Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I absolutely LOVE the Pro-197, and it has proven to be the most useful scanner I've ever owned to date. However, it should be noted many people have had problems programming this model because it is not the typical scanner from years past. You may require assistance to program your Pro-197 initially. But once you learn how and why things are done the way they are on this model you will likely love it.

There are several on-line databases that can cater to this model and help you properly program the Pro-197, and they also provide excellent frequency resources no matter where you live. The Pro-197 is one of the top-of-the-line scanners right now but that does not mean it is always simple to use (at least until your learn to use it properly).

Although the Pro-197 may look similar to prior models, it is very different in terms of what it can do. I can only stress that you MUST properly learn to use this model before you can really enjoy it.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I'm not sure why everyone is stating they can't program these. It is a "new type" of scanning, and therefore a new style of programming, but overall very similar to the programming of say the 2055s. Everything is an object now. The TSYS is an object, TGs are objects, etc., etc. The scan lists are basically the "banks" now. Anyway I found it to be fairly straight forward as far as programming, and very much enjoy all the new "tweaks" that can be made now. To the meat though. This trunks great on Moto Type I, II, I/II hybrids, and P25. It also does very well on EDACS, LTR, and conventional P25 systems. The P25 decode is great! I also enjoy the RIDs. The short of it is if you want a good reasonably priced digital scanner grab one of these.

Never could figure out how to program it. The only thing harder than to program it, was to understand the owners manual. Gave up after 4 hours, put it back in the box, and returned it! I have used Radio Shack Scanners for over ten years, none have ever been this difficult! Free 1 year Phone Tech support, was no help either!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I'm a professional reporter. I purchased the scanner at my local Radio Shack on sale for [$]. I keep reading other reviews saying programming was difficult, but I had my frequencies programmed in less than 5 minutes. I also bought the mobile antenna. The audio is very clear and it picks up everything that I want (I live 8 miles out of my town). [$] may seem expensive, but you get what you pay for. This was a good deal as far as I'm concerned.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I had to look for a new Digital Trunking Scanner after all of the public service agencies in the Phoenix, AZ area switched over to a new P25 Digital Trunking system. I have owned several Radio Shack scanners for many years and this Digital Trunking Scanner lives up to the past reputation of other Radio Shack scanners that I have owned. Very good reception, easy to use, no complaints here at all. I was able to purchase the scanner on sale for [$]which is a much better price than any other scanner currently available in this class.

I wasnt sure about spending [$] for a scanner. I wanted to get a digital unit and I finally made the jump when it went on sale for 100.00 off. It is a nice unit once you get used to the new technology for scanning. Having software is a must to make programming easier. I am very impressed how you can use individual talk group ID's for priority now, an absolute must! I would recommmend this unit!

As a long time amateur radio operator, I must say that this is the best scanning receiver R/S has marketed. It is well worth the few extra dollars to invest in some type of scanner programming software. Without the software, programming is rather difficult even for someone that has programmed radios in the past. Once programmed, this is a great radio.

Bought a few hours ago. Took longer to unpack than to get it up and running with the V-Scanner Preprogrammed Data for my area. So no experience with programming yet. Easy to setup the LED and audible alarm alert. Overall, extremely pleased after a couple hours of use. Got on sale for $120 off at local RS!

Only drawback so far is that it picks up so much stuff its hard to follow what is going on where - I get about 5 city PD and FD with only 2 scan lists. Have lots to learn about this scanner but you can listen while reading so its fun.

This is one hell of a scanner. The sensitivity is by far, the best. I pick up towns 20 miles away with the included antenna that I would not have picked up with any other radio. I can only imagine what i'd pick up if I added an outdoor antenna.

Only con is programming. Its not easy and will take time. Just read the manual and definitely get the software to make your life alot easier!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

PRO197 is best used with programming software you can buy off of the internet. RadioShack includes a programming interface cable. You'll need to get (at least) a temporary subscription to RadioReference.com or a similar service (at this writing that was about $15 - but well worth it). Unless you have unusual circumstances, programming just a few times will provide a lifetime of enjoyment with this scanner. Manual programming with any of the new trunking scanners is time-consuming so software is the best option. Once you choose what systems to program in it's a matter of minutes to complete the programming operation. Audio on the PRO197 is excellent - menu navigation for commonly used functions is only moderately complex. The unit is easily floor-mounted, in-dash mounted, or under-dash mounted. Unit is also easily removed from a vehicle for security. It includes a password-protected option so that, even if stolen, the unit is of no use to would-be thieves. Memory capacity is more than sufficient for most avid listeners. Coupled with a glass-mount mobile antenna this scanner is great for casual users and radio amateurs alike. I recommend a direct-power connection to the car battery to avoid static on reception. Depending on the vehicle, using a lighter adapter to power it may be acceptable, but is not optimum. The only con I can think of is that the unit may be a little bit large for smaller vehicles (but there is a lot of high-end technology packed into this puppy). It's GRE under the covers, but RS markets it well.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

