I use this antenna and I picked up Oklahoma State Pd while I was outside of Chicago IL. I'm not kidding or lying about this but this antenna is a great antenna. I would not lie that this antenna is a great antenna especially picking up skip with this antenna since my hobby is scanners and I have been wanting to hear further away stations such as Oklahoma State Pd.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I'd like to echo a few and question the majority. Before I got this I read the reviews and thought this thing will fly of my car and not help at all.. BOTH ARE FALSE. I have been in excess of 80mph with the antenna on top of my Villager Van and it is still there! It also did improve the reception of some signals and cleaned up the others. If you are looking for a scanner antenna, not a ham or CB antenna this is a good by. My only bad comment has been made by many and that is the finish will rust soon and a coil (spring) load would be nice to help with the low tree banches etc. Good antenna for a good price. PS- the window mount antenna will come off don't but it, but this mag mount is great!

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Good antennea, picks up good signals on my digital scanner that I have mounted in my car. The only down fall is I had to tighten it down every other day if I was doing a lot of highway driving because it losened were it screws into the mag mount. Had to use lock tight to solve this issue. Other than that, it held up good traveling 70-80 mph on 90+ miles round trip and held on good at highway speeds when there were strong winds blowing.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Works great to move between our cars, can be mounted on either the roof or trunklid. Over time the "coils" have developed a slight backward bend but it still works perfectly. Extremely durable, I've put it on the roof and forget to remove it - the base allowed it to tip over when it hit the roof of the garage with no damage; yet it doesn't release even driving 65mph into strong head-wind over 50mph. That's holding on with a combined wind speed of over 100mph!

Remember to clean the antenna elements periodically, just like anything else they can collect bugs and dirt. If too much collects it will cause more drag and bend the antenna farther at highway speed - decreacing reception. A wet paper-towel works, or for stubborn bugs take it off the car and use some soap.

One problem though, antennas doesn't work well on the trunklids of some cars where the trunk opens up parallel to the back window. In that case, there isn't enough room between the trunklid and back window for any antenna. This isn't a problem with the antenna, it's a design limitation of some cars.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I was somewhat disappointed that the reception of Richmond area 800MHz was worse than using the telescopic antenna that was shipped with my Uniden 796d. I live in a townhouse complex, therefore an outside antenna is out of the question. I thought by setting this mobile antenna in the window sill my reception would markedly improve. That has not proven to be the case.

I have used J-poles before, but, when I got this little mag mount over christmas, my reception was a lot better and I was able to hit some of the repeaters in my area alot better than, what I had with a ladder line antenna.

Works really well in 2m and 440cm, useful if you in a restricted community and works well in an attic with a wood roof. I will get another to supplement to use with my HTX-202, as the current one took residence with my Yaesu 1802 2m mobile.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I have been using these antennas since the early 90's. I have used them for both scanner reception and 2m/70cm transmission. These antennas hold up great under pressure as a mobile unit, but as mentioned by others, it REQUIRES and iron or steel mounting surface. Never had a problem with these antennas, even at speeds in excess of 100mph. Small and lightweight, these also make wonderful antennas for people in apartments and condos. They easily mount to the top of an air conditioner for outside use. I have also used them inside, mounted to the top of refrigerators and chest freezers. A word on trasmitting; I would not recommend this antenna for high power use, but it works extremely well at 85 watts and lower. I would, and have repeatedly, recommend this product to anyone looking for a super antenna.

I am a radio nut and I have own many of these antennas for many years and I highly recommended. I agree with the person that suggest that it should be recommended with the sale of all scanners. I was a voluteer fire fighter/ EMT and I never had a problem with it except for the set screws which will strip if you monkey with the antenna to much. I never had it the antenna fall off even at speeds above 75 mph. It exceeded everyone of my needs and it does great with my Pro-96 & many other radios that I own. All my fire fighter friends use this antenna without problems.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Just for fun, I hooked it up to my radio and stuck it on the air conditioner outside.

To tune it for tx, you start with the shortest segment and tune it for UHF. Then you can move the top load to lengthen or shorten the top section of the antenna to get 2M tuned up.

I ended up with a very good match on both 2M and 440.. the SWR meter on my radio doesn't even come up from the bottom now.

I don't know how much power this antenna can handle, so I'd suggest staying with lower power levels, but it seems to be working well.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Would have never believed it if my son hadn't tried it but it makes a great mobile antenna for a dual band HT.

I DO NOT understand the folks that say it won't handle hiway speed. Ours handles 85mph no problem, but will tip over in low brush and trees due to no spring.

Checked into a 2-meter net last nigtht with an HT and got rave signal ratings.

If you want an affordable, multi-purpose antenna, this is the cat!

