Controllers

A new controller is one of the easiest ways to punch up your gaming experience. While most consoles come packaged with a controller included, you may be interested in picking up another one if you want to take advantage of cool extra features or multiplayer capabilities. After all, you can't show up your friends if you don't have the extra controllers to get them in on the action. Keep these factors in mind when purchasing a new controller:

Controllers

Wireless controllers

Most likely, the controller that came with your system is wired. While these controllers get the job done, and are generally cheaper than their wireless counterparts, a wireless controller can free you from the confines of being attached to the console.

The frequency range of wireless controllers can vary greatly, but they typically allow you to control your game from virtually anywhere in the room. No longer relegated to sitting on the floor, a wireless controller gives you the freedom to snipe the enemy from the comfort of your favorite couch or chair. And because these controllers are cordless, you won't have to worry about tripping over cords or unraveling controllers that have twisted or knotted together.

Keep in mind that wireless controllers are powered by batteries, so if you're in the market for one, be sure to snatch up some rechargeable batteries as well.

Features

Not all controllers come with the same features. Some features you might want to look for include:
• Vibration motors: immerse yourself further in the game with rumbling functionality
• Programmable buttons: cut down on common button sequences by preprogramming them for one-button execution
• Light up effects: add style to your controller with cool glowing lights

Specialty controllers

There are a variety of specialty controllers available that are designed to enhance the realism of gameplay. For example, if you want to literally get behind the wheel of that sports car in your racing game, you can pick up a racing wheel controller that will simulate the driving experience. Alternatively, there are various dance pad controllers that are made specifically for dance games. With such a controller, your feet take control of the action, so you can get out of your seat and dance to the beat.

Memory cards

The days when turning off the game meant you had to start over the next day have come and gone. If you're looking to save your game data (and no doubt you are), a memory card is a good way to go. Memory cards are used by many consoles as the sole means by which to save game progress (PS2, GameCube, etc.), as well as other information like hidden characters, high scores, special weapons, hidden levels and custom controller settings. The more games you play, the more memory you will need. Typically, memory cards are produced in varying levels of storage capacity. Consider purchasing a higher storage capacity if you plan on playing a large variety of games. Newer consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are phasing out the necessity of memory cards as they come pre-installed with dedicated hard drives. But you may still want to pick up a memory card if you'd like a convenient way to transport your gaming info from one console to another (for example, from your console to your friend's console).

Cables and adapters

Cables and adapters add convenience and increased performance to your gaming. For example, A/V cables are most often used to upgrade the picture and sound quality of games. This might be especially beneficial for you if you have a high-end television that is capable of impressive picture and audio performance. There are numerous cable and adapter types that are available for your game system.

Some common cable types include:
? Video cables: used to increase the picture quality of your game
? Audio cables: used to increase the audio quality of your game
? Extension cables: add extra length to peripherals such as your controller so you can sit further away from the television

Some common adapter types include:
• RF adapter: connects your system to a TV without A/V connections
• Game switch: allows you to easily switch between your TV and game console
• Multitap: allows you to hook up more controllers for increased multiplayer action

Cases and protection

If you're going to be traveling with your game system, it would probably be a good idea to provide some travel insurance in the form of a travel case. Portable systems such as the PSP and Nintendo DS are prime candidates for a travel case, as they are always on the go. However, a travel case may also be necessary if you plan on traveling with your at-home game console. Most game systems are bulky, delicate and ill-prepared for the hazards of road travel. Therefore, investing in a protective travel case is recommended for any game system that will occasionally venture out from the cushy confines of your living room.

Power

You can't play your games without some sort of power. Most portable systems these days come with a rechargeable battery, but if you're worried about running out of power in the heat of the battle, you may want to consider purchasing some power accessories. Pick up an external, disposable battery for gaming emergencies – they can extend your gameplay by several hours. Or, for a more long-term solution, consider picking up an extra rechargeable battery for your system. That way, if one loses its charge, you'll have another as a backup.

Online gaming

Online gaming is revolutionizing the way people play games. As more and more games become available for online play, more and more gamers will flock to the Internet in pursuit of global competition. Go head-to-head with opponents from across the city, country or globe, and do it better with these accessories:

Subscription cards

Most game consoles require a subscription service to access online gameplay. These subscriptions are available in the form of subscription cards, which can be purchased in various increments of time (typically one month to one year). Some cards even come loaded with additional features such as points that can be exchanged online for in-game weapons, new levels or downloads.

Headsets

Headsets are an important accessory for online gaming because they allow you to communicate with fellow gamers. Outfitted with earphones and a microphone, you'll be able to strategize with teammates, trash-talk opponents or simply chat with friends while playing your favorite games.