This is unquestionably the best scanner I have purchased. I have a lot of commercial receivers and many amateur (ham) radios so was a little reluctant to buy another scanner. But I wanted to monitor the P25 digital trunked systems in my area so I waited for this unit to go on sale. The PRO-197 follows trunked transmissions better than my brand U handheld scanner. I have measured the sensitivity with my signal generator and it is comparable to commercial gear on UHF and 800/900 MHz. Of course, with that extra sensitivity comes front end overload, but the 20 dB attenuator can take care of most issues. Definitely invest in some software for the programming of this unit. If you are sitting on the fence, I say jump and buy this rig!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

One thing first off, I see some reviews from people saying it's hard to program or the Radio Shack guys could not program. If you do not know what you are doing then you have no business buying a high end radio like this! It is not Radio Shacks job to program it for you. So if you want simple stick to a 10 channel VHF/UHF OK? Now I have had this radio in service for a few months now and I love it. I am in St Louis City Mo and use it to broadcast my city PD over my scancast page. If you would like to hear it's audio stop on by [@] With all the options I have to give it an A+. By far the best scanner I have ever owned.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I'm not usually a huge Radio Shack fan, but when I found out this scanner is made by GRE, I decided to give it a try. Since RS has a good return policy, I felt safe giving it a try. Our system is an APCO-25 Simulcast system with excellent coverage. This creates a lot of problems with scanning and decoding. This scanner has done an above-average job of decoding the system data. I'm impressed and would recommend it highly.

I bought mine at the Centerline, MI store. The salesman Daniel and his boss were very kind and helpful. Get RS to program this scanner for you and it will save you a headache or two. I had to do some minor adjustments on my own but now this scanner really never shuts up for more than 3-4 seconds at a time. I have a lot more to learn but I am very satisfied from what I have gleaned in the past few day regarding this remarkable scanner. Radio Shack makes quality products and will strive to give you great customer service. Just ask them. I'm very glad I chose the PRO-197.

I bought it to receive the P25 transmissions. When you set this up for receiving digital, make sure you have it set to NFM not FM or auto. Next store the NAC. You'll see a tremenous change in the clarity. No more "under the water" sound. Get the cable and win500 program. It'll make it much simpler to program. It will also accept programming from your Pro-96 & Pro-97 with the Win500 Driver.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

Have had many scanners and each one was better than the last. This unit - the Pro 197 - is by far the best of the best. It has everything you would want in a scanner. A steep learning curve is involved in the first few days but after that it is a dream to program and use. If you are new to scanners do not buy this and think you can master it in a short while. It will take many days of learning.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

This is my first scanner, ever. Holy mackerel! It might have been overkill. This thing gets more stuff than I imagined was available. I'm still trying to absorb information so I can get it programmed correctly. I ordered the USB cable and bought PSREdit500 to go with it, which helps immensely. The only reason I checked "short range" above is because I have it located in an inner room in the house, near the computer, so I can work on the programming. At this location, the reception isn't the best. I do plan to get an outside antenna some time down the road. From what I've seen this do so far, it packs a lot into a small package. Great price [...] from Radio Shack, too.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

Currently the best digital base/mobile scanner out right now. It's not perfect though, I had to add an FM trap to eliminate intermod on VHF-HI freqs. It's excellent on 400 and 800MHZ public service scanning, so that overrides the negatives the VHF issues it has. It has fantastic analog audio, even on the built in speaker, by far the best I have ever heard. It is extremely sensitive, I can hear police and fire departments using just the supplied whip that weren't heard on my other scanners, even on an outside antenna!

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

Except for a couple of CB radios and unexciting shortwave radios by other makers, scanners are the last true remnant product line surviving the RadioShack golden days when proprietary Ham, SWL, and DXing radios were prominent market targets of the company. This particular digital scanner is somewhat complex but otherwise very a great performer. Sadly, like all digitals, it is priced beyond any hope of incenting new scanning aficionados. Not a promising strategy.

I have owned numerous scanners over the years. I have always been a fan of Uniden scanners, and never a big fan of the Radio Shack models. However, I broke down and order a Pro-197 and Pro-106 before Christmas, and I must say these new scanners are far superior to the Unidens. They have a lot of nice features, and reception if fantastic. I live in a state that uses a statewide trunked digital VHF system and these scanners pick it up flawlessly, as if they were built just for them, where the Uniden sometimes has problems. I have nothing but good things to say about these scanners, and feel sure that anyone that gets one will be pleased.

This is one of the finest scanners that I have owned or listened to. Everything is great with this but it longer to program in the major channels as the insrtuctions could be better in regards to this area.

