I bought my PRO-92 in 2000 or so, possibly late 1999. I had software and a serial cable for programming it and my PRO-2067. I lost the PRO-2067 in Katrina, but my PRO-92 is still working.
I had to relocate after Katrina, and so the frequency database in my PRO-92 was worthless. I looked around for a replacement programming cable, and here it is!
I installed this cable using the included Vista drivers on the CD-ROM, and after the drivers were loaded (it took all of a second), I hooked up the PRO-92 and, lo and behold, it read the frequencies already in the radio. Good enough!
I entered a new database of local frequencies, and performed some other changes you simply can't perform via keyboard.
Keeping fingers crossed, I uploaded the new information into the PRO-92 and was gratified to see that it all loaded perfectly.
My PRO-92 is back!
The cable has also worked perfectly on my PRO-137 and PRO-433 scanners...you really have to find some decent programming software to make these scanners perform at optimum efficiency.
I enthusiastically recommend the USB Programming Cable to all Radio Shack scanner users who want to achieve maximum capabilities from their scanners.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Did not use the USB Cable, The directions on how to download frequencies to the Software was way to complicated for me. Ended up figureing out how to program the scanner the old fashioned way. Hard to write a review pro or con. Could be a great product but was not for me..

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
It took Vista a couple of times to install the drivers, but that's Vista for you. It found the unit on USB Com6. Just keep trying com ports if it doesn't see it. Using ARC96 programming software I was able to easily program my PRO96 scanner. Great product that works very well. I like the TX/RX LEDs that flash when data is being transferred.

Works great with the Pro-2096. Its compatible with Windows Vista, after the drivers are installed its all plug and play. The driver CD does NOT come with software for programming, that will need to be purchased seperately. I recommend the Starrsoft line of programming software[...] its very easy to use.

I saw reviews that claim that it doesn't install on winxp or winxp 64 or vista or vista 64, will it does just go to [@] and download the latest driver which is CDM 2.04.16 I picked the .exe one, either the VCP or D2xx they both are the same and double click it to install on my vista 64 before installing the device. Then when I install the device it install the device without no problem. The device is a ftdi chip.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
I am using with Pro-95 scanner, Windows XP and separate freeware program Win95 download from starrsoft dot com. [...] Neither the software nor the cable had good instructions. It took me 2 days of internet searching and trial and error to get the cable connected and working.FIRST HINT: put the disk in your computer and attach the cable. Let Windows automatically install the drivers, go with all the default options. It will actually install two devices, even though the cable is a usb cable, one of the devices it wants to install has the word serial in the name... ignore the name and install BOTH devices. SECOND HINT: After it installs the drivers, open your control panel from the start menu. Navigate to: system > hardware > device manager > ports and make a note of which com port the usb cable is installed to. You will need to tell your software program where to find it.THIRD HINT: You cannot use this cable unless you also have some third party software. I was lucky and found a freeware version for my scanner, but they can run about 20 - 50 bucks.FOURTH HINT: My scanner user manual and the software instructions gave me no help at all after it was all installed and connected. Be prepared to stumble around for a bit to make this work. When everything was connected and turned on, my scanner defaulted to "clone mode" with a message that asks if I wanted to send ? I didn't know what this meant, and it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the manuals, but it is normal. If you are using the "Win95" scanner programming software from starrsoft, install the cable, set the program up on your computer, open the program and configure the program for the correct com port that your cable installed to. Then tell the software whether you want to get freqs out of your scanner or send them to it. If the scanner is in "clone mode" that's okay, it should work.My recommendation is only because there aren't any other options. If I told a friend to get this item, I would be sure to be there to walk them through the connection and install because it IS NOT self-explanatory.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
This interface works fine with ICOM radios that have the CI-V jack. You must use the adapter cable (supplied) and set DTR and RTS to "off" in the control software. I have used this cable with Logger32 and N1MM and I'm sure it will work fine with similar logging programs. It works under Vista without any problem.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
The cable does not work with XP64 or VISTA 64 bit systems. It will work with XP32 bit systems and there are workarounds for Vista32 bit systems. If you are using a V32 system then let Vista install the drivers...you won't need the CD. It worked just fine on my sons XP32 machine. It was a PITA on the Vista32 laptop and impossible on the Vista64 machine. KNOW your system before you buy.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
I haven't yet been able to get this cable to work. It is probably something on my end that I haven't figured out yet, but I don't know what.
A couple of comments:
1) This was listed as the correct cable to use with my PRO-164 scanner. However, when it came, it didn't list the 164 anywhere in the documentation. I had to go back online to make sure I really did have the right cable.
2) It doesn't come with anything except drivers. So plan on spending ANOTHER $20-$50 to get some useful software to work with this.
3) I tried to follow the instructions very carefully (because installing the default windows driver will prevent this cable from working). However, when I plugged it into my Vista machine, the prompts were nothing like the ones decribed in the documentation and I was never given an option to install the drivers on the CD rather than the default ones. I hope this didn't screw things up.
4) As stated above, I'm still not sure if it works. It might be that I screwed up the drivers or it might be I don't yet understand how to use the new software. I might have the wrong port selected. I don't know.....
Good luck. This whole thing is not for the casual person (in my opinion).

