlike analog, digital is all or nothing. If the signal is weak you do not get fuzzy...you get nothing. 91% of digital broadcasting will be UHF. The roof top unit needs to be UHF friendly. A power boosted antenna is even better. If most stations in your area come form one location a directional antenna is best. If you are between two or more metropolitan areas, a multidirectional antenna is best. www.antennaweb.ORG (not .com) is helpful.

Comments about Zenith Zenith DTT900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
First impressions of Zenith DTT900 DTV converter
Cool front panel display - red LED off - blue LED on
Lame feature: You must have the remote to complete any functions beyond on/off and channel changing. You must have the remote to perform an initial set-up. No remote - no working converter box.
The single AAA battery supplied with the remote has thin clear plastic over it. This can be tricky. It had me for a minute.
The on screen display has the LG look and signature. The on screen channel display is nice and large. Channel scan is relatively fast. My first scan produced 51 stations! Picture and sound come on immediately when the scan is done.
The unit has a self-setting auto time-of-day clock.
The signal meter is a nice big on-screen display but includes an annoying whiny DirecTV-like sound registry, as well. I guess the intent was for antenna alignment when you can't see the screen but you can hear the audio?
The audio volume control works well.
The deep menu aspect ratio settings have two levels. If you set it to Normal 4:3 it will (kind of) select your screen display for you. If you select 16:9, a second menu becomes available with quite a choice of display sizes. The remote control also allows you to change the aspect ratio and display look.
The deep menu captioning settings allow you to choose between relying on 608 analog or 708 digital captions. Cool. But there is no "auto" to have one default to the other.
The unit has an auto-off feature with five settings: off, delay 1,2,3 or 4 hours.
The audio out can be set for mono or stereo.
The sensitivity and selectivity are not notably different than the Accurian box it replaced. I will watch the way if behaves with propagation fading and DXing. So far: nice but no amazing improvement in pick up.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with it. It is very small (about the size of a small paperback book. It will only sit horizontally. It does not have an upright stand like the RCA.

[...]All approved boxes will do stereo if audio cables are used even though this page glosses over that and suggests only one audio connector. However I have yet to figure out which boxes will let your hear stereo, just stereo even, using just one RF cable which obviously even many stereo sets FORCE you to use.THe requirement for receiving all multicast signals applies to video only, so traditionally multicast alternative audio feeds I assume are not carried by this box! (no spanish, narration for hearing impaired etc.)

This Digital STB has a fantastic RF front end, and is extremely tolerant of antenna placement.
The only drawback is that during the setup you have no way to indicate if your area observes Daylight Savings Time. It assumes that you do. Not a problem for me, but it might be for those areas of the country that do not use DST. The workaround is to change your Time Zone during Summer months.

Only one output, so you need to buy as many as you have analog TVs.
Digital TV may never take off like the industry wants us to believe. After all LPs are still in circulation, and the audio industry tried unsuccessfully to manipulate the media over and over only to lose ground completely.