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I currently have eight of the 20-032's.
They will hold up well when mounted on a pole with a good sized piece of painted angle iron for BASE use.
I plan to try to reinforce the coils with gorilla tape.. Our scanner club the GYMA in Youngstown, Ohio also likes them. I also use them on my cars & they have never fallen off. ICE & SNOW can make WINTER use risky. They greatly increase the performance of hand held scanners used in vehicles. Sales Associates should suggest use of the 20-032 to all customers purchasing any scanner.

I should have paid more attention to the reveiwers who stated that it will not work as a mobile antenna. Antenna slides right off the roof of my Caravan at speeds above 30 MPH. Had they increased the quality or size of the magnetic base this would be a fine antenna. If you are using as a base at home this will likely meet all of your needs.

Decent Stationary POOR MOBILE

Best Uses:
Attic/Roof Mount, Bedroom, Living Room, Portable Devices, Small Rooms

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

This antenna should only be used in a stationary setting. Do NOT use as a mobile antenna on the roads or highways as the magnet is NOT going to withstand a lot of speed. The antenna itself will bend and whip and will eventually break the coils rendering all but the lowest section non-functional as a receiver. If you are, however, using this antenna indoors or say at a rest stop or camp grounds then you will probably get the most enjoyment out of it as possible. I took a short trip with this antenna being used as a low-power transmit 2m/70cm while mounted on the trunk of my 2001 Alero. I figured it would be "ok" since most of the wind would only hit the top, more flexible segment of the antenna. I was wrong, and 65MPh winds are enough to not only permanently bend the antenna, but also to topple the antenna. I ended up putting the magmount as close to the trunk lip towards the rear window as possible and that was the only way to keep it righted. If I'd had some sort of removable rubber cement or silicone I might have tried to secure it with a small bead around the edge for a bit of added support. If you're going to need a scanner or transceiver antenna, get one that is far sturdier and has a REAL mount - magnets have their place, but not under this antenna.

It is, however, good for a fridge magnet!

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I bought this antenna to hopefully improve the reception of my Uniden (indoor/base) scanner. My reception was so poor with the stock antenna that I could barely hear our county dispatch; not any more. I mounted this antenna on my back porch roof and "WOW!" I now not only receive county dispatch, but also individual units throughout the county, air ambulance(s), Med-Com, and on average two other county dispatches. The magnet mount may not be so hot on an auto, but it has withstood some strong storms (high wind, rain, ice & snow)where I use it. If you are looking for a cheap 'boost' for your home based scanner...this antenna is it.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I've had this antenna for about 2 1/2 years, and have gotten some good use out of it. It's used with my Uniden BCD996T scanner when I go on long trips. The worst thing about this antenna is that it will fly off the vehicle if you are traveling against strong headwinds at 65+ MPH. I had it fall off the vehicle 3 times in one hour, which was really annoying. Luckily, the coax is strong and doesn't rip out of the mount. It would make a world of difference if Radio Shack had a stronger and wider mount for this, because the antenna is just too long for the mount that it comes with. I also recommend cleaning the connection between the mount and antenna (where it screws together) every now and then for the best reception results. Haven't tried transmitting on the ham bands with this, but wouldn't want to anyways because I have other mobile antennas for that. It is good for casual use, and temporary base installation by sticking it to a cookie tin and putting some bricks or stones on the tin to keep it in place.

But make sure you have it on a metal surface so you can get even better reception. It lasted for about 8 months on my car before it broke. My Dad had his for 3 years which it still works. GO FIGUAR... works just a little better as the [$] antenna that also breaks too easy.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Antenna very narrow banded for a "wide band scanner antenna" You are going to spend untold hours trying to tune this thing for 2 meter and 440 transmit, since there is no suggestions which segment to try first. I couldn't get it below 1.5:1, and that was on the lowest part of 440. It quickly goes to over 3:1 as soon as you move upwards. Forget this.

The antenna performs well, but mine is bent in a 20-degree angle at the lower coil, a weak mechanical connection point. I have admittedly hit a few tree limbs with it, but after all, this IS a mobile antenna. I have to replace it with a more robust antenna before it breaks off completely.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

It uses tiny setscrews to hold the antenna pieces to the two coils. To adjust SWR you have to unscrew them and slide the antenna parts around.

The screws themselves are too short, and the coil threads are not deep enough, so you get one full thread engaged and thats it...try to get tight and you strip it.

