Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Purchased this radio 7 months ago. It worked fine for 5 months. Although the clock works the alerts don't come through any more. If I hit the "weather" button I can hear alerts but they don't come through on their own and the lights that indicate there is an alert don't light up. I took it back to the store to see if they could help me. The employee was totally clueless and didn't even attempt to help me. He just said there wasn't anything he could do. So I'm out [$]

Like many other people who have reviewed this product, I would not reccomend it to anyone else. It has not picked up any SAME/EAS transmissions at all, including test alerts (Yes, I have enabled the test alerts in the menu). This device is intended to save lives, but when it can't alert people to serious hazards, then people are going to get severely injured and/or killed. I'm still barely within my 90 days, so I'm going to return it to the store and see what they can do for me, but definetly a peice of junk. I would buy something 10 times as expensive if I knew that it was going to be reliable in alerting me about life-saving messages. I think there should be a recall on these radios, and anyone who purchased this model should be entitled to a comperable weatheradio.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I just took this radio back to the store and the manager is going to wait for a weekly test to see if it goes off. This thing worked fine for a month , then like everyone else I got the dreaded Check OP screen. And yes I read the manual, even downloaded it and had it up on the computer when I reprogrammed this thing for the 800th time. The programming is not that hard, but the documentation is pretty poor. I have 8 computers that I use for weather alerts also and a police scanner so I am covered , but if I had to depend on this to save my life there would be a major problem because it doesn't work.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

The only negative comment I have is when I program the unit (per instructions) it somehow loses it's ability to automatically alert after a few days. I've set it back to default only for it to repeat same thing over again. This can be life threatening. I put my trust in this unit and it has failed. The sound quality is great. But without the ability to alert me of danger I can't recommend this product.

If you want a radio your life can depend on, DO NOT BUY THIS ONE! Bought this a year ago for my mother, thinking it was a better model than the one I had...WRONG! Worked great for about a month, then began missing test alerts, weather alerts and went into Check Op within a couple days after every reprogramming. AND, we read the manual several times. PLUS, I took it back to Radio Shack twice to be reprogrammed...[...] I've had it in my house to compare it with my old reliable and it's missed all but one alert during our last several storm watches and warnings. Not a warm fuzzy feeling when you live in tornado alley. Next time I'll check ratings first and buy some place other than Radio Shack!

This is a worse radio than the Midland it replaced. I got mad at it because it wouldn't work in a county specific manner. Now this one makes me want to puke. [$] and no performance. I hope Radio shack redesigns this one to work. Programming is a snap. I don't understand what could be going wrong other than bad components. I agree with all the other one star reviews. Great reception if all you want to do is listen to the weather broadcast, but this thing will not activate or even receive a weekly test alert. Buyer beware and return within 30 days or else they'll probably just replace it with the same model.

I own several weather radios and have them in the home (one on each floor), garage, workshop, and in the vehicles. Some are older Radio Shack models that have worked great for several years. This particular model is a piece of garbage and I would not recommend it to anyone. The programming menus are clunky and the thing constantly loses the signal. I am sick of seeing "check op" on the screen. The radio has a habit of losing it's programming and often misses alerts - other radios activate and this one does not. Don't waste your money on this radio.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Bought this radio in November, 2006, shortly after moving to Alabama. It worked fine for a few months, then I noticed weekly test message had not cleared three days after the alert was broadcast.Perhaps I have one of the lucky units that does not go into "Check Op" mode as the radio still receives and alarms for the alerts I programmed. However, the clock is frozen, so the alert "Time Remaining" doesn't count down, nor do the alerts clear at expiration. One other annoying quirk is that, even though I programmed it for "voice" mode, the siren will continue to sound until I push the button. I have come home from work to find it wailing away many hours after a warning was issued.Since it still goes off for NOAA alerts, I have not bothered to replace it. But I have another S.A.M.E. radio on my desk at work whose twin will soon be adorning my desk at home. The irony of it all is that the Radio Shack here (where I bought it) was damaged by a tornado in February, 2008. The store reopened a few months later and is still selling this junky radio.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