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Check the packaging, the old stock looks shop worn and say " Includes a CD with a USB driver for Microsoft® Windows 98, ME and XP".
The newer better looking package says "Includes a CD with a USB driver for Microsoft® Windows 98, ME, XP and Vista." Same catalog # 20-047 so be sure your buying the right one.
Hardware and software Installation is a breeze. Windows wizard will also install drivers that work, although the packaging says it wont, but it does.
In the past I used the old serial programming cable form RS and that worked great. Having purchasing a new HP desktop computer I needed to interface my scanners with my new PC that had no serial ports. This USB programing is the answer.
"I highly recommend it"!

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Be careful NOT to connect this cable to the headphone jack on your scanner, it will damage the programming cable. It must be connected to the PC/IF jack only. This cable worked fine with my Pro 197 Digital Scanner and "psrEdit" software (not included with the cable) before I mistakenly plugged it in to the headphone jack and destroyed it. Obviously, it has no protection feature to prevent damage. A [$] lesson I learned the hard way.

This cable works with my Compaq XP PC and both
ICOM 706M2G and 746PRO. I did use the disk supplied but did have to reinstall at the device
manager again.. Also, i had to use the adapter
cable which i think is a stereo to mono adapter
and i also had to turn off the CI-V 731(item 37) to OFF in the radios setup menus. Then it worked ok . I also did check the settings for the interface baud rate in all three places. I used this with Ham Radio Deluxe and it seems to be ok.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
After reading the mixed bag of reviews, I was a bit skeptical using this with Vista. I did not use the supplied disc and let Vista find the drivers. Within a minute Vista had installed the driver and id'd the correct com port. In less than 5 minutes from taking the cable from the bag, I had loaded all of the frequencies from a Pro-96 into Win96 (just as a test). It is a bit pricey if all you need is the cable, but all in all, this is an excellent product.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Win 500 would not "auto-find" my pro-106 with attached adapter. After I removed it all was well. I did install driver from CD. A bit expensive. Really, when are we going to get a standard USB interface for our radios?
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Plugged up cable, installed driver, started Win97 and within 10 minutes had downloaded programming from Pro-97 Scanner, made changes and uploaded new config back to radio. Works as described. I hate reading manuals and this radio has too many options so the software made me want to learn more about scanning and not how to program a complicated radio.

I purchased the programing cable and followed the vague instructions. I attempted to put this program on three different computors and it works on none of them. Very confusing directions. I wish it would work as I wish to change some of the ch. on my PRO096.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
I cannot imagine programming the PRO-2096 manually for all the necessary frequencies in my area. This Interface, along with software (i.e., Win96, purchased separately) is a winner.