If you are looking for a new digital scanner you can not go wrong with this one. i have enjoyed but they could have made manual simpler for the beginner level in this new field.

Nice radio and picks up good, just overloads real bad on VHF. I have been fighting with it for over a month, works great on 800mhz and uhf but if you listen to VHF, I suggest you get another model. Stick with the Uniden models that what I should have done. For the features of this radio you cant beat it, however I am very agitated at it for overloading all the time. Just to the point that I am ready to send it back. Believe me stay away from this model.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

This scanner is easy to program. I already own three others including the mobile pro-96, but this scanner is so great! The manual gives great instructions on how to program trunked frequencies. I looked up the frequencies and id's on [@] love that you can select a certain color for the LED light for when someone talks on certain frequencies. You can also make the light flash, keypad solid, flash and there are alarm tones. So I can tell what frequency is talking just by a quick glance or by listening to the quick tone that sounds before the transmission. (You can turn these tones and lights off)Great buy!!

Scanner works great. Have owned several over years but I have to say this one tops them all. Takes some study to program but I'm old school. Just let it search the public service band and it will entertain you enough. With all the other features, learn as you go, you will have a blast. Reception on the included antenna is at least twice that of any other scanner I have ever had. And I mean from the same location as all the others. It just dosen't get any better than this[$]you can't go wrong.

This unit replaced the 2096. The reception is much better. No digital sound or motorboating on simulcast system. This unit is only going to get better with any later firmware updates.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I purchased the Pro96 a year ago and now the 197 for home. With the Pro 96 I ran into the problem of having to keep just one trunking network on one channel, which limis the amount of tower sites I can input here in Michigan. The 197 doesn't have that limitation. I like a challenge, so I program these by hand and haven't tried through the computer programs yet. From what I've learned in the 5 days I've owned the 197 is it's way above and beyond the 96 and was a steal for the pre-Christmas sale price. Even at the current [$], being brand new, it's worth it.

I use the radio to keep up with what is going on around my area. Use it while on patrol to hear information on activity in nearby cities before a bolo can be given out. Great to have one while traveling.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

From my PRO-2096 & PRO-96 REVIEWS:

"I bought the PRO-2096 and the PRO-96 scanners when they first came out. They both still work perfectly. I am still tempted to buy another one.

Programing can be difficult (especially when you have 5000 plus channels to fill up), but if you get programming software, you won't have to worry about poking at buttons forever.

Depending on how you set up your scanner, it can work just fine for you.

I do miss the big size scanners where you can see the buttons when you need to change a channel or bank when trying to drive safely.

Those who purchased faulty scanners, exchange it and get the software for it!"

NOW for the PRO-197 review:

YAHOOOOO, I got more banks! Now to fill them up. Love this scanner! More buttons to learn and sort out, but hey... I got software to program it. This scanner is great for those cities or counties that have way too many trunking systems. This scanner covers the 700 MHz. band which is needed now. Now, I'm just waiting for the handheld to become available.

BTW: I still use my PRO-2096 and the PRO-96 scanners. I still miss the big size scanners. I guess I'll have to use my reading glasses.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

This is my first digital scanner. I'm ok with the object oriented programming. The most confusing thing for me was which system type to use. The Radioreference site for my location (Bucks Co, PA) isn't a great help either. What made the radio work for me was the little booklet that showed the pre-programmed folders...and Bucks was in there. The radio still wasn't receiving since the pre-programmed stuff didn't include all of the control channels. I added that myself, and now the radio works great!

Recommend for new owners to first download the manual for the GRE version of this radio. Much clearer and not edited. Second, get familiar with all of the info on the Radioreference site. Third, look for your locality in the little booklet that comes with the rig. You'll save alot of grief.

I did purchase the USB cable, but haven't tried it yet.

Overall, its a great radio with great audio.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-197 39,000-Channel Digital Desktop Scanner:

I was impressed when I purchased the 2096 several years ago; the PRO-197 rates right up there in providing state-of-the-art scanning capability for a multitude of systems. Manufactured by GRE for Radio Shack, it does take some getting used to the new "object-oriented" scanning (vs. channel-oriented), but the flexibility of the radio is truly remarkable. Reception wise, it is on par with the 2096, which is good, but the added "bells & whistles" incorporated into the PRO-197 make it a radio for the true scanning professional. A myriad of visual and audio alerts, features such as "radio-ID capability" on some trunked systems, and a host of other goodies makes this radio a real treat. Well worth the list price--- if you can catch it on sale, all the better. Highly recommended.

This is a good rig. I have had a GRE PSR-500 for over a year now, and it is just as good or better. Bought 3 Pro 197's about a month ago, and all of them work flawlessly on my state's digital trunking system. Would not hesitate to buy again. Only bad thing is RS does not include the programming cable like GRE does.