My first go-round with this radio: I bought this product about five years and and it worked great for five years ago and then it fell on floor and broke. Had to buy another. The new one: programmed it correctly, b/c I have had experience with the last one, and this new one never worked properly. The alerts were intermittent and I didn't get any weekly tests.. I exchanged it for another. Same thing. Intermittently got the weekly tests, about twice in two months...occasionally warned about a thunderstorm, ok. But then it went to "Check Ops," and never went back. I reset the whole thing, with the help of a girl at NOAA, the 'check ops' thing stopped and it all LOOKED GOOD. However, the next day there was a TORNADO in my area and this piece of junk never picked it up. Incredibly enough, the nice tech girl at NOAA called me at HOME, remembering that I was having radio problems, just to make sure I knew there was a twister north of me! That was the end of the radio. [...] This radio is a DANGEROUS PIECE of JUNK! I guess the one I had for five years was made well, but this latest batch ( and I had two new ones, identical, neither worked ) is useless. [...]

This is a poor product. My husband and I read the manual more than once and followed it step by step in setting it up. It only went off a couple of times during severe weather--one time it went off a little over 5 minutes AFTER the tornado siren in town went off. That is unacceptable. After that, we got the "Check Op" heading and ran through the set-up according to the directions all over again. Still doesn't work. It won't go off for anything. Just a piece of junk--and I DID follow the manual!! Don't waste your money.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I would have been one of those defending it until the "clock on the unit froze. Once the correct time is input and accepted, it does not increment. This is a problem since the backlight will stay on forever, it must use the clock to know when to turn the backlight off. It's also a problem since a weather alert will occur for so many hours, with no clock, it never turns off the alert after the allotted time."

Thinking it was just a fluke, I bought a new one.
That one worked a few months and then it got the "check op" error. Now it won't sound an alarm for any hazard.

Now I have 2 doorstops. I suspect that those that recommend it will change their mind when their radio dies.

Do not waste your money on this product. I think it is a lawsuit waiting to happen to Radio Shack.

Hope this post helps to shed some light on the "OP" topic. Well guess what I took on setting and resetting this unit more then once and turning it on with the monthly and weekly signal test. I would suggest leaving them on it helps to verify the weather radio FIPS alert system is working. But at the last review I had posted it would not work! So there is a problem each unit might differ slightly, but what I wanted was it to be dependable. Not a guessing game of chance that it would respond to a weather event. So before placing this to be landfill material yes I took it apart. Warranty NONE. Not suggesting this unless you have a tv/radio or tech repair shop around, but after taking it apart found 9volt AC-DC regulator cap was noisy after using a scope and a voltmeter. Voltage was at 9.53 but noisy. Replaced large capacitor bingo smooth sailing ever since. But I also purchased a Reecom R-1630 weather radio for my testing and verification. Have been running them both in parallel since my last review here. I like the radio for its display when a warning message alert comes through still time will tell again is it dependable. Holding out for now.

I've fought this thing since we purchased it! The Check OP feature seems to be the only one that works. We have an OLD Radio Shack weather radio (Model 12-161) that resembles a 1960 transistor radio. It is clear and alerts without fail in Stand By mode. It can not differentiate between the different “levels of alert”. However, it works.[...] Just get them off the ‘street’. This is a bad reflection on an otherwise good company.

I was surprised to see all 115 reviews (Most Not Favorable) of this weather radio. So it was taken back to the store where purchased (Ephrata PA) No box, No receipt, just the credit card statement. After explaining to the manager what the problem was and saying check out your own company website. We were asked would you like a refund or store credit? We were pleased in there being No hassle, so we opted for store credit, and left to return again to purchase something NOT with bad reviews. Sorry to all those who didn't have this kind of return experience! Not all Radio Shacks are alike?