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
The disk that came with the product had outdated drivers and had no instructions for Windows Vista. Despite the warning, I let Windows Update find the correct drivers and that worked fine. I was disappointed that I have to use the adapter cable for my particular scanner instead of having the correct connector installed on the cable. Just another place for it to fail later. But it's about the only option for programming a Radio Shack scanner from a PC, and it does work.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and this is my experience with the scanner cable installation. (1) I DID NOT insert nor did I use the CD that came with the cable. (2) I plugged the cable into my Radio Shack Pro-95 scanner (3) I turned on my scanner and plugged the USB end into my computer. (4) Vista automatically started searching for, found, and installed the correct USB port driver on Windows Update online (5) Then Vista asked for permission to search for the correct serial port driver, found it on Windows Update online and installed it. It gave me serial port number 8. I opened my copy of WIN95 program and set it to connect to serial port number 8 and I was done! All functions work great!

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
First, and most important, this is a cable and nothing more. There is no software with it or available at RadioShack. Also, try it without the little adapter piece because my Pro-97 worked fine without the adapter even though it says use it...in fact, I think it worked a little faster without it.StarSoft Software's Win97 program worked great with this cable on my Pro-97 radio and it let me adjust some things that I can't otherwise change (like battery alarm levels) as well as back up my settings, just in case.[...]a bit tricky to set up initially (finding which COM port it's on and loading the drivers) but that's only the first time, then it's very easy to use and reliable. It DOES WORK ON VISTA Home Premium, I am happy to say after getting a new computer...Vista complains about the driver signing but then it loads.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:

Easy installation when you follow the instructions. Using Win-95 from www.starrsoft.com For programming my Pro-95. Make sure it works with your scanner before purchasing!!!
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Took me a while to figure out the comm port. You MUST use the driver disk that comes with the unit. Fortunately I had also bought Scancat-Lite-Plus software, and Scancat has a built in Comm port detector. Their FAQ told me to plug the cable in and out and see what comm port showed up differently. With a little little bit of experimentation I was up and running with my PRO-97 AND my PRO-96. I'm a ham and I really like the built in LED's that indicate the thing is working. John - Bossier City
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
First, the CD that is included only contains the drivers and manual for the cable. It does not contain scanner programing software, and this is clearly indicated on the package. I purchased this for use with a Pro-97 scanner and Starrsoft Win97 scanner programing software. It took me less than 5 minutes to get everything up and running. Works great. Just make sure that you have the CD in the computer when you first plug the cable into a USB port, and then point windows to the driver folder on the CD when it asks for the driver. Once the drivers are installed, go to Control Panel-System-Hardware-Device Manager-Ports and see what comm port it grabbed, and then ensure that you select the applicable comm port in your scanner programing software. I think the ones that are having problems with this cable and asssociated drivers either don't know what they are doing, or have a unique problem with thier system.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Pretty easy to use. The biggest problem was determining which comm port to use, but that is not the problem of the cable. Use it with 3 scanners. After resolving comm port issue it has worked flawlessly for more than a month. Sure makes changing the frequencies in the scanners easier. Worth the price.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
read review and purchased anyhow, first cable was BAD, took it back they were very nice about it and exchanged cables, second one works fantastic, very happy now. So my next choice is what software to buy after the trial is over.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Much better than the serial interface cable. Has rx x status indicators which is a plus. I see some had trouble "programming". First, there are no programs that come with the CD. Only the driver and, if the instructions are followed, there are no issues installing the driver. After the driver is installed, you can change the Com port it's connected to. No brainer. I used it with the RS firmware upgrade and the Starrsoft software without a problem.