So...hard to adjust SWR, and when you do, you might strip the threads.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Antenna improved reception as it should. Can't complain about it falling off at 75mph, the auto manufacturer should have used steel. Haven't bent it yet and it still looks like new. To Radio Shack marketing tech's...I'd like to see a non magnetic version of this antenna with a ground plane kit for fixed station applications. My ground plane kit looks like a hillbilly made it...not my fault, I was born this way. Until then may I suggest to the readers that on high VHF, the marine VHF antennas offered don't need a ground plane. They work good mounted on any structure. That's for VHF only...not recommended for VHF/lo or anything above 165mhz. It did improve aircraft reception.

I read the bad reviews about this antenna, the plastic on the loaded coil bending and breaking. I thought it may be a good idea to reinforce the coil before I put it on my truck. The antenna really does work well. I cut gorilla tape to the proper width and wrapped it three times around the coil. With a lighter I burned off any threads sticking out. The tape is black so any imperfections can be hidden with a magic marker. This antenna is now very strong. There is no way it will break and the best thing is you cannot tell there is reinforcing tape on it. Looks like it came from the factory, the coils are just a little bit thicker. With this fix, I would strongly recomend this procuct.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

Im overall vary pleased with this antenna. I use it occasionally for scanning, it seems to do the trick. I bought it on a wim, didn't really need it. Im always in the city, and don't actually need at outside antenna while mobile. It seems to tune in just fine. I tried hooking it up to my 2m mobile radio, (im a ham), I couldn't raise the local repeater with out a fight. This antenna seems a little pricey, so look around before you buy. Im in South Dakota, so my antennas are subjected to the harshest conditions, this antenna has kept its finish. I now have all of my antennas mounted on my car, so think about possibly drilling or mounting your antenna on permanently. Its actually A LOT nicer once your finished installation.

This product was a waste of money. I drive with 2 magnet mounted antennas one for my CB (holds up to 85mph on the highway) and this scanner which falls off anytime I go above 40 mph. The reception isn't much to jump up and down over although it is adequate, but I wouldn't recommend this product, it's no good when its dragging behind your car. I'm replacing mine.

I LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE IT IS EXTREMELY TOUGH TO GET SIGNAL. The antenna makes a world of difference for my weather radio, however IT WILL NOT MAKE MIRACLES!! I went from 0% reception to about 65% reception. Recently, Im picking up another signal which is crossing my normal signal. This antenna makes is semi possible to have signal, and would probably be perfect for any other semi-receiving area.

I use this mounted in the attic on a Pro-97. VHF and UHF signal is very good. 600MHZ and above drops way down to where the stock 'rubber duck' is better, pretty much useless for trunking systems unless modified. Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I had a version of this antenna on my last car, and it was great. Figured I'd buy the same one for my truck, and it worked the same, but the mounting was a lot different, and the antenna quickly showed it's flaws. Forget mounting it on the roof of your truck if you're going into any parking garage. After a month or so, the lower coil started to severely bend at moderate highway speeds (70, 75mph tops). For the money you pay, the antenna should be much more robust. Replaced this weekend with a 'through the glass' scanner antenna that, so far, has been fantastic.

I bought one over five years ago. I have had no problems with it. It would receive and transmit well with my 2meter handheld with less that 1 watt of output power. I had my truck up to 80 mph and the antenna stayed in place. I noticed the newer reviews were negative. Could it be that the newer antennas aren't made the way they used to be?

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

I too should have read these comments before purchasing this antenna. Within one week of purchase the antenna came apart while on the highway at approximately 60 mph. The upper coil failed and I saw the top half go flying in the rear view mirror. Went back to the store and they replaced the antenna for free. I removed the middle section of the antenna and the upper coil and have been using it in this configuration since. After getting to work today I noticed the lower coil is now starting to bend. Guess I'll have to try and find another antenna, one that's going to last.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

This antenna's reception is great. I have no problems with its performance. However IT WILL BREAK at highway speeds. The coils are weak. Mine broke with less than a week of use. I took it back to RS and they offered a replacement coil that was a little beefier for free. Seems to me if they know there is a problem with the design they would build the antenna better to start with. They did replace the entire antenna at my request.

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

As a STATIONARY antenna, ease of use and reception are awesome with some elevation. Used as a mobile - ESPECIALLY 45MPH+ - put this in the trunk!!! Your antenna will bend, the coils break, and you just paid $XX for a magnetic paperweight. If you need a quick and reliable home scanner antenna, take it. If you're going mobile, go for HAM or COMMERCIAL gear.

Pros:

Comments about RadioShack Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna:

This antenna's mag mount strength was good, and the reception was great. However, it does not do good at highway speeds. The coils bend over and break at highway speeds and/or high winds. It would be nice if Radio Shack would offer more choices. I bought 2 of these and they both broke. Maybe if they were offered with springs to help with wind and speed. These reviews are nice, am glad I'm not the only one who had problems with them bending and breaking. Can't say I'll buy anymore.