Dallas area. LOTS of tornadoes this past spring and summer. Bought it because warnings had become a few each week. Worked fine for about three months and then I noticed during a late summer storm that we never had a warning. Looked at the unit (on a kitchen windowsill) and it said Check Op. Nothing new since then. All it does is say "check op" within a few days of resetting things. We had a late evening storm w/ confirmed tornado last month (Dec) and the radio never went off - my laptop is a better warning tool. I've now read the many, many complaints reporting the same problem. Radio Shack sold us an expensive piece of junk.

Every issue consumers have had in the previous 114 comments listed below are accurate. We purchased this "thing" which gave us problems from day one, it quit working, we took it in, a RS employee took a brand new unit out of the box and handed it to my husband yesterday. We brought hit home, programmed it, went tornado watch last night (yes, tornado in December!) - NOT A PEEP FROM THE "THING". It sits on the nightstand and served as nothing more than something additional that I had to dust. My husband just called from RS and informed me that RS was talking "out of warranty time" stipulations to a lady when he walked into the store about a tv, then gave him the same sermon. DO NOT BUY THIS OVER PRICED PIECE OF JUNK!

I purchased this product in Feb 2006. It is used 100% (24/7) of the time in my home in IL.I did not read all the previous reviews for this product but some are pretty scary. I concur with other reviews that call for a recall of this product if in fact it really needs one and is just not from set-up ignorance. I don't know if the folks who make this radio have changed the design, maybe, I have no way of knowing. If this were the case then caution would be advised before making a purchase. [...]I personally have had a "GREAT" experience with this radio. I have owned at least 5 other weather radios in my life (I am 65). This one has replaced all of the others at home. It does everything I ask of it. It is a little large and cumbersome for travel.A FEW THOUGHTS:This is a hard radio to set-up for the average person in my estimation. The manual must be read and understood to properly set this radio up for optimum performance. I have mine set-up in a custom configuration....I only ask it to report the actual threats that I have in my area. I don't need Tsunami warnings in IL.SUMMARY:If your having problems with this radio please revisit the manual, gain a clear understanding of the set-up and return it ASAP if problems do develop.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

In an earlier review, I reported excessive static in a radio and in it's replacement. Finally I was able to reach a live person with NOAA - NWS who admitted a months-long problem (still not corrected!) with the transmitter.

So in reality this review is NOT about the pros and cons of the radio.

I have had this product for a while. All of a sudden it starts beeping, lost it Channels displaying "No channel available", time will not reset. Unplugged it, changed the batteries and it's still the same. For the price I would think that Radio Shack could have a better product that this one. Take it off the shelf or just give them away for free. I notice it was not working when we had 'Fay' - NO TORNADOE WARNINGS, NO THUNDER STORM WARNINGS, NO FLOOD WARNINGS. The only warning I got that it was just beeping.

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I bought my unit about 4 months ago, now 1 month out of warranty the clock on the unit has froze. Once the correct time is input and accepted, it does not increment. This is a problem since the backlight will stay on forever, it must use the clock to know when to turn the backlight off. It's also a problem since a weather alert will occur for so many hours, with no clock, it never turns off the alert after the allotted time. I've replaced the batteries, reset everything multiple times with no different. For a [$] radio this is unacceptable. Disappointed.

Radio Shack refused to post my last review, lets try this again!

I thought the radio would be a good addition to my station but soon realized it was of no use. I live less than 10 miles from the NOAA tower and even using a VHF antenna outside, the reception is spotty at best. I was very disappointed by the overall look and feel of this unit, not a very well designed radio at all. If one is looking to buy one of these, don't depend on it!