This cable will not work. I am using a pro95 scanner. Driver loads successfully. But will not upload or download anything. it times out on downloading from the the scanner. when you send to the scanner it acts as if it's sending. I am a systems engineer so it not like I dont know computers. not a lot of troubleshooting help from radioshack or the maker of the cable GME.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Works great. Upgraded my PC and laptop and no longer have a serial port to use with the old cable. This solves the problem. To everyone that has posted comments about the software not working...read the package!!! It does NOT come with software. It is a cable only. You need to provide your own software. This is stated right on the package.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
I was a little afraid that I had purchased the wrong cable after reading reviews listed on this site but I decided to try it anyway. I found it works with no problems on Windows XP, plug the cable into USB port, load the driver from the disk, connect plug to scanner and execute third party software. Couldn't be much simpler.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Works great. This does not include scanner software so don't look for it to be supplied with this cable. I inserted CD into player and followed the directions, plugged it into my PRO-96, opened the program, downloaded from the scanner until I found the correct com port in the scanner software and downloaded and uploaded with no problems and it only took about five minutes or less to setup. Would recommend this cable. Pretty lites also when uploading or downloading..Thanks Radio Shack..Keithmj

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Thanks to Radio Shack for providing this cable at ALL. Walk in, and buy it! Those that have given this a bad review are either inexperienced with scanners or computers, or don't know what they're even commenting on. This is a great replacement cable for the previous serial plug type (since serial ports are getting harder to come by.) And the software for most units supported, is readily avalable online for free. (Win9X) The price of the cable however, is a little high when other similar ones can be purchased online. $20 would be a better price. Just make sure that what you buy, is what you need, and you know what to do with it. If it doesn't work for you, then you're not using it correctly, or you're trying to use it with the wrong scanner. So don't bash the product here, just return it to RS for a refund. Great, flexible product! Get's 5 stars from me no matter what the rating shows.

MAJOR RIP-OFF
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Something to think about before purchasing: there is no software included on the CD, only the drivers to make it work with your computer. Unless there is some type of software available on the web, such as Win97 for the Pro-97 scanner, you will not be able to use this item. That being said, once I got it working, it works great, but Radioshack should have put some more thought into it.

Using the 20-047 with a Pro-97 for several months now. Has consistently allowed me to make on the fly configuration reprograms for different areas from my laptop with no problems. Using it with WIN97 for web data imports. A great combination.

Okay. You need to use this with Win96 software in order to transfer V-scanner files and memory back and forth between your PRO-2096 and PC. If you put the CD-ROM in the CD drive, then plug the cable into the USB plug, Plug 'n Play should see it and start installing it. Tell it to get the driver from the CD-ROM drive, and it will find it and install it. It will then go through another install procedure for the Serial/USB installation, do the same as before, and it will work. When I was done on my Win2K machine, it assigned COM4 to the USB cable. A procedure describing the above is on the CD-ROM under the Users Guide folder. This product works as advertised, you just have to read the docs carefully. BTW, the PRO-2096 does not need the conversion adapter to work. The stereo plug on the end of the cable is what it uses. Have fun!

Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
CD has instructions to install the drivers which install OK. (OS: Windows XP SP2.) CD says "User's guide Included" - there is none. There is no information about the features or use of the product (cable/interface). Cable links and triggers 'CLONE MODE' in the PRO-97. Evoking the CLONE MODE does nothing after "Sending data...". I have no idea what the product does. COULD NOT GET THE PRODUCT TO WORK ON EITHER A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP XP.

Product(software) does not work. No instructions. I work w/pc controlled radios for years. This is the worst.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
My PRO 83 scanner doesn't communicate with my laptop via this cable.
Comments about RadioShack USB Scanner Programming Cable:
Device works great under 32bit operating systems, but I can't find a 64bit version of the driver. If you are using Win/XP 64, consider the older serial version until drivers are available!

What is a 5 and what is a 1? If 1 is the worst than this is my rating. Got one cable 20-047. The CD would not work. Returned it for a replacement the second one would not work. (The computer didn't know there was a CD in the drive. The drive works fine for all other applications)