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This is the first Weather Alert Radio that I have owned and after reading up on the other weather alert radios on the market I find that it has a lot of features. However, if the main idea behind a weather alert radio is to alert me when something is happening in MY county, this radio doesn't do it. I have programed and re-programmed this thing a dozen times. And I still only get alerts for the 2nd county that I enter not the first when I have it set for multiple counties. The county code that it has automatically programmed into the machine is correct per NOAA. So I have been living with that problem all along. (I live on the border of 2 counties.) Now in the last 2 weeks I have been receiving a No Signal alarm. It is just as loud as the others just not as long, different. Very annoying. I am not longer getting a strong signal from any of the 7 channels. I have changed the batteries, checked the plug. Re-set the channel a dozen of times, and I keep getting that alarm. I just unplugged it and removed the batteries the other day. I now have a worthless piece of equipment. So now I am looking for a new weather alert radio and it wont be this one. Looking at the Midland WR-300 and the Reecom 1650.

Features I liked:

County codes are pre-programed into system.
System auto selects best channel.
Can turn off alerts for alerts not needed.

Bad things:

Impossible to program, at least with my unit you can never get into and out of programming modes. There are 4/5 keys you are using to program most of the time and you never know which one to hit after you think you have made a selection to get to the menu or out of the programming function. Good luck.

Bad channel reception, even prior to no signal issue.

Unable to receive correct alerts.

How can you, as a company, read the numerous comments on your own website, regarding your Hazard Alert Radio 12-262, and not realize that you are running a scam on people?I also have one that worked well for a few months, then simply stopped working. No alerts, no weekly tests. Just "check op". No amount of resetting solves the problem. Is there a chance that you program this fault into the radio, so that people will then purchase another one? Surely most people are smart enough to stay away from the Radio Shack brand after being burned like this!So here we go into another hurricane season, [$]invested in this, unreturnable, unworkable, useless "life saver". Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This radio failed time and time again to pick up alerts. I had it set to pick up all alerts from all areas. I thought the problems many were having was due to incorrect codes being used. That is clearly not the case. Side by side to an older RS weather radio, this unit responded only a handful of times. The older unit responded to each alert. Most of the other negative reviews are 100% correct. I played with it for a few weeks, and have returned for a refund. Save yourself a trip and avoid this poorly made in China radio.

Like most people, I bought this product to protect my family. I thought by buying a NOAA authorized product, it would work well. I should have read the reviews.

It does work, as long as you are outside your home. I have done everything but put an external antenna on it, which I will do since I have already sunk soo much many $$ into to this one.

Anyone looking for a weather radio should first find out if the external walls or the roof of their home has aluminum foil. If this is the case, then you will need an external antenna. I strongly feel this is my issue.

We just had some bad weather and the unit didn't alert us. I have a cell phone that I have programmed to get weather alerts, thank God, as that is how I found out about the alerts not the by the [$] unit I bought. I tried to reset the radio as the storm was happening and new alerts were going off no luck. Also the unit had done it's weekly test last Wednesday. In this case paying more for it doesn't mean it's better. I'm very disappointed and concerned since this is used to save lives!

Purchased radio specifically to receive S.A.M.E. alerts. Worked fine for a few months and then the "check op" notice kept appearing and no alerts and no weekly tests were received. Spent money on external antenna per the instruction book and that didn't help. Radio is useless unless you just want to hear the local forecast which it picks up just fine. Can't depend on it for bad weather alerts. Of course I kept trying to get it to work by reprogramming several times and waiting for the weekly test to see if it was working (and installing the antenna) while the warranty ran out.

Purchased radio 6/07. Worked well for about 3 months, then started losing signal. Reset several times, and still keep getting Check OP!! I bought this radio to notify my family when bad weather is approaching and this has happened only once in the 8 months we've had it!! I will be replacing it SOON!

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

The radio picks up warnings just fine, and has a good alarm. The initial set up for setting your county is great. However, beyond that, it might as well be greek. The menu structure and controls are not intuitive, and the manual is no help. It took me 15 minutes to set the clock and alarm, that's with the book in hand. I've programmed all kinds of things in my life- VCRs, TVs, even computers, but this thing takes the cake. I bought it to double as a bedside alarm clock, but you can't read it at night even with the backlight on. Would work much better as such if it had a regular LED clock face with standard controls. Bottom line, you can get a decent SAME radio for a lot less.

My husband and I bought this a month ago and have just realized that it has not been working right from the very beginning. Thank God he did because this useless machine would not have come close to saving my families life. I will be returning it and going somewhere else to purchase another one. After reading the other reviews, this seems to be a common problem. Guess buying the most expensive one didn't prove that we were buying the best one, Do NOT buiy this!!!

Bought mine this past July (2007) and had no problems setting it up. Worked great until about November (2007). I got the message to "check ops" and could find no problems. Reset the radio according to directions and it did fine for about a week. Then again it came up with "check ops". Again I reset it. It recieves the weekly tests if I reset it just before the broadcast, then stops receiving again. Still get the voice broadcasts but no alerts or tests of any kind. This past february 5th I reset it and it worked great for the duration of our bad weather. But now it tells me to check ops again. Still get voice just no alerts.

NOTE: Give some weight to the negative reviews, I don't think they are something you want to ignore!

Yes, I am going to try one more, if I can't find something better. If the second one fails also, I will post again.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I had very high hopes for this weather radio. Unfortunately, this past week it was displaying the CHECK OP message after having worked without flaw since I got it in April 2007. I reset it according to the manual and re-programmed it (including turning on the weekly and monthly tests) and this week it missed two events: the weekly test and a winter storm warning. I also noticed that the NOAA that used to display in the lower left of the LCD is only on now while the weather bar is pressed and the weather is playing. Perhaps this is a "clue" as to when it will begin to not alert. It's too bad, as I liked this model for a lot of reasons. However, alerting my family to hazardous conditions is what we spent[$] for and it is worthless if it doesn't do that. Looks like I will have to spend money again for a different brand. I would not recommend this radio as this failure is all too common according to the other posts here and could put you and your loved ones potentially into mortal danger.

Bottom Line:

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Purchased radio based on sensitivity since I live in a rural area and easy to notice Warning, Watch,& Advisory LEDs.However, this unit does not appear to respond to S.A.M.E. messages reliably (even though voice quality appears great). The radio receives the Required Weekly Test (RWT) fine, but has problems decoding S.A.M.E. messages for specific counties. I've reset the radio many times to make sure FIPS is correct. Also coordinating with NWS office in San Angelo, TX to highlight potential recall for this product. [...].Reception / signal strength does NOT appear to be a problem since I can receive several NWS stations (without static).Currently, I have no confidence in this receiver to alert me properly for any severe weather WARNING. I have disabled S.A.M.E. to be on the safe side. It's a shame, since this radio could be a great unit with good design features (e.g. tilting LCD panel, LEDs)

I have several portable Weather alert radios but thought it would be nice to have something next to the bed that would always be there, always ready to alert. Just plug it in, program it and forget about it until it alerts. Sounds simple enough but this set doesn't work so you get a false sense of security.
I'm on my second one. First one worked for a month or so then stopped alerting. I could recieve the broadcast but the alerts just would not work. I took it back after several attempts to reprogram, reset and relocate. Got a replacement figuring there was a defect in that particular unit and not in the model. After all, how can you sell such a pricy weather alert radio and it not be reliable? I can be so naive sometimes!
Well it's not reliable. The second unit worked at first, as well, and then after a signal loss message the other day I discovered I was not receiving any usual advisories!

Where did I put that box?

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I read the reviews for this product with a chuckle. How can so many people who describe themselves using such labels as Gearhead and Techno Geek and others have so much trouble programming a device that only has five buttons for setup? I've had this radio for over a year and it has worked flawlessly during that time. I live in Arkansas in tornado alley and during certain times of the year, this radio really gets a workout. Other times, especially in mid-summer, it stays completely silent. And yes, mine reads "Check Op" most of the time but that is because I don't have the test alerts turned on. It works when I need it to and more importantly, it works exactly the way I have it setup and want it to work. Don’t take the radio back just because it has “Check Op” on it unless you know for a fact that it isn’t working. And if you are concerned about that, be sure to check your setup and make sure you have the radio configured to receive test alerts. If you check the manual in the troubleshooting section for “Check Op”, you’ll see that this message only means that the radio hasn’t received an alert in 10 days or whatever the period is. It doesn’t mean the radio isn’t working. It’s telling to you check the radio operations and make sure that it is still functioning.

I'm surprised that so many people seem to have problems programming the device. I found it to be straight forward and simple. I didn't even read the manual for it. I do admit that I have an affinity for electronics and consequently have never had any problems working with any of them. But this one is very simplistic to use and setup.

My radio woke me up this morning at 1:20 am for a tornado watch. I like the text message it displays and the countdown to the end of watches and warnings are very handy. If you come in the house after an alert has sounded, you can see at a glance that something is up because the LED indicators stay lit during watches and warnings and it's a simple matter of pressing the Weather button to get up to date.

The sound quality of the radio is excellent and it is reliable. The batteries seem to last forever and there is an indicator to let you know when they are running low on power.

Don't let the negative reviews steer you away from this radio. I suspect that most are a result of ignorance (i.e. the reviewer didn't get the radio setup correctly and doesn't understand how to configure it.) There may have been some actual lemons produced though; that's always a possibility. On the other hand, mine worked as advertised, right out of the box. It was preprogrammed to pick up everything within a 50 mile radius and it was programmed to alert for most types of weather. Consequently, at first, it was pretty chatty. I personally don't want to be waked in the middle of the night only to be warned of a lightning storm, especially if it just affects people two counties away from me. So, I eventually did reprogram mine to only alert for a narrow area and to only alert for a specific set of weather events. Personally, I really only want to be waked up for tornado events; storms in general don't really concern me. But that is the great thing about this radio; you can set it up however you want to use it. It's a great product.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This radio is tricky to set up. The button sequence to get into and around in the setup menus is not obvious. Volume control needs a lot of work. As loud as it is, this makes a better emergency alarm than radio.

Alarm clock features are good. The clock alarm is distinct from the weather alarm so there is less chance of confusion. The switch to activate the alarm can be set to disable the snooze function, though, which makes the snooze button shut the alarm off entirely and could cause you to oversleep if you aren't careful.

Instructions really need improvement, especially with the potential consequences of getting the radio programmed wrong. They are very abbreviated and many features and functions are not well described (for example, this radio will mute at the end of an alert, but only in the tone-alert mode, which actually gives both tone and voice alerts; this is the sort of confusion that the manual doesn't clear up well).

Overall, however, if you can get past the weak instructions, this is a good and dependable radio and does its job well.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I am 64 yrs old and have owned several "weather radio's" Most have worked out fine for reporting weather alerts over a large radius of your state. This radio allows you to program the country, state, and county that you live in. From there you can continue to program "your choice" of counties, that you want to hear alerts about up to nine. Three or Four will do it for me. This allows you to sleep better at night knowing that when an alert sounds you had better pay attention because this alert is for......"YOU!", not some county 100 (+) miles away. I would not get to preoccupied with the size, buttons, tone, sound, etc. This is a weather radio, not a high performance stereo system. I have listened to high performance weather radios and they all sound "tinny.” Blame the weather (NOAA) for that with their electronic voice reporting systems. This radio is the real deal. Read the manual, read the manual, learn how to save yours and the lives of your family and friends. That's it!! TET

I have an older RS SAME WX radio and when an alert is broadcast by NWS, they send a "MUTE" data burst at the end which shuts off the audio on that radio. Why, for crying out loud, did RS choose to leave off this worthwhile and convenient feature with this radio. What are THEY thinking in RS R and D????
If it is to save costs, I'd gladly pay another $20 or more to have the "MUTE" decoder back!

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Have owned this radio for over 1yr now and have these comments. Good: The SAME program works well and only sets off the alarm when the programmed counties get a watch/warning. Really like the text messages too. Alert tone has programmable volume so you can set it to a reasonable level and don't hit the celing when it goes off. Radio reception is also excelent. BAD: Listening volume level at minimum setting is still very LOUD, and thus I rarely use the radio to just listen to the forcast. I went back to local radio shack and tried another model in the show room. It too had the same problem, thus I know it's not just my radio. This is great if you're hard of hearing, but otherwise very anoying. Also the menu system is a bit confusing, and I have to reference the manual a lot. It's good at finding the strongest station automatically, but I don't find it easy to change stations manually.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Was going to buy Midland radio, but you cannot program it like you can this model. Everything works great. I programmed it to only sound the alarm for severe thunderstorm and for tornado warning. The volume is adjustable for the alarm down to a level where you will still hear it. This is an excellent unit. Was confusing at first with the manual, but i figured it out. This is a great radio I've had it for some time and it still works fine, no problems at all.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

GREAT Radio hands down i have owned this radio for about a year now and It Hasn't missed and alert since i took it out of the box. I am a trained SKYWARN weather spotter and i use for that reason. When theres a warning i can let my neighbors in my Appartment building know as im heading out the door to go spotting as im the only one that has one :D. I Give this NOAA Weather radio A 100 and i'll never go back useing others. Great Product Radio Shack. KEEP them I Stock lol and maybe lower the price a bit.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I get a super-strong signal from the local NWS station, but after proper programming of location information, it will not say anything other than CHECK OP. Am about to start looking for another brand.

By Herb M from California on 5/23/2007

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

Worked right out of the box and programed with ease. However, the instruction manual could be clearer. Also, I am a bit surprised that the volume control will not go all the way down. Its minimum volume is still fairly loud. Overall, I like the radio and its alert system worked the first Wed that the test signal was broadcast. Could some comments about it not working be due to the inst. manual and not the radio itself???

By Gina M from Edmond,OK on 5/8/2007

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I am VERY happy with this radio. I like the fact that I can program it to only go off for a tornado warning. I am no longer awakened through the night for thunderstorm warnings. It has worked well and has gone off once when we had a tornado warning. I highly recomend.

I live in the country and storms moved through yesterday and this unit responded to each and every watch and warning as it was issued for the counties I programmed. Wish I'd had this 7 years ago when I first moved here. Excellent product.

By James M from Wood on 3/1/2007
Pros:
Easy to use

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

I purchased one of these radios and programmed the unit for the specific counties and watches\warnings that I wanted to be alerted for. The unit would never sound an alert or give any type of alarm message until I changed the location back to "ALL". I was very displeased with the results. I will be seeking a refund.

Pros:
Easy to use, Good coverage, Good Quality, Good Value

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This radio never missed an alert(Tornado Warnings/Watches, Severe T-storm alerts, Flash Floods.) The transmitter in Crystal Lake does not send digital bursts for winter storms and advisories which trigger the radio, so that explains the problem that almost everyone has.

Pros:
Easy to use, Good coverage, Good Quality, Good Value

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

After reading all the other reviews on the other brand, I felt this was a good buy. Wondering what it would take to set it off-short of a hurricane came quickly. We were in North Florida and had an advisory come through. We felt it paid for itself on that one occasion. Easy to set up, can be relocated to other areas (slight re-set up) and it is awesome. We trust it.

By FEMA E from Leesburg on 7/12/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good coverage, Good Quality, Good Value

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This is the best weather radio that radio shack offers. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that other radios have, but it has the necessities and features that you would need out of an alert radio. I think it could be offered for a bit less money, but I still recommend it.

Comments about RadioShack Desktop Weather Radio with Alarm Clock and SAME Operation:

This weather radio is truly a life saver. I had the Midland weather radio, and it failed me quite a few times. I returned it and picked up this one and I can't say enough about it's reliability, and mainly its ease of use. I absolutly recommend this weather radio even for the price.
